There is no contradiction between being a religious Jew and knowing how to defend yourself. I think every Yeshiva bochur should be taught some form of martial arts.

If you understood Israel a bit better you would have known that Bnei Akiva are Orthodox Zionists who do army service and are represented out of all proportion in the officer class.
