He WAS non religious. He just wanted the state to recognize it! The current situation in Israel is unacceptable. What business is it of the state what a person believes or doesn't believe? Why is there even a state registry of religion? Why can't religion be a personal matter? And how can religion be a matter of the incident of birth? Isn't religion supposed to be a system of beliefs? That is, what a person actually "believes"? I hope more and more people get the Ministry of Interior to register them as non religious. It is hard for a person of conscience to identify with establishment Orthodox Judaism and the pain it causes. The Late Yoram Karniuk had the courage of his convictions to change his ID registration to that of an "unbeliever". Perhaps if we had the courage of our convictions as he did, we should do the same. Karniuk was a great humanist.

Eichler's error is thinking that having a Jewish identity means that you have to believe in God. Some 85% of Israelis are classified as some secular to some degree. By definition, they don't believe in the God of Eichler. And a significant number of that 85% are glatt atheist like myself, but we still consider ourselves 100% Jewish.

Were it up to Eichler, the Jewish people would continue to await messianic deliverance in the hellholes (no shortage of those) of the Diaspora.
