Erdogan is making same mistake that morsi made. he thinks that elections are all that are necessary for democracy. he does not recognize the rights of the press to report the truth or the rights of Turks and others who do not agree with his policies, As for defamation, his cause is a non starter and he obviously does not understand freedom of dissent or a free press.

"a prime minister who was elected by receiving 50% of the vote a dictator." Just like Morsi. Who barely got 50% after padding the numbers with voter intimidation and fraud. Something very familiar to Erdogan too. Thankfully the Egyptian military took action before Morsi arrested the seculars in the army like Erdogan did. As for threatening to sue the newspaper, that sounds like something a crazy cult like Scientology (or CAIR) would do -- both they and Erdogan think they can get their way with intimidation and silencing critics.
