1. No increase or decrease of budget will make any significant
tom ,   tel aviv   (07.12.13)
change, as long as there's no political will to destroy the enemy and that is exactly what our "Dear Leaders" have been lacking for the past 20 odd years. Pointless speculation at this moment.
2. all the money goes to salaries.
kobi ,   israel   (07.12.13)
Nothing left for training airplanes tanks. for vications for points to buy clouths in the shekem to the early retirments they do not care about israel, they care about them. almost all of them doing nothing and so many administrators, so many. and in any war they only loose. 2 month to take bint gmail in lebanon, if we were in russia the chif of staff was now in sibir with his famely. we need to sale this army to privet company not to sovil servent.
3. This could work
TC   (07.12.13)
But the main problem will be the first condition detailed in this article: Would you believe that our enemies will wait patiently that the IDF is fully ready to deal with them?
4. largely agree
CJK   (07.12.13)
it is not very rational to cut so much precisely at a time of great uncertainty and need. the operational plan of integrating the various services is an excellent idea and should proceed. however, part of the cuts should be cancelled so as to provide a bridge and also a field experiment in case of next war. personally i wonder whether purchasing the F-35 is such a good idea, but I am not an expert.
5. lots of whys here
Yardena   (07.12.13)
why not give the bold plan a chance of wait and see ? why prejudge before anything is accomplished? to be so impatgient is childish im sure Israel knows exactly what to do and how to defend the Homeland without theories of defeat and nay saying. Besides, WHY discuss this with the world of strangers? these editorials becoming dumb and dumber self defeating motives
6. And, all of this is necessary...
Beary White ,   Norway   (07.12.13)
... because of the evil religion of islam, which has twisted the brains of millions. The aim for islam is to seek death!! That is the ultimate goal to reach, suggested by their uppermost betrayer in their islamic religion.. And the world is silent against this cult, which have killed more people than HA....
7. A change of mentality could do wonders !
Patrick A. Hammel ,   Zermatt, Switzerland   (07.12.13)
Stop calling Hezbollah by its name and start calling them Lebanese and that it is Lebanon that will pay a heavy price if those "lebanese'" provoke Israel as they have done in the past! That will do wonders to those in Lebanon who are not yet concerned about the negative impact those shia warriors have on their country! Also is it too much asking from ynetnews to translate kobi's letter into english before posting it, even in his writing one can hear the abhorrent hebrew accent while speaking english!!!! Shabbat Shalom to all.
8. Donation?
Proud Israel ,   Israel   (07.12.13)
If all Israeli Jews donated just one shekel, we could help the army raise about six million shekels. Surely, everybody has a shekel to spare to protect our nation. Someone petition and Internet savvy please set this up and I will help spread the word day and night.
9. There's no time left!!!
Jake Stone ,   USA   (07.12.13)
This plan will never be implemented, because all-out war is just around the corner!
10. Ben Yishai: IDF to still use cannon
Norbus ,   Jerusalem   (07.12.13)
Too old fashioned to understand the dynamics of armed forces, and desperate to hand in any piece to get his quota in to get paid, This author shows both stupidity and greed in the cause of earning a wage. Tanks are now death traps, war planes , too costly and slow, men on the ground a liability more than an asset in big situations
11. All these new electronics mean nothing if
Yosi ,   Gilo-Jerusalem   (07.12.13)
even one EMP bomb gets through from Iran or any of our neighbors. Need to rethink all this new "strategy to include that factor.
12. More money for defense, not less.
michael Pielet ,   israel   (07.12.13)
Israel should be investing more assets, not less in its defense. The army and the politicians were saying the same thing before the Yom Kippur war. We all know how that turned out. Another war is certainly coming and it will be fought with tanks, artillery and infantry.
13. Obsolence
tom ,   new york   (07.12.13)
Even obsolete jets are faster than helicopters , and obsolete tanks still have cannons , obsolete ships can be transferred to the police until all new weapon systems arrive in Israel.
14. Warfare has changed
Yael Schlichting ,   currently Munich   (07.12.13)
This is what we, including Ron Ben-Yishai, need to internalize. On the one side, the production of Tanks like Merkava IV is expensive and takes its time. On the other side, the older models like Merkava II will only be targets in a future war. Second, we need to understand, that most of our enemies do not rely on traditional warfare any more. They have discovered the advantages of asymmetric warfare, terror and guerilla tactics. They do not want to hit military targets. They only want to cause as many civilian casualties in Israel as possible. With the Lebanon war in 2006 and with operation cast lead, we should have learned, that we need the capability to put out a fire within a few days. This means, that we need the capability to lead strikes that scare our enemies to death and in the aftermath only do clean up work. Third, with Merkava IV we have a superb battle machine, but our enemies are working a lot to neutralize it. There are newer concepts on the doorstep and we need to look at them rather building traditional battle tanks. Israel is a master of implementing new ideas. Sometimes new ideas scare us, but do we have many choices? To be honest, we always must be ahead. We need the better strategies, the better tactics and the better technologies and we need to achieve all this with a limited amount of resources.

17. Debka reported on this several months ago.
Jake ,   USA   (07.13.13)
According to Debka, the simplest way to describe the overhaul, is that the new army will in fact be several smaller armies working in harmony with one another. Sounds interesting, especially considering that there are different enemies on different borders that the IDF will have to deal with simultaneously in the event of a regional/world-war. There is also the possibility that this entire story is a diversion, meant to bait Iran into striking Israel during the fictional transition period, giving Israel the legal justification to hit back hard and neutralize the Iranian threat.
18. @ Proud Israel #8
Etienne Prinsloo ,   Nova Scotia Canada   (07.13.13)
Very sensible thought, and workable. So many pro Democratic Jews in the USA have stopped caring about their ancestry and embrace Hussain Obama's hate for Israel. There are, however, many people, even non Jewish who would gladly support this cause. After all every mosque is a fundraiser for the global expansion of Islam. Even the poorest Muslims happily donate to their cause. Remember, we are not talking luxury here we are talking about the very existence of Israel and the Jewish people.
19. Asymmetrical warfare.
Etienne Prinsloo ,   Nova Scotia Canada   (07.13.13)
Russia entered Afghanistan with doctrine from the Fifties and were soundly beaten. America spent trillions in both Iraq and Afghanistan with mediocre results, fielding an impressive war machine with absolute air and electronic superiority. Admittedly, allowing the left wing press and public opinion to shackle their every move did not help. Israel is an island in a sea of hostility with many of the countries well armed by the USA in the name of profit only. See recent transfer of F16's to Egypt and add now the biased unconditional support of the Muslim Brotherhood! The Democrats are progressively moving away from Israel into the radical Islam fold, led by their Mullah, Obama. Sun Tzu's doctrine, interpreted by Mao soundly thrashed America's superior war machine in Vietnam, seeing the most chaotic military withdrawal of modern history. So, David can defeat Goliath but the slingshot needs to be sound and true. If you wish for peace, or in Israel's case basic survival, prepare for war.
20. just a thought
commentator ,   world   (07.13.13)
No matter how skilled or big the IDF is, without Judea and Samaria Israel is defenseless and will lose a war. But with Judea and Samaria, Israel can make mistakes and still survive.
21. Gantz didn't exagerrate and you will pay heavy price.
