4. Arab Literacy
RickD ,   USA   (07.14.13)
"the total number of books translated into Arabic during the 1,000 years since the age of Caliph Al-Ma’moun [a ninth-century Arab ruler who was a patron of cultural interaction between Arab, Persian, and Greek scholars] to this day is less than those translated in Spain in one year” Illiteracy in the Arab world will continue to keep the Arabs from moving into the modern world. During the 2006 Lebanon war it was revealed that Hezbollah operatives were listening to IDF radio transmissions. I'm sure that many Arabs in the West Bank also speak Hebrew and watch Israeli TV.
5. Learning Hebrew
Imani ,   Saudi Arabia   (07.14.13)
By the way our prophet peace be upon him ordered one of his companions his young cousin Ali to study Hebrew lg and he asked him to go and live among them that is jews , and don't come back unless he knows how to speak , read and write and after three weeks he comes back even the prophet peace be upon him was too much surprised of the short time that Ali spends to learn So if the prophet peace be upon him was alive he would have asked us to learn Hebrew too, I think to join an Internet class after ramadan but I am not sure of their treatment especially if they know that I am Saudi ...?????!!!!!
6. Israeli media is not a good place to learn correct Hebrew
an Israeli   (07.15.13)
Once upon a time Israelis spoke correct Hebrew. Nowadays the people have gone dumb. There are hardly people who don't make errors, even in the media, even hosts of programs about books, even authors, even editors, even translators. It's terrible. I assume the Egyptians speak better Hebrew than the Israelis.
7. To: Imani at No. 5

We never turn away those who wish to learn more about us. Especially someone who comes with curiosity and a desire to know more about their neighbors (and Israel is here to stay). You should find a way to come here (you can do it easiest through Jordan). I assure you that you will find a receptive audience -- at least among the Jewish people. You will also find something considerably better than a Wahhabist Islamic society, with its hundreds of princelings who can -- at most times -- be found violating all of the laws of Islam in the casinos of Monte Carlo. What you will not find is any palaces. No 24 karat bathroom fixtures. Then again, I find myself asking: would you miss those? No shortage of them in Saudi Arabia. You would be treated as an honored guest in Israel. You are welcome to join an Internet class, but I caution you to remember where you live, and that your government controls every aspect of your life. YOUR life. Not the lives of the innumerable Saudi princelings who can be found guzzling alcohol, hob-nobbing with scantily dressed European women and generally, living in accordance with quite a different set of rules than those which apply to the average Saudi. Marhaba, Imani. Give us a try; you'll like us.
8. the Promise Land
Henry ,   ISRAEL   (07.17.13)
It's already has been crossed through all the red lines where Israel can not afford such things to allow them to cross the boundaries of a sovereign country. I think Israel need to show them who is really the boss here, or on the other hand ''God Forbid'', it will take a place for a bad end for them.. Israel does not need right now such adventures and I hope Israel signal them in order let them understand (and they know very well) the capability of the IDF how to defend the Promise Land.
9. SMALL NATION,BUT CLEVER ONE
HARRY ,   ISRAEL/USA   (07.17.13)
I'll just in favor that all Middle east would speak Hebrew even fluently.. It makes me happy that language of such a small country like Israel has an influence in the Region

We don't care what your background is. I hope you enjoy learning Hebrew :-)
11. I hope all Israelis are fluent in Arabic.
Harry Wright ,   UK   (07.18.13)
You ought to understand what they are saying about you (hostile or not). You ought to be able to blend in with them undetected for all kinds of reasons!
12. Mark the difference
(07.20.13)
It is a gross mistake to use "Jews", "Israeli", "Muslim", "Egyptian" without marking the difference between the terms. 1. An "Israeli" is anybody carrying an Israeli Citizenship. An Israeli can be ethnic Arab, Jewish, Christian, Japanese, etc. 2. "Muslim, Jewish, Christian" show the Religion of a person: a Christian can be Israel, Egyptian, etc., Yes, confusing, but the confusion is a result of lack of education, disinformation and superficiality of the education system, of the media, and also of intentional disinformation.
13. Arabic in Israel
Arieh ben Israel ,   Carmiel, Israel   (08.21.13)
Harry, your point is well taken, however when the State of Israel was established in 1948 the Arab countries essentially shot themselves in the foot by exiling hundreds of thousands of Jews from the Arabic countries and these Jews naturally came to Israel. This provided the newly reborn state with new immigrants who not only spoke Arabic fluently, but were also intimately acquainted with the differing customs and dialects in those Arabic countries. Many of these new immigrants contributed enormously to the effectiveness of Israel's intelligence services then and now. I am an mother-tongue English speaker who has learned both Hebrew and Arabic as well as ( and this is, I admit, a bit strange ) the Lakhota language of the Northern Lakhota tribe of Native Americans. In Israel, it is normal for people here to be at least bi-lingual or tri-lingual. I've met many here who have fluency in five, six, seven or more languages. At my advanced age, I'll just stick with the ones I know and leave it at that. All the best, Arieh ben Israel
