i posted #9 and I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. the jewish mind and character was greatly influenced by those elders and judaic scholars that insisted the jews study the gemara, talmud, etc.. this, they thought will sharpen their brains. and so, throughout the decades and centuries, jewish religious scholars viewed the study of religion and its judaic books as the most important form of education and insisted on and valued education as the supreme value in jewish life. this is the reason why present day japanese and chinese educational figures are bringing the talmud for study in japan and or china, i can;t recall which.

Those "great names" studied , but not gemara or other such subjects . Only TWO of the Jewish Nobel prizes were , as far as known to me , religious . Agnon in literature and Aumann in economics . i am the same poster... you are so right. but the prevalence of jewish holy books' study opportunities in asia are happening for a simple reason. there was never antisemitism in countries like south korea, japan and china. till today, they value and respect the jews for their brains.
