1. Sir, you are delusional..The Golus Jew is on finite time
Al   (07.16.13)
Make no mistake about it. As Israel is on a fast track to becoming a very wealthy nation, the Jew in the golus will become the butt of the anti-semites animus. Witness, the EUs decision to boycott goods from the Judea Samaria. Witness the open anti-semitism that is becoming Pc in the west. Israel is becoming wealthy. It is becoming the R&D capital of the world. Anyone who is anyone in the world of technology, bio medical research etc beats a path to Israel for the latest technological innovations. That is a fact. The golus Jew is becoming old insignificant and more and more irrelevant to the world Jewish scene. Israel will continue to progress while the world golus Jew is descending into the abyss of yesterday. The future for the Jew is Israel.
2. What is this pablum puke??
Dror ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.16.13)
This must be a Reform Rabbi writing all of this pablum puke. Discourse shmiscourse. Listen Mr. Rabbi YOU ARE AT THE END OF THE LINE. Buy a friggin clue. It is Israel or nothing. Don't believe me? Just wait... The day is fast approaching Mr Rabbi.
3. Listen, my beloved knocks
Akiva   (07.16.13)
Sorry Mr Kariv, the boat is being spectacularly missed and these kinds of opinion articles only obscure the issue. The Jewish people have waited two thousand years to be in the land. Not just waited, but yearned, prayed, longed, shed rivers of tears and blood to be there. For two thousand years. Now we all have that chance and so many are blindly missing it. Why? That very "non-orthodox Judaism", ie, borderline anti-religious liberalism, which you stand for is the cause and effect. Providing a comfortable figleaf for Jews to wear so they can live basically however they wish, think whatever they wish, marry whomever they wish while not having to bear the overwhelming negative consequences of having jettisoned the heritage of their parents. That heritage is not only Torah, but Israel too. All the flag waving, money throwing and lip service in the World mean nothing. Israel doesn't need your support, Israel needs you. Today was Tisha B'Av, when we sit back and remember how two thousand years ago we lost everything precious to us. We realize the galut is not where we need to be and secularistic contortions of Judaism are not who we are. It's time to come home. We have the opportunity and the obligation. Don't miss both.
4. Indifference to immigrants is amazing
Carolax   (07.16.13)
verges on hostility - unless you're well-placed patronage-wise you will be treated as a nobody and continually asked why you are here. Not only Anglos, all diaspora Jews are also considered fair game for menial job slavery (that is, if you are able to get any work at all). The entrenched snobbism is disgusting.
5. It's the Nuclear age
Zechariah   (07.16.13)
In the nuclear age it's just madness to have the Jews in one Place Futher it goes against at least the Premessianic Doctrine of The Prophesy that the Nations will be Blessed through the Jews. The Jewish Israeli Authorities do need greater Aliyah but Security ought be based not only on Deterrance which does work for Murder Suicide Cults.
6. who has missed the point?
iselin ,   Oslo, Norway   (07.16.13)
Do talkbackers #1-3 live in Lala-land? Do they really think that Israel is the center of the universe? Sounds like it. Most Jews in the Diaspora will never move to Israel. They donate money, because they don't want to live there with all the infighting, religious nuts, rude people and blistering hot climate, and most important, low salaries. If the general attitude in Israel remains as it is, many Diaspora Jews will stop writing those large checks and leave the religious nuts to continue procreating and reading the Torah. And then where will you be?
7. The beginning of the end for American secular Jewry.
michael Pielet ,   israel   (07.16.13)
Reform and Conservative Jews in the United States, because of a lack of Jewish education, lack of Jewish identity are in the process of assimilating into american secular christianity. I wish there children would see the need to remain Jewish and marry Jews.
8. Tone of article is hostile and biased.
BobK ,   Orlando US   (07.16.13)
At first I thought Rabbi Kariv made a few fair points e.g. about the orthodox rejection of conservative and reform Judaism both products of gentile influence and assimilation forces. In Israel most people are not orthodox either and plenty resent the rabbinate.. Then he revealed his extremist anti-Israel views claiming that the diaspora helped Israel revive a sense of 'community and social responsibility' - Israel is based on these values. to cap it all he claims Israel is "addicted to force" ! Wow maybe the rabbi should run and tell the EU and UN just how bad we are. The rabbi needs to learn moderation in his expression and not get lost in anti-Israel attitudes of the West.
9. Reform, reinventing the wheel
Yonatan ,   Modiin   (07.16.13)
So tiresome, please stop trying to invent things.
10. Thank you for writing this.
Lauren ,   B7   (07.16.13)
11. Akiva
Dror ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.16.13)
You are a master wordsmith my friend. I take my hat off to you. Your response, puts my response to shame. I especially liked the term secular contortions. The good Rabbi is certainly performing contortions left and right in his opinion article all I could think to call it was pablum puke.
12. Diaspora Jews
CJK   (07.17.13)
they have made a pact with obama to stick a knife in the back of the jewish sovereign state of Israel..
13. Pablum puke?
SML ,   Massachusetts, USA   (07.17.13)
Israel or nothing? When you're having your nice little civil war with the Haredi hordes drop those of us in the US a line and remind us how it's Israel or nothing. Take control of the country back from the Haredim and maybe I'll listen. Till then put a sock in it and look inwards a bit.
14. Jews cannot afford to be all in one place.
leo ,   usa   (07.17.13)
Besides some have to stay out in the field and protect Israel's interests from there.
15. Addicted to force?
Shalom Freedman ,   Jerusalem Israel   (07.17.13)
The author of this piece was doing quite well until he inserted parenthetically the slur that Israel is 'addicted to force'. What is that supposed to mean? It is a wholesale condemnation of Israeli society, and shows a total misunderstanding of the violent threats Israel faces everyday. I would also say that the author of the piece should worry a bit more assimilation in the United States, and especially the part which has contributed to the increase of anti- Israeli Jewish voices in the Diaspora.
16. Rabbi
Edouard ,   Montreal Canada   (07.17.13)
Why this rabbi would not a real job Since when rabbi is a profession that need to be payed Go and work ,and stop your anti Israeli Comments In israel most of population dislike this religious parasites Why are we giving them power ?????
17. Can start by making Israel a Jewish state and not Orthodox
Avi   (07.17.13)
As a Jewish state it represents and is a home to all Jews to identify in, not just a single religious sect. It's mind boggling the traditions of other Jewish groups aren't even recognized while the Orthodox maintain a monopoly. This need is further strengthened by the fact that quite commonly an Orthodox would reply to this notion claiming they are the only Jews and non-orthodox are heretic posers. They need a dose of reality and modesty and this is a good way to start.
18. This progressive does not speak for me.
BH ,   Iowa   (07.17.13)
19. #3:You can wax poetic as much as you like Sir, but the fact
tom ,   tel aviv   (07.17.13)
remains, that imagining a Land of Torah obeying frummes, I see Bney Brak/ Mea Shearim, (Brooklyn if you must): a very UNIFORM mass of people...then I think of Peoples China, North Korea, Stalinist Russia & each and every "istic" regime that sees One Mind-set (usually also one garb) as their goal and I GET SHIVERS all the way to my toes! And these are not shivers of joy, oh no. I don't think that the Imaginary One had in mind only one set of "haute couture" for His Chosen Ones?
20. To No. 3 Akiva
Joe Bliksem ,   Raanana Israel   (07.17.13)
You could not have said it better.
21. Dear Rabbi, please zoom out
Efi ,   Israel   (07.17.13)
Today there are millions of Israelis who are busy with the everyday struggle of building up and maintaining the state of Israel. This means providing for their families in a tough economy, fighting economic cartels, worrying about their kids on the frontlines, and spending hard earned free time on a beach or a cafe. These people are born, for the most part, in Israel and spend their whole lives in Israel. Why on earth would these people think about Jews thousands of miles away from them who they have never seen? If most American Jews have not bothered to visit Israel, why would Israelis be aware of them in any major way? Your expectations are simply unrealistic, my friend. Israelis in 2013 have nothing at all against Diaspora Jews. It just isn't an issue. There's too many other thing going on locally. Jews who do not live in Israel are not second class citizens, they are just outside of the Israeli picture. Don't expect anything else, please!
22. As usual...
Neal ,   Minneapolis USA   (07.17.13)
Such anger and vituperation! Obviously, many black-kipa Israelis are very threatened by any deviation from the practices of Lithuania. In fact, the Reform rabbi makes a number of good points. But any suggestion that Israelis need take galut Jews' opinions into account is, I believe, incorrect. Israelis are the people who live in Israel and they are perfectly capable of making their own decisions -- no matter how wrong-headed some people think those decisions to be. It is not our place to tell Israelis what to do -- and certainly not what risks to take with their lives and the lives of their children. But the religious question is another matter. I think Israel needs to support the non-Orthodox streams. What is happening no is "my way or no way," which plays out very badly in a conversion protocol that demands Jews by choice make commitments to keep the very laws that the majority of Israelis ignore. One of the sad things I occasionally see in my (Conservative) shul is a visiting secular Israeli who accepts an aliyah and except for reading the Irvrit perfectly, has almost no idea of what to do on the bima. I would bet that the graduates of my sons' K-6 (non-Orthodox) Jewish day school have more Jewish knowledge that a large number of secular Israelis.
23. More excuses upon excuses
Dror ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.17.13)
The golus Jews are getting plenty of warning and plenty of proof. Just open your eyes, there are no more excuses. The Jews of the golus will lose close to everything they have in what is rapidly approaching. Those that are lucky and have something left will beg to leave their beloved golus nations, I GUARANTEE THIS. You want to turn a blind eye to God's warnings, don't expect pity or mercy when the fleecing begins. Your time is running out. You spoiled brats. Come in force and change Israel, have an impact you spineless pathetic golus Jews.
24. #6 first of all, you are from Norway
Israeli ,   Haifa   (07.17.13)
You have no clue what is about to take place. You have no clue that history is about to repeat itself. ALL Jews, ALL need to come to Israel soon and fast, before its too late.
25. Diaspora Jews essential to israel survival
ScottB ,   Boston   (07.17.13)
In the face of unrelenting western hostility to Israel, who could doubt the fundamental importance of U.S. support--military, economic, and diplomatic--to Israel's safety and prosperity? Try to imagine that support without leadership of American Jews? It would have been nice for someone other than a Profressive Israeli rabbi to have authored these sentiments.
26. #1 I TOTALLY agree with you.
Israeli ,   Haifa   (07.17.13)
27. Reform, Liberal and Progressive
Danny ,   London England   (07.17.13)
We see Liberal, Reform and Progressive Jewish groups demanding equal rights [rites?] at the Western Wall Plaza. According to Reform Rabbi Solomon Freehof, Reform does not accept the distinction between Cohanim, Levites and ordinary Jews. The Western Wall is the remains of the Temple where male Cohanim performed the Avodah and male Levites formed the choir and orchestra. Reform also does not believe in the Avodah or sacrificial service of the Temple of which the Western Wall is the remnant. Reform rejects the laws of purification required to ascend the Temple Mount, as it rejects rituals in general. Reform rejects the distinction between males and females, begging the question 'Will there be female Cohanim performng the Avodah and females in the Levitical choir and orchestra in the Third Temple?' Is Reform dealing with Moshiachzeit, or the zeitgeist of the 19th Century Diaspora?
28. Reform and Medinas Yisrael
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (07.17.13)
Reform are 100% free to build their temples, schools, seminaries in Israel, although conversions, marriages and Gitten must be overseen by the Chief Rabbinate, to avoid problems such as mamzerus. The reality is that few native Israelis are attracted to reform, a German movement that rejected the Return to Israel, the Hebrew language, Moshiach ben David, the Third Temple with the sacrificial cult, and Ritual Laws as opposed to moral laws. Why would this attract native Israelis who have no need to adjust their Judaism to suit 19th Century Protestants? Reform has never had a foothold in Israel whether or not there has been a Medinah.
29. Why do we need another cult?
(07.17.13)
Why Reform would attract Jews here who have no need to adjust their Judaism to suit 18th Century Protestants?
30. Diaspora Jews are AREADY LOST....
Sonya ,   Israel   (07.17.13)
Let them fix themselves.
