1. interesting argument
CJK   (06.19.13)
other countries are able to throw a few bombs, without any problems. the us military high command is either losing its machismo, or else the commander-in-chief has put steel handcuffs on it.
2. I don't recall Congress declaring war even though
Grace ,   USA   (06.19.13)
Obama wants to supply arms to terrorist. Please know the citizens of the USA want to stay OUT of Syria. Nor do we approve of supplying arms and munitions to anyone, small or large regardless of what our out of control government says. We pray for peace. And we love you Israel! May HaShem come quickly b'Yeshuah
3. And yet when Kerry was Senator
Jake   (06.19.13)
He was a frequent guest at the "Oval Office" in Damascus. That old photo of Rumsfeld shaking the hand of Saddam comes to mind.
4. Andrei Arbashe and John Kerry
(06.19.13)
Andrei Arbashe, a Syrian civilian who happens to be Christian, was beheaded and his body fed to dogs by the same people that Kerry wants to have running Syria instead of Assad.
5. #1 or the US military leaders are not idiots
spyguy ,   Seattle   (06.19.13)
Every question Dempsy asked is legitimate and the reality is no one in the world knows how to get the US out after starting a major war. Look at how long it has taken the US to extract itself form Iraq and Afghanistan.
6. ABSURD: to supply the more moderate elements
marian ,   Romania   (06.19.13)
If they are 'moderate`, even 'more moderate', why do they need arms for ??
7. It's sickening that even State's Kerry and Clinton
David Turner ,   Richmond, USA   (06.19.13)
have more balls than the US military!
8. Umm... we can't just fire up a few ovens...
Miron ,   USA   (06.19.13)
we need to know how to enter the ovens... and exit the ovens... and than, do you have any idea how difficult it is to handle integrated ovens? The price of gas before the final solution is done? Well... in some ways Mr. Kerry is right. Some countries went ahead with a few ovens without a good plan...
9. America, the fearful superpower, the cowardly giant
David Turner ,   Richmond, USA   (06.19.13)
From Gates/Mullen to Hagel/Dempsey the US military has begged off serving any purpose except how not to defend US interests. Swan song of the declining superpower that just wants to leave the world stage. To what? To a nuclear Iran using Syria to deflect attention, a "reformist" new president to provide Obama yet another way out of action? Even America's retiring European allies look aggressive next to the US, leading a reluctant US "leader" into some, any, action in Syria. Stratfor's Friedman recently called the US confused and without the capacity to think strategically. Neither was he just speaking about Obama but takes the analysis through Bush, Jr to Reagan and Carter. A bi-partisan history of meddling and muddling. This time around the US is surrendering to Russia, the incoming hegemon. And along with the Middle East Russia will by default also inherit Europe, soon to be surrounded by a Russian fleet in the Mediterranean, and an armored corps to the north. Go America! Maybe Isolationism, the US protected by oceans west and east makes more sense in the age of missiles than it did in the age of navies.
10. #5: Israel didn't need excuses to NOT act!
David Turner ,   Richmond, USA   (06.19.13)
The US has failed its word, interest and mission to the ME and the US since Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld chose to destabilize the region by going to war without an "entry/exit strategy," apparently no strategy at all for Iraq/Afghanistan. And now the mighty US military, having lost both wars, is afraid to justify its existence, and the hundreds of billions of dollars of budget on anything beyond parades. Its a disgrace to hear America's military warn of "unanticipated consequences" its excuse for fearing confronting even an "Iran/Syria"! "Dempsey said that without much of an entrance strategy, without anything resembling an exit strategy, and without even a clear-eyed understanding of the consequences of an American airstrike, the Pentagon would be extremely reluctant to get behind Kerry’s plan."

We are still in Iraq and Afghanistan because it is making money for the likes of Haliburton and politicians making a profit from it.
