les ,   canada   (07.09.13)
for the poor egyptians! i hope they don't think, (assuming they can think, i.e mbh) that israel will roll over and die. that 82 million can be reduced by 70% in the matter of minutes. think about it morsi fans....
33. #13 walid - excellent analysis
solomon ,   bklyn   (07.09.13)
yet something everyone has known for some time. Maybe you could edify us as to how this peace is to be accomplished with neighbors who want nothing of it; all they want is to kill the Jews and wipe Israel away. You are speaking to the wrong crowd, Go speak to the Egyptians and let us know the result.
34. Egypt must implement strict birth control.
naro ,   nyc   (07.09.13)
Their population is growing far faster then their narrow strip of arable land can support. Strategically they are in a mess as Israel can rupture the Aswan dam in case of war and flood 30 million Egyptians into the Mediterranean, and destroy their power supply.
35. Articals solution does not make sense
Ron ,   oc us   (07.09.13)
The more Arabs you feed the more they breed. Israel has the same problem with Arabs mow.
36. Marshall Plan Mark 2
Zechariah   (07.09.13)
What is needed is a massive Aid Programme with contributions from Oil Rich Islamic States and Elections in November with Mosi Released and a Provisional Government like happened in Zimbazwe when Mugabe and his Henchman went Ballistic .Swiss and other Accounts ought be Amnestied Secretly with a 50:50 redistribution as a first step .Mubareks Sons and the Court Circle ought pay back in stages 90 % of theWealth.
37. Help for Egypt
zelig ,   memphis,u.s.a.   (07.09.13)
We anglos say that G-d helps those who help themselves. The Egyptians have universities. What is coming out of these universities ? Can't they produce even ONE google or facebook or i-phone? Why can't they emulate South Korea, which was once an econimic basket case and is now an Asian powerhouse ? You can't feed starving people with m1-a1 tanks nor can you feed them with the latest f-16's.Egypt needs entrepreneurialism.courtesy of one Egyptian for another, and...birth control!!!
38. Short term & longer term recovery steps in Egypt
Alan ,   Canada   (07.09.13)
Is there still some hope Egypt can overcome its many tough problems & does not become a failed state & a dager for the region? The immediate needs are a return to some quieter security condition & the availability of grants/loans from foreign countries to replenish food stocks & energy sources. Once this is achieved, for the short to medium term, Egypt may lessen its economic dire straits by trying to restore the tourist industry & encourage Egyptians to emigrate as a way to slightly mitigate the population explosion & to create a source of foreign currency from wages sent back home. The longer term measures to insure a continuous economic progress are the more difficult to find since they involve social changes in education, the separation of state & religion, the full emancipation of women. These social changes are inherently slow in developing & even less likely to occur smoothly & quickly under poverty conditions which provide fertile ground for extremists to spread their divisive & violence promoting propaganda. However it may be that the Muslim Brotherhood good showing a year ago at the polls is not as significant as it appears. After voters not initially affiliated with the Brotherhood discovered they voted uselessly against the Mubarak regime in choosing Morsi. So the remaining hard core supporters of overthrown president may not as numerous as a year ago. This does not mean their bent for violence is less dangerous for the stability of important industries such as tourism & shipping through the Suez canal.
39. A very odd article!
Michael Redbourn ,   Arad   (07.09.13)
Eitan Haber couldn't think of anything more meaningful to write about? Brazil pop. 199,321,413 Uruguay pop. 3,316,328 Between the years 2007 and 2009, Uruguay was the only country in the Americas which did not technically experience a recession and was the first Latin American country to export hi-tech. There are lots of very hungry people in Brazil. Is Brazil about to attack Uruguay, and/or why hasn't it? Similar reasoning.
40. Eitan Haber has a new threat every week
Shalom Freedman ,   Jerusalem Israel   (07.09.13)
Mr. Haber is scared. He is always scared. Usually the roof is going to fall in , if we do not make some great concession to the Palestinian Arabs. But if not that, then there will be some other way in which poor, weak, terrible Israel is threatened by something it should be doing that it is not. Why blame Israel for every problem in the world? Why suppose it can solve problems superpowers cannot ? Mr. Haber assumes that we have control over so many things we do not. We cannot make Peace with those who really do not want Peace with us. He was involved with Oslo when we tried to do that, and failed. A bit of modesty about our own power and place in the world is something we should all have.

AL QUDS AL YAHUDI ,   QUDS HAKA AL YAHUD   (07.09.13)
No why should Israel waste one atom bomb on Aswan Dam. Israel will drop few strong bombs on Aswan, and the Egyptian nation will turn into fishes, and the atom bomb can be use on Iran or another Islamic country.
42. Best suggestion ever

44. Mr Haber # 1 lesson is "what if" doesnt count
Yardena   (07.09.13)
# 2 lesson such negative and wimpy editorials should scare us? youre scared.. Ynet what are you thinking printing panic attacks that dont exist? Egyptians should take responsibility and curb their birth rate. easy to make a baby- try to feed it 2nd- Egypt should have an agricultural program why not have it? 3rd all oil rich arab states where are they when one of their brothers is in need? why is it Israel's problem? indeed Mr Haber - you need a reality check
45. to #13 the problem is arabs want full controll
ghostq   (07.09.13)
over Israel, geographic wise, Israel links between 3 continents, it is all done for money and power, mainly for teritory, they wil invent any idiology just not to have someone who isn't islamic or arab in the ME, they try to desolve the jewish identity, even the jews who were expelled from the arab nation, according to the arabs, r not reall jewish but actually arabs. not true but the arab world is greedy. want something they thought was worthless 70 years ago. the natural Gaz Israel has discoverd in her teritory, the other arab nations wanted piece of that as well.
46. Headline
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (07.09.13)
I thought that this was a serious article according to its headline. Then I saw the author's name..... But I read most of it anyway and wasn't surprised by its simplistic nonsense. A pinch of salt springs to mind.
47. Walid Spain no 13
AL QUDS AL YAHUDI ,   QUDS HAKA AL YAHUD   (07.09.13)
Total of Islamic not 200 million but over 1.6 BILLION. You have admitted that Israel is military power, with tech, and atom bombs. You can be sure Israel will defend itself with all he power she have. Your leaders knows very well if they attack Israel and try to destroy the Jewish nation, they too will be destroyed. Israel and the Jews will make 1 MILLION PERCENT sure that Islam go down with their first Cousin the Jews.

50. Let us guard our boundaries in the face of
Yair Shefi ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.09.13)
the dislocation taking place all about us: north, east and south. This is not a time for changes and concessions to people who even refuse to accept our right to be here. This is rather time to maintain our calm, inner and outer strength so as to ensure that we are not swept by the waves of "spring" that have never been but rather dark, stormy and bloody on-going "winter" all around us.
51. They can
Madison ,   USA   (07.09.13)
munch on each other selected by lots. if they walk thru Sinai to attack Israel it will sink or drift off . Haber you are constant in your dire warning to give up, curl up and beg Arabs take over Israel. Go visit in Jenin and make friends and tell us how great it was

It's frightening to see how frightened Haber is all the time. It's more frightening why he get's to share his fright with us all the time.

56. (13) Peace with the Arabs & Palestinians.
tiki ,   belgium   (07.09.13)
Walid, you seem to 'forget two important things in your analyses. There is 'supposed to be peace between Israel & Egypt and Israel and the country with 75% Palestinians (Jordan). The Palestinan Arabs in Judea/Samaria all had Jordanian passports, which were revoked overnight by the Jordanian King! So, there is Peace and there is a Palestinian country. The problem is that most Arabs have a short memory, don't abide their own signed contracts, prefer war over peace and anarchy over civilization to get their way. That's a shame!
57. Yair in Haifa
Dror ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.09.13)
Tha is my son's name and you are absolutely one hundred percent correct.
58. To those who responded to my comments
#13 Walid ,   Spain   (07.09.13)
I am glad that I managed to encourage five of the readers to respond to my comments. Each one of you had a different view point and that is good because it opens up a debate. And that is exactly what is needed. Sitting and doing nothing in this rapid age will only accumulate more problems and more issues unresolved. The majority of Arabs no longer talk about throwing the Jews in the sea. Many want peace and it was proposed to Israel by the Arab League during their last meeting in Lebanon. This was an opportunity that Israel ignored. Why? Israel´s survivor is only guaranteed by peace with all its neighbors. Only when this is achieved, and I dont say it is easy, will Israel survive. One very important Israeli politician once told me ¨you can take the Jew out of the Ghetto but your cannot take the Ghetto out of the Jew.¨ Israel as it is today is nothing but a big Ghetto secluded from all its surrounding.
59. what a stupid, pointless article...
Avi ,   netanya   (07.09.13)
60. uncomplete analysis
Greg ,   Tel Aviv   (07.09.13)
Eitan wrote a very good article from which seems to be missing one element - which I will try to address now - and which is sociological. It is about the natural tendency (if not law) which consists of seeing nations crushing under their own weigth and inconsistencies. If there is such a thing as an arab nation (from a political perspective) we are seeing that all these are slowly crushing under their own sociological weigth . Basically these highly tribal nations cannot take on growth, evolution or complexity and turn it to their advantage like it is the case in the judeo-christian or far east populations. Egyptians are just doing their own "Egyptian exodus" just thousands of years after anyone else. In the worst case scenario the situation there (and Syria, and levanon and ...) will stall and be a threat to themselves only - in the best case scenario they will go though an enlightment period (which took 200 years in Europe).
