1. Why is Israel keeping mum ?
Ed ,   Phila. PA   (07.10.13)
Probably because there's not one possible thing to be said that would be useful to the Egptian people or in Israel's interest.
2. What's wrong with minding our own business?
Rachel ,   US   (07.10.13)
This is an Egyptian decision. Let them figure it out.
3. Articles like this are surely meant to "take the piss" out
tom ,   tel aviv   (07.10.13)
of us, aren't they?
4. Israel govt should keep quiet
aiman ,   jersey   (07.10.13)
and watch the border. If private citizens wanna speak out thats up to them.
5. Wiser not to mixe in their quarrel...
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (07.10.13)
since at the end of the day ,they will reconcile, turning us into their common enemy. However,we should learn Arabic ,in order to understand without help of interpreters, their intentions towards us,
6. "I feel close to the Egyptian people...
Yossef   (07.10.13)
...and I am sure there are many other Israelis who feel the same way." I do.
7. Why is Israel keeping mum? A stupid question actually,
A ,   Belgium   (07.10.13)
Why should Israel get involved when moslems are butchering each other? Actually, its the best thing that could happen to Israel so best keep quiet and let the moslems continue to do what they do best.
8. Why is Israel keeping silent?
Jacob Blues ,   New York City, USA   (07.10.13)
While not an Israeli, I can think of two things that might make Israelis shrug their shoulders and say a collective - but silent - meh - to the events going on in Egypt. Last year, Mohammed Mosri, then Egypt's president, was found to have given an interview that called on Egyptians to both hate and kill Jews. Now, Egyptian protesters are complaining about Morsi's rule - in part by labelling him a Jew, complete with showing pictures of Morsi's face inside the middle of an Israeli flag. If both sides of Egypt's political field want to use Jews as a scape-goat for their troubles, then why should Israelis go out of their way to support one side or the other. The idea that there is a "civil society" in Egypt that deserves supporting falls flat. Indeed, even Mr. Beck states "There are many phenomena in revolutionary Egypt which concern and alarm me. Mainly, the anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiments spreading across all sectors of society". The only caveat to add to Mr. Beck's comments is that such bigotry and racism have not spread, but are endemic to all Egyptians, including the so-called elites, and have been there for some time.
9. Eldad Beck, you answered your own question
Devorah   (07.10.13)
"I explained that the Israeli government has no choice. If it stands by one party or another, it will immediately be accused of being the source of all of Egypt's troubles since the days of the Pharaohs. Most Egyptians are anyway accustomed to blaming Israel for everything." While your treacly sentiments are noble in theory, history dictates that, no matter what Israel does or does not do, no matter who she supports or does not support, she will take a hit below the belt one way or another. This is not a time for, "I'm Ok, You're Ok." Israel must prepare for war and forget about going to Happy Camp.
10. Should Israel "Keep Mum" about Egypt?
Syd Chaden ,   Palermo Calif USA   (07.10.13)
All that Israel would have to do is say something complimentary about a party or candidate, and that person would become the target of a Jihad. With the exception of the Coptic Christians and some of the younger secularists, all of those involved in the Egyptian struggle for power are Muslims, governed by the Quran. As such, they must heed the Islamic doctrine of "Death to the Infidels", which includes "Death to the Jews". And so, if one party might be more favorable for Israel, Israel should "keep mum" about it.
11. Eldad : comments of Shuk
Avram Goldsmith ,   Toronto, Canada   (07.10.13)
This the trial and the trap for Israel to succomb to Middle East /Lavant mentality and philosophy. Keep your Jewish indentity far from them, because we have NOTHING IN COMMON WITH THEM.
12. Actually we should speak and speak out a lot
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (07.10.13)
All Egyptians hate us, Muslim Brotherhood, the seculars, Copts, Sunni, Shia, etc. etc. So we know whichever group we back the others will turn on and destroy. So we announce how much we support the Muslim Brotherhood - the rest of the Egyptians will rush to kill them while the MB is busy denying it. After a couple weeks we announce that now we support the Sufis, etc. etc. We don't have to do anything else but watch them tear themselves apart
13. eldad beck is a moron
alexi   (07.10.13)
israel should continue to say nothing about affairs in egypt. it is not its business. Beck knows nothing, same as livni in moscow asking for russian troops on the golan which a half with would know would be a plus for syria. Beck is like olmert trusting jew hating erdogan and almost giving the golan to assad no less. I'll tell you what is obvious. The jews are not chosen, never were and are no better than anyone else. They have a good country led understandably by a damaged leadership from 3000 years of torture.
14. The whole question is so stupid. Why do we keep mum?
Ari ,   Jerusalem   (07.10.13)
As a good Jew I will answer you with another question " why not.?" Egypt is the bigger producer of anti-Semitic propaganda and anti-Semitism in the world. When the Egyptian revolution started two years ago the first target was the Israeli Embassy. More than one voice was heard to finish the peace treaty with Israel. Some of those voices were also secular. Si why should we keep Mum? They wanted to exterminate the Children of Israel in Pharos time. And again the modern Pharos like Nasser and even Sadat wanted to finish Pharos and Hitler's Job. Didn't they vanished and persecuted the Jewish community in Egypt in the 40's and again in the 60's. Of a flourishing community of more than 150.000 people and thousands of years old today Egypt has maybe 100 "crazy" jews living there. This is G-d's punishment the prophesies have become a reality. "He who dams Israel shall be damned". The Coptic are no better toward the Jews
15. quite a ridiculous op-ed
the mad zionist ,   San Francisco   (07.10.13)
being Israel, the best thing to do is keep mum. the second anyone opens their mouth they are reamed for butting into their internal affairs. and when you keep quiet, you get slammed too. there's no winning here. the next thing to do when a neighboring country or any country that's going through massive internal strife is to keep your mouth shut.
16. Which side do you suggest we support?
Ajax ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (07.11.13)
The one burning Israeli flags or the one burning Israeli flags?
17. #12 Gee
Jordan Ariel ,   USA   (07.10.13)
That is BRILLIANT!!!!
18. you must be kidding!! best thing Israel can do is itself be
Rafi ,   US   (07.11.13)
... a good example & role model of a civil society , On that count, there is still plenty of work to do BEFORE giving advice to others (who would never accept it in any case...)
19. The write is delusional
Maurice ,   Montreal   (07.11.13)
Both sides of the revolution hate Israel. Haven;t you seen the side you are supporting burning Israel's flags?
20. article
josh ,   Usa   (07.11.13)
"Change is also hope for something better for all of us, Jews and Arabs alike." Persians too:) (hopefully)
21. "civil society"
michel ,   Ashkelon   (07.11.13)
This civil society is composed by people that would dance on the roofs is all jews were tortured and killed. So......
22. to17
nuha   (07.11.13)
the briliant when they leave israil to do its bussiness....lool
23. Mum Israel
C.B. ,   Rigaud, Canada   (07.11.13)
Sometimes, (often?), keeping quiet is best, especially officially. Voiced support for Egyptian civil society will do nothing to endear a secularly run Egypt to Isreal. Let's not forget forget that the civil demonstraters were not above assaulting their sisters at their demonstrations. And endemic anit-semitism ... . I think the point is made.
24. Easy Answer--- Because we don't know if it will do more harm
Jo   (07.11.13)
than good and don't want to make it worse. Better to do what we can for those in need behind the scenes than make loud noises that may only backfire on us and make thins worse. Wiser.
25. Why?
Or ,   Ramat HaSharon   (07.11.13)
Because as Arabic nations have proved again and again that they are not civilized and a) don't want to be or b) don't know how to be. They are primitive by nature. There is a reason why Israel is the only democracy in Middle East. Arabs need dictatorship otherwise they behave like rabid dogs. Syria and Egypt are prime examples.
26. They would prefer Israelis to protest for Palestinians
Dave ,   Sao Paulo, Brazil   (07.11.13)
I don't think the people living in countries neighboring Israel wil ever like Israelis unless they start demonstrating that they are against the Israeli government's policies towards Palestinians. So protesting in favor of them will probably just embarass them.
27. Both sides in Egypt want to see Israel destructed
Jewish Patriot ,   Galut   (07.11.13)
So I say let them kill each other, Arabic sport = killing each other all the time. I seriously start to think they love and enjoy killing, why they cannot leave in peace??
28. Beck is correct
Stan ,   Israel   (07.11.13)
Why are Jews always happy when Arabs kill one another? (See some of the talkbacks} My first reaction to the overthrow of Morsi was that I hope that things will settle down quickly and that there won't be continued bloodshed. I pity the Egyptian People and their impossible economic situation. I have lived in Israel for now for 51 years, and never learned Arabic. (It was difficult enough learning Hebrew) Even if we do not speak and read their language, we should respect their culture. Relate to every non Jew as a human being and not as an enemy. Not every Arab is like Nasrallah or even Hanin Zuabi. They live among us, they are our doctors and dentists. Our nurses and pharmacists. They are engineers and professors. As I said to my wife, I don"t care where my neighbor comes from, as long as he is a "mensch"
29. I really appreciate the efforts of the
Democrat   (07.11.13)
Egyptians to take strides towards real democracy. Meantime, their way is full of hardships and dangers, but I guess for them it's worth every little stride. As for us Israelis, it's not a matter of keeping mum, it is a matter of keeping alive.
30. A "kiss of death" ...
Johannes ,   Norway   (07.11.13)
...is what Israeli support for the new Egyptian rulers would mean. Sadly enough that's the reality!
