3. Obama loves muslims so tell the muslims to sort out syria
zionist forever   (06.14.13)
As its their backyard time for Obama to get his muslim buddies to do the job for once if he wants outside intervention. By setting up a no fly zone he puts American pilots at risk from ant aircraft missiles and it will cost millions every day. Saudi Arabia has the most modern and will soon biggest airforce in the Middle East ( Israel included ), Egypt, Jordan and Turkey all have modern airforces so between them they are more than capable of enforcing a no fly zone. The muslims know its in their interest to end the violence to avoid it spreading into their countries so time for Obama to say on the record there will be no US intervention and get his European friends to do the same. Let the muslims do their own dirty work for once. Eventually bringing order to Syria and making the country self governable the only long term solution has to be a very expensive military operation which will last years. Obama must also tell the muslims America will not send a single soldier or provide a single contribute a single dollar to rebuild.
4. It's about time America acted!
Mark Jeffery Koch ,   Cherry Hill, NJ USA   (06.14.13)
There are two misconceptions most Americans have about this conflict. The first is the what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas attitude that we should mind our own business and not get involved. However, our ally Jordan is on the verge of collapse because this tiny country is absorbing hundreds of thousands of refugees. Lebanon is close to a new civil war between Sunnis and Shiites that could also cause the same thing to happen in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain and Turkey, our NATO ally may get involved, and there could be a war between Israel and Syria with Iran using Hezbollah as a proxy on the Golan Heights. The second misconception is the false belief that if President Obama arms the rebels or craters the airfields so Syrian jets cannot bomb their own cities this would somehow lead to tens of thousands of American soldiers on the ground in the middle of a nasty war. We can greatly weaken the brutal Syrian regime without one American soldier setting footing on Syrian soil. We had no security interest in Kosovo but yet America could not stand by and watch the genocide of Muslims in Kosovo by the Serbs and we ended the genocide and if we had acted we could have prevented the slaughter of 800,000 people in Rwanda. America is the only superpower in the world and a superpower is not measured by the strength of its military or the size of its economy but instead by the values which it stands for. Close to 100,000 people have died in Syria. America must act now.

The days of America going to war because of good values is gone. Our values these days is big corporations and big government. Haliburton and others like them win and you lose. We are not the worlds mother nor should we be. When the Muslims have problems there are plenty of Muslim countries to do something. The fact that they like to kill each other and cause trouble where ever they gather in large numbers shouldn't be our problem. After all, we are the Great Satan and they don't appreciate it when we do try to help. Our Government is spending us to death and this country is being turned into a financial house of cards. We can not continue like this and survive. The one crisis you mentioned I wish we could have prevented somehow is Rwanda but that is the problem with African governments and people. They tend to be loyal to tribes and not the country and people as a whole.

yosef, phd ,   usa israel   (06.14.13)
obama is the one of the worst presidents and by far the least qualified "Commander in Chief" He is a do nothing pres. and a dangerous megalomaniac, having appointed even worse mediocrities to key positions in his cabinet. .However, he is a good demagogue, muslim lover and a Judophob. What a combo !
8. Syria
Get Real ,   UK   (06.14.13)
Arab protest against US inaction. Usually the opposite. Let the UN or the Arab League sort it out. Where is their action, outrage and condemnation of the slaughter? Not a fraction of the protest that they usually make when Israel defends itself against terror attack. Not US or the West's problem.
9. #6 Couldn't disagree more
Mark Jeffery Koch ,   Cherry Hill, NJ USA   (06.14.13)
By your logic, let the Middle East explode because it's none of our business and it was the African countries responsibility to end the genocide in Rwanda not ours? I guess we should have expected the European countries to end the murder of six million Jews because that too was far from our shores. We could have bombed the train tracks that were taking Jews to their deaths but Roosevelt, who knew a lot about what was going on, decided to do nothing. Whether we like it or not there is only one country that has the power to end the slaughter of innocents and prevent an entire region from going up in flames. It's not Russia, because they love to add kerosene to worldwide conflicts. It's not China , who is more concerned with making money, and it's not England or France because even if they want to help they don't have the military or finances anymore. When the genocide was occurring in Darfur only one country truly had the strength to end it. What we lack unfortunately, with this President is the will, and it's time we stop using Vietnam and Iraq as an excuse to be uninvolved. Just because America made mistakes in getting involved before does not mean we should remain silent now. We should learn from our mistakes but unless we take a stand the entire Middle East is going up in flames and that cannot, despite all the gleeful comments about Muslims killing Muslims, be good for Israel because Israel will not be able to stay out of the conflict if it continues to grow beyond Syria's borders.
10. Give us a break. Obama is embroiled in several scandals
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (06.14.13)
in the United States. Without even asking if the United States wants ANOTHER WAR....he just jumps into one hoping every citizen in the United States forgets he has crossed the same lines as Richard Nixon did. His whole bunch of golf course groupies, has crossed every line imaginable in deceit...and outright lying about every scandal he gets caught dipping his finger into. So lets all change the subject and start another war. Kill several hundred thousand more Syrians, after encouraging Al Qaeda and a bunch of religious lunatics to overthrow Assad's Regime. Assad isn't apple pie and sunshine...but when another religious bunch of fanatics takes over...Syria will be just like Egypt.
11. More lies about Chemical weapons..
Chris.B ,   Australia   (06.14.13)
to satisfy the neocons drive for WW3. I would like to see America set up a no fly zone against Syria while Russian military is active in the country.Assad has won and the Syrian people dont wont Iraqi or Libyan style western democracy.

Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (06.14.13)
I didn't say who was responsible for Rwanda I mentioned reasons for it to happen. Your reading things into my post such as your reference to the murder of six million Jews. We should speak out about the problems in the world today and help our friends but in general the Muslim countries have not been our friends unless they want something.

(06.14.13)
The UN is dysfunctional: there is nothing "united" about this heap of lazy and violent racists. The UN supports or protects terrorist states like Syria, Egypt, Yemen, you got the point... The UN can't survive without the US TAXPAYER $ ! The US and the civilized countries, should leave the UN circus, kick its HQ out of all US territory and re-organize the Civilized world.

zionist forever   (06.14.13)
Its not genocide its a civl war and apart from a couple of isolated cases the use of chemical weapons by BOTH sides it has been an old fashioned civil war. The priority should be to find out where the chemical weapons used came from because in such small quantities its unlikely to have been under Assads orders, the man isn't stupid and in such small quantities there are no military gains that will come from it so who did supply them? Fact is the whole region is sitting on a powder keg and we can't stop civil wars or intervening in them all. Have you considered whats going to happen if Assad does fall? Most likely we will see a repeat of Iraq with the power vacuum left by the loss of the strong man and sectarian violence takes over so old scores can be settled and a fight to fill Assads shoes. It is very unlikely that Assad will go and we will begin a stable transition to democracy & stability. The western puppet government in exile is only recognised by the FSA and as its a western puppet it probably won't last long anyway. Like in Iraq the police and military need to be pulled dissolved and rebuilt from scratch and that takes years and a foreign peacekeeping force to keep order before the country is even capable of self rule and neither the US or Europe have the stomach for that. What Obama needs to be doing is getting the Arab League to deal with Syria everything from no fly zones to post war peacekeeping must be dealt with by the arabs alone. The political solution everybody should push for it to divide Syria into two or more countries because the different groups need self rule so tensions can calm. For now though the best thing to do is let this war play itself out and provide aid to the refugees get UN to start to rehouse them in other countries so we don't get another palestinian situation.
16. Thank g-d America has a true strong president
Michelle ,   New Jersey   (06.14.13)
in President Obama. I still remember his historic inauguration in 08". Because i was there. All the damage to the world and the US that was done because of Dick Cheney and bush seemed to have disappeared over night when obama was sworn in. And he has delivered on his hope and change. our economy has been roaring back, the best since FDR. And Our Boss (Obama) has led us through the worst economic collapse since the great depression. Last night on MSNBC they were telling us how under Obama america has flourished into one of the greatest nations ever. I dont really follow politics, until obama was elected, but one thing i know is not to listen to FAUX NEWS (Thats what i cleverly call FOX NEWS since its a propaganda machine). But my point is that Obama has gotten us thru this far with whats probably the greatest foreign policy president in generations, i think since lincoln, i forget, but the proof of that is on the white houses web page. if you dont believe go check the proof yourself. So im not too crazy on intervening in syria. But if obama thinks we have to, then im not gonna argue with him. But i wonder how long he will be friends with israel. any country that ethnically cleanses their own citizens and jails journalists, and doesnt allow anyone but their own people in government and to move around freely, im against. thats one of the reasons i support iran, because israel with nuclear weapons is a threat to the region. iran has never waged war on anyone in history, and i believe that they will make sure israel doesnt cause anarchy anymore in the middle east.
17. no UNSCR is needed
Cipora Julianna Kohn   (06.14.13)
the day that the terror regime in iran sent its thugs to syria to murder civilians, the day its terror proxy hezbollah started fighting on the side of assad's genocidal regime, the day iraq sent shia troops to fight in syria, the so-called civil war stopped being a civil war and became internationalized. add to that that russia did not run to the unsc to ask for permission to station the bulk of its navy in tartus and the eastern mediterranean and kept selling advanced weapons to assad and sent advisors, and it is certain that the un has lost all role in the enlarged syrian conflict. the us and its allies cannot allow the assad regime to survive given its decades of terror and its alliance with the genocidal terror regime of iran. assad had many opportunities to disassociate himself from psychopathic regime of tehran but he did not do so. obama has very little time left to continue his habitual vacillations before the entire region blows up. he should have helped the rebels at least a year ago before all the foreigners started flooding Syria.

19. #10 has it right! This is a wag the dog
Ben ,   Chutzlaaretz   (06.14.13)
Right or wrong, Obama's statements have more to do with the IRS and NSA scandals than any desire to help the Syrian people or prevent the fall of Jordan/Lebanon or embroilment of Turkey. Those would have been good reasons 2 years ago. The timing of his "a red line was crossed" couldn't be any more obvious, but apparently the sheeple are buying it.. #16 You are either insane or a genius at satire.

You hit it right on the nails head.
21. Cipora 17- Earlier I suggested that
Stephen in New York   (06.14.13)
events would drive the feckless Obama to defend the interests of the US despite his reluctance to do so. I was right about that and you are right that he is also paralyzed with incompetence and indecisiveness. Without imposing a serious no-fly zone, Obama's new policy will fail. There's more that hasn't been revealed, but maybe not much more. We'll see what happens.

Shoshana Rubin   (06.14.13)
I say let the Muslims kill each other, quietly or noisely.
23. Obama has got to be a Sunni
Steve   (06.14.13)
We've been watching Obama support Sunni jihadists all over the region, in the Middle East (Egypt) and North Africa (Libya). Now Obama is supporting Sunni jihadists (al-Qaeda, Muslim Brotherhood, etc.) in their effort to topple Syria's Alawite regime.
24. 21 Stephen NY
CJK   (06.14.13)
yes, events have forced his hands. the question is, which events. there are so many events conversing at the same time, both internationally and domestically. the syrian/shia/russia alliance facing the west is obama's moment to man up. yet, from press reports, yesterday he was at a meeting with gays/lesbians/transgender people. it was left to the young speechwriter ben rhodes to give out the news, news that are as opaque as the originator of the news. shabbat shalom, cipora
25. Why would Russia want to join in
Stephen in New York   (06.14.13)
what promises to be an extremely violent confrontation? Beats me. This is where Israel lives. Short of nuking Tel Aviv, I don't see what power Russia expects to project. But I'm just another stupid American.
26. # 16
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (06.14.13)
If you were clever you wouldn't believe what you are saying about the worst president in U.S. history and you would understand that all mainstream media is propaganda. I hate to break it to you but even the White House web page is propaganda!
27.  CJK 24- It’s clear that Obama is reluctant.
Stephen in New York   (06.14.13)
It’s clear that Obama is reluctant. That’s why I always describe it as ‘events driving Obama.’ That deals with his reluctance and the reality that there’s too much going on for him to remain passive. Shabbat Shalom. Hope you can relax. I can’t.

I have to say it is absolutely NO SURPRISE to see you endorse the joke of a post #16. It truly is amusing to watch how our enemies consistently get everything wrong, as though they have been deliberately blinded by a higher power.
