1. She should have just moved to the back
Dror ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.31.13)
Women who dress in an imodest and provocative manner should sit at the back off the bus , its a discrase that they should dress like this in the holly land and then are expected that people attack them.
2. Afghanistan
Michael ,   Haifa   (07.31.13)
If, once again, these thugs escape a prison sentence, then the rule of law here is as ridiculous as in Afghanistan.
3. Respect and decency
Sarah B. ,   Israel/U.S.A   (07.31.13)
Israel has some sensitive areas where people HAVE to know how to behave. Don't pretend to leave Mea Shearim, Beit Shemesh or Bnei Brak unharmed if you enter there with hostile or provocative attitude. Women must know their place in these areas. If you find a Haredin student in the bus, why not look for a place in the back of the bus? Why not avoid conflict? Haredim is an important contingent in Israeli society and they must be respected.
4. to #1
Aviva ,   Bet Shemesh   (07.31.13)
who said the woman on the bus was dressed immodestly
5. Dror , there are LAWS in Israel
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.31.13)
Everyone is free to sit where she/he wants in buses . The sole exeption are the reserved places for invalids . A bus is not a religious place , nor is this bus owned by charedi people . They have to show respect to others if they wanted to be respected . Women are free to wear light clothes and do it in this weather
6. @1
Robert ,   Romania   (07.31.13)
Seriously? And why should "immodest" women move to the back of the bus while some random men wearing the clothes of 18th century Russia be allowed to stay in front.
7. Zombie Attacks..
Jenny ,   NY USA   (07.31.13)
OMG! Its just like those movies where zombies attack "uninfected" people! Frightening. What will society do? Give in the the masses of cult-like zombies...?! Where are the leaders and politicians? The rabbis? Who "leads" these people..?!?!
8. egged should stop
Ilana   (07.31.13)
...theirservice to areas where such incidents occur. Shatter the bus=no bus
9. Haredi OFF the bus!
BUILD BABY BUILD !!! ,   United States   (07.31.13)
I, for one, insist that the Haredi either walk or, ride mules. If they think so little of women, and their women agree as to their diminished status, from that of a 'help mate' to a lesser status of say, a mule, if the cart fits, pull it. Enough of this, prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. Imagine that Golda Meir was a passenger that day. OY! Not to mention the publicity that brings ridicule and embarrassment to the state of Israel and her Jewish, Christian, Muslim, (etc. ALL religions) represented in Israel. OFF the bus or, under it, or attach a U - Haul for the obnoxious Haredi, you choose. Not them. Oh, and charge them treble damages for violent conduct and damaging public property. Criminal behavior wont be tolerated in Israel.
10. Ask Haredi to dress like us in Tel Aviv
Jonatan ,   Tel Aviv   (07.31.13)
If they want us to dress like them in their cities, then we should ask the same in ours. They can live as they want as long as they don't impose their way of live to us.
11. #8 Jerusalem too?
Gabor ,   Budapest, Hungary   (07.31.13)
The answer is definitely not to stop the service but to inforce law, which Israel is unable to do. The dream about the jewish homeland is falling apart. Israel is not supposed to be like this, but a safe haven for jews where we can live in peace and security with hopes and dreams.
12. #3 Because Israel is supposed to be a free country
Gabor ,   Budapest, Hungary   (07.31.13)
I'm starting to wonder if Israel will exist in 50 years. No matter how strong your airforce is and how advanced your tanks if you are rotting from the inside.
13. No Excuses
Nigel ,   London   (07.31.13)
I am a regular and constant advocate for Israel, spending many hours each week defending the country's reputation and standing in an ever increasingly hostile UK.. I also visit regularly and know many Israelis who are respectful, professional , law abiding and polite. I am not overly religious but am comfortable going to Chabad services and spent two years at a religious school In Israel. It is with a great deal of frustration and embarrassment that i read stories about intolerance and bigotry on both sides of the Haredi/secular . This HAS TO STOP. One of the reasons I love Israel is its tolerance for religion and diversity. People should feel free as free to walk along Tel Aviv promenade in their Tallit as in Jerusalem immodestly dressed. There are enough people in the world who pour scorn on Jews and Israel without this kind of intolerance. Just remember, the Nazis did not differentiate between secular and orthodox. Nor should we. So, a message to Haredim reading this- I respect your rights to practice the religion as you see fit. Please respect others rights equally. we need to stick together not fall apart. Antyhing else both mitigates the work people like me do and will lead to us stopping.
14. The Torah explicitly condemns violence
Scott ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (07.31.13)
especially against fellow Jews. These people claim to live by the Torah, but they are actually they are doing the opposite. There is no excuse for attacking a busload full people or using violence. There are non-violent ways of protesting.
15. Dear Sarah
Non Jewish Immigrant   (07.31.13)
As a layer you should know that the law is the same everywhere on a national territory. No exceptions! Bet Shemesh, Mea Shearim and Bnei Brak are in Israel, therefore their citizens are subjected to the same laws!
16. No exceptions
Loyal Jew ,   Land of Israel   (07.31.13)
Men and others cannot be mixed anywhere, no matter how they are dressed, modestly, 18th century, whatever. It is against the Torah and the rabbis.
17. 1-3 The issue is not...
robert ,   antwerp belgium   (07.31.13)
wether the women are dressed provocatively or not. The issue is wether it is breaking the law when men force women to sit in the back on busses belonging to a public busline from the state of Israƫl. If haredim want segregated busses, they should buy their own busses.
18. Let it be known to all
Sagi   (07.31.13)
I have put out a complete herem on these people, for me they do not exist. Pulsa denura. No woman, however "immodestly" garbed, offends me. On the other hand these folk in their ridiculous outfits offend me deeply, I am ashamed that they wish to call themselves Jews and live in Israel, they are not of my people, they are strangers and misfits. I have, in the past, and will continue to do so, refuse to sit beside one of them on a plane, train or bus. I have even got up from my seat and moved to another when one sits beside me. I refuse to have anything to do with them, they are an affront to all normal human beings and do not understand the concept of human dignity.
19. Beit Shemesh
Clive ,   London   (07.31.13)
This is not a difficult problem to solve 1, Any Haredi causing problem in this way should not be allowed on to the bus. 2, If problem persists, then Egged should ban them altogether and suggest they organise their own bus route. 3, Any damage done to the bus must be paid for in full by the criminal who caused it. If he/they cannot pay, then the court must impose a jail term instead. Finally, once they understand that a 'Zero tolerance' policy is to be employed by the police/courts, regarding this behaviour..it will stop overnight.
20. Haradim
zvi ,   Bat Yam   (07.31.13)
To all the Hara-dim : If it was not for the SECULAR pioneers of the 19 Century who build this country with hard work this country would not exist and you the orthodox would not be here either
21. BUS
Marian ,   Romania   (07.31.13)
''some random men wearing the clothes of 18th century Russia'' cannot provoke erection to Haredim in buses
22. Haredi thuggery
ZZNHL   (07.31.13)
The Haredi Rabbis are so removed from reality that they don't realize that by condoning these acts, by their silence in not condemning them, they are creating an environment that will cause a huge backlash against the Haredi minority in Israel.
23. response to She should have just moved to the back
Rachel Stern ,   Hashmonaim, Israel   (07.31.13)
Sarah, why should I be the one to "avoid conflict". When a Haredi person enters the bus and sees a woman sitting in the front HE should walk to the back. Or better yet, get off the damn bus.
24. Sara respect works both ways
Mike true Israeli ,   Israel   (07.31.13)
teach your haridie friends that and some basic human dignity
25. #1 Dror
Lazerbenabba ,   London, England   (07.31.13)
Judging by your comments ,you are an adherent of this abhorent behaviour by the Haredi; and the fact that your mentality and brain remain in the dark ages I shall excuse your poor English.
26. #Sarah B
Lazerbenabba ,   London, England   (07.31.13)
Sarah I have to say that I believe that your common sense has left you; by your reasoning anyone confronting you in an antagonistic manner then run away. 6 million of us did that and where did it get us. I suggest to you that the Haredi are always confrontational because of their insane beliefs and intolerance of others. Do the seculars ask the Haredi to respect there liberal mores as a mark of respect when they leave their ghetto to travel in the rest of Israel? Why should the majority segment of Israeli population find it necessary to accommodate such appalling behaviour.
27. ashamed
Rina ,   Beit Shemesh   (07.31.13)
Today I am ashamed to say that I live in Beit Shemesh or in a "chareidi" area. When supposedly "G-d fearing" Jews act like animals it makes me question what "chareidi" is supposed to mean. I can't imagine you mean trembling in fear before shamayim. to #16. Is it encouraged by the Torah and the Rabbis to terrorize innocent fellow Jews and to destroy Jewish property? Can you trample 99% of the Torah and feel self-righteous because you keep selective chumrot? How can we try to convince the world that we are different than our enemies when a small proportion of those that they would call "us" (are you really?) act just like our enemies? Are those of us that rely on Egged bus between BS and J-m to live in fear from now on? because of "Torah learners"?. What a disgrace to the Torah..
28. Time for separation
JAS ,   UK   (07.31.13)
Livni should make peace talks with the Palestinians conditional on their accepting the Charedim as part of the package. We give them Jerusalem with its population plus the transferred Charedim from the rest of the country. Solves so many problems. Let the Charedim and Taliban work together to keep women at the back of the bus (or more likely chained to the kitchen sink).
29. Response to She should have just moved to the back
Rachel Stern ,   Hashmonaim, Israel   (07.31.13)
Should we ATTACK you for being overdressed in extremely hot weather??
30. time machine
scientist   (07.31.13)
...and you should build a time machine and transport yourself to the middle ages where your mind belongs.
