In England we have the established Church of England, called in America Episcopalian. Nonetheless Methodists, Romans, Jews, Hindus and Muslims all enjoy full equal rights. Calling Israel a Jewish state does not mean other faiths are proscribed. It means the day of rest is Shabbos, that Jewish festivals are bank holidays, that Hebrew is the main language, with Arabic and English in second place...

Have you seen the gravestones of your great grandparents or grandparents? Do they have anything Jewish or Hebrew on them? Do your Russian documents specify Jewish for nationality? This, however, need not prove anything as Russia may define nationality by father, while it's your mother who makes you Jewish.

WHAT ABOUT THE MUSLIMS IN FRANCE OR FOR THAT MATTER IN THE USA AND ALL OVER SCANDINAVIA AND EUROPE WHICH CALL THEMSELVES FRENCH REPUBLIC, KINGDOM OF ENGLAND, REPUBLIC OF THE NETHERLANDS ALL BASED ON JUDEO CHRISTIAN DOGMA AND RELIGION. MUSLIMS ARE A MINORITY IN EACH OF THESE NATIONAL REPUBLICS. SHALL THEY ALSO CONVERT TO CHRISTIANITY???? you see what i mean, moron!
34. #8
(06.26.13)
why should they. every country that is judeo christian has a muslim minority just like israel does (who is a jewish nation and a jewish state) but you do not see muslims converting to christianity, do you? muslims and christians in israel ARE PROTECTED UNDER THE ISRAELI DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE FROM ITS INCEPTION. THEY ARE CITIZENS THAT GO TO UNIVERSITIES, RECEIVE MEDICAL CARE, FREE EDUCATION, FREE SERVICES, CAN BECOME AND PRACTICE ALL THE PROFESSIONS IN ISRAEL ALL THE WAY TO THE SUPREME COURT JUDGESHIP. so, all minorities in israel are protected under the law so why should they convert? no one is asking them to convert. they can live in israel, protected, and practice their own religion as they see fit under their own laws and islam or christianity. israel respects it all. now, take a look at saudi arabia instead. can i as a christian practice my religion in saudi arabia, in iran, in qatar, in lybia, etc.... not!!!!! but in israel, i can and do since israel, harold, is the only free and democratic jewish nation in the middle east and the only one that is by law tolerant, free, educated, literate, advanced and a major success story and where its arab citizens enjoy more freedom and prosperity than an y arab or palestinian in any of the muslim nations around israel, near and far. AND THAT IS A FACT!
35. Hi #7.
Israeli 2   (06.26.13)
I was only referring to the word "religion". Judaism, Baruch Hashem is NOT a religion. A "religion" is something concocted by people whereas Judaism is not. Others have religions, results of an epiphany, a sudden discovery, inventions or philosophies) Judaism is not like that. Judaism is a way of life based on the Torah given by G-d. So yes, I am correct.
36. israel is, ipso facto, a Jewish State
Essie HaKohane ,   USA   (06.26.13)
The passing of such a law implies that Israelis feel insecure about whether Israel is in toto a jewish State. An analogy is that some US states want to declare English the official language when in fact Spanish is very prevalent. Such a declaration really says that english is not anymore the official language.
37. A state not for people of the Jewish
john robey ,   austin, texas   (06.26.13)
religion but for people who are Jewish and for their culture. Kind of like a state for white people (and their culture) in Rhodesia. Right! Go ahead and build baby build...good luck with that one
38. MAKES NO SENSE!What in the world is"Jewish people & culture"
Dov   (06.26.13)
if not for Jewish religion according to Torah? According to Calderon/Yesh Atid distorted thinking, in order to preserve "equal rights", Arabs or any person living in Israel are part of the "Jewish people and culture". Calderon/Yesh Atid makes absolutely no sense.
39. jews are members of judaism, NOT
jrs   (06.26.13)
a people. There are white, black & yellow jews, no of which are relate in anyway with the ancient Hebrews.
40. The Knesset
Norman ,   Boca Raton / USA   (06.26.13)
Should pass a law automatically classifying anyone born in Israel as both Jewish and Israeli. Follow up laws should enforce the learning of Torah. As the citizens grow up they can then decide whether to continue following the Jewish religion or not. Perhaps it may be wise to strip all those who no longer wish to follow the religion of their citizenship and deport them or give them guest resident status if so desired. This will ensure that all Israelis are Jewish.
41. Seperate state from religion
Haim ,   TA   (06.26.13)
Religion at the end of the day is a belief not a fact. Israel claims to be a democracy yet is far from it. Any charter drawn up should recognise all citizens with equal rights and not be based on medevil religious so called morallity that has no place in the modern educated world. Seperate state from religion
42. No40 what about non Jews who are born in Israel?
(06.26.13)
43. #22 - Israeli 2
Devorah   (06.26.13)
Help me out, dear Israeli 2. What about the distinctive DNA of the Kohanim? Not every Kohane exhibits a Jewish soul despite the fact that they are the descendents of Aaron. Are they any less a Jew? How is that reconciled?
44. Jewish nation state
Avraham ,   Jerusalem   (06.26.13)
Everybody should know and recognize that being a Jew is not only his belonging only to the religion, but also to the Jewish nation. Torah was given to the people (Sons of Israel) and not to a religious group, so we have all rights to have our, Jewish, national state which should also be democratic, in order to assure all necessary rights to the minorities living in it!
45. What, no Lapid Haters suddenly?
gp ,   T.Aviv   (06.26.13)
All the Haredi MKs accusing him of hating Torah and hating them and what a goy he really is. Well?
46. It is about time
Dror ,   Haifa, Israel   (06.26.13)
Saudi Arabia is a hardcore Islamic Kingdom that prohibits all other religions from existing or practicing in their Kingdom. WE OWE THE WORLD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING... This is a Jewish country and state, period. Be glad we are not Saudi Arabia for all of those complaining. Don't like it? Well then don't let the door hit you in the a** on the way out..
47. borders anyone?
seth ,   Deering, USA   (06.26.13)
Will this "state" define its borders? Or is the voracious appetite of Jewish Racism to be given free rein to devour whosever's property stands in the path of its insatiable greed?
48. Zionists deserve peace and a Jewish state....
Wissam ,   Palestine   (06.26.13)
....in Uganda... Get out. This land is Palestinian Arab.
49. #43: Shalom Devorah! Thanks for asking
Israeli 2   (06.26.13)
When I say "soul" I was referring to the degree of level of the soul. The soul has 5 distinctive parts. The middle part is called "neshama" which not everyone can attain in his lifetime. All Kohanim have acchieved a very high level of "Soul" attainment to such a degree that for all generations the light "or haneshama" have penetrated their Ruach and nefesh (blood) establishing their imprint on their genes (DNA). So they are very special people despite that they are usually fast to anger and require to control that characteristic. That many are even "chilonim, have nothing to do with them being Jewish. Sometimes they have sinned in a certain life time and are required to return to do the tikun process as a Goy or as another life form even. That's why I replied to #16 the way I did. Much more to this.
50. Israel is a Jewish state
Syd Chaden ,   Palermo Calif USA   (06.26.13)
Israel was established by a largely anti-Semitic West to provide Jews a safe haven in an anti-Semitic world. They did not do so because of love, or even empathy, for the Jews. They did so because they wanted to prosecute the German hierarchy for war crimes, and the paramount war crime was the Holocaust. The West had not tried to prevent or to stop the Holocaust, and, in order to prosecute the Germans, they had to eliminate the possible defense that the West had been complicit in the Holocaust. Thus, the creation of the State of Israel. By definition, a state that is created to provide a safe place for Jews to live in an anti-Semitic world is a Jewish State.
51. Conversion
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (06.26.13)
Conversion to Judaism is difficult but it can be achieved. This proves one thing - being Jewish is being a part of a RELIGION, period. You can't convert into a race or an ethnicity. You can't convert to become Japanese for example. Also the fact that a Jewish merchant in Poland and a Jewish farmer in Ethiopia are clearly not similar, proves that it is only their RELIGION which unites them. So what does Lapid and co want? A religious state? Medinat halacha? Is that the underlying agenda here? If so then everyone is doomed. I bet if you do a survey of preferences between a medinat halacha and a European democracy then most citizens will choose the latter - including many many religious people.
52. Israel and Palestiniana peace agreements
JGad   (06.26.13)
....could Danon points of view regarding a Palestinian State.... and a " treasury" document as the "act of declaration of Israel independence" share a common agenda and state identity?
53. NO 12
Debra ,   Joburg   (06.26.13)
So will you state the same about the 57 Islamic states and the many Christian states. Or is this comment of "undemocratic" only reserved for the one Jewish state...?
54. Avowing Israel is a JEWISH STATE
Aisha2 ,   New Orleans, LA   (06.26.13)
ABOUT TIME!!!
55. COMPLETELY FAIR & JUSTIFIED
Elliot J. Stamler ,   New York, NY USA   (07.03.13)
This is a reasonable proposal that transmutes the Declaration of Independence into statutory law. Since it has been used de facto for that purpose by Israeli courts, it makes sense. Virtually every Arab state's constitution state that it is an Arab and Moslem nation. We additionally know there is very little true freedom of religion in most Arab and Moslem states-we read of their anti-Christian persecution daily and they expelled their Jews. If Israeli Arabs can't abide living in a formally Jewish state even with their religious rights fully protected, let them leave.
