1. Yes this is the end of Meretz
Mordechai   (08.01.13)
What she really means it is the end of her party Meretz which will need to merge with an Arab party. She never had problems with banning parties she disagreed with from running for the Knesset even if the voters would give them 25 seats. But its a violation of democracy to raise the threshold to require a party to get a minimum of 4 seats. But thats what the left is about manipulate the system so they win.
2. read and remember

"Any agreement to have Israel transfer sovereign lands will require a referendum." That does not apply to the West Bank or Gaza. These areas are not "sovereign lands" of Israel and are not subject to domestic Israeli law. International law prevails.
3. Oh stop whining.
jrebecca ,   modiin   (08.01.13)
This bill is meant to make this country run more smoothly, by people who are interested in more than just their tiny empires within. Get valid or get out.
4. Gal-On: Governance bill aims to silence ideological parties
jeremy ,   hula valley   (08.01.13)
Poor Gal-On, she is finally seeing the writing on the wall, the end of Meretz the waisted left wing party that no one really votes for. It's not to silence anyone, it's to make a government run better, without funding all these little parties. That make it hard to even form a strong central government without making deals of one sort or the other. By by Meretz, go join the Arab block or Labor but either way we don't need you
5. #2 half right
(08.01.13)
You are right that Netanyahu will surrender Judea and Samaria to the PLO without a referendum, but international law is that these territories are Israeli.
6. what is missing
israel israeli ,   tel aviv   (08.01.13)
We all remember how Rabin bought MK Goldfarb (and two more) for cash to ratify Oslo II, or how Sharon discarded the Likud and bought some corrupt MKs to ratify the ethnic cleansing of Gush Katif. Thanks to the personal corruption of some MKs, many Israelis have already died and many more will die. To make Israel a democracy, this law must force MKs to follow the platform on which they were elected and prohibit MKs from selling their votes.
7. this bill will bring more democracy to Israel
zionist forever   (08.01.13)
The way the current system works a party only need to achieve 2% electoral and we have more parties than we know what to do with and the more parties we have the further the vote is split and the bigger coalitions you need and coalition government in itself only borders on democracy. As things stand its the little parties like Meretz, Shas & Livni who hold the real power when in the government because its their support any government needs to survive and if they don't get their own way they pull out and force an election. Raise the electoral threshold so you can weed out some of the deadwood. Whilst Meretz might suffer the real winners will actually be the left & arabs. If Meretz was forced to merge with Labor because they are now just to small to survive then Labor would now have 21 seats making them the second largest party in the Knesset. Arabs never vote for the right wing and if the arab parties were unable to survive arab voters would probably vote Labor which would mean more arabs being made Labor MKS giving the arbs a louder voice and the increased support for Labor would increase its chances of getting elected and more often. This bill that will probably end up giving the left more power but as Gal-On and Meretz are trying to save their own skin she shouts undemocratic. The only undemocratic thing is we have not got rid of the coalition system where we vote for parties and not individuals. This move is still window dressing but its better than leaving things at a measly 2% threshold.
