The ukrainian troops in question served in 14th Waffen SS division. It was called Galizien by the Germans in an attempt to somehow classify these guys in a category different from "untermenschen" ((subhumans) which Ukrainians and Slavs in general belonged to, according to the Nazi theory. In fact, in the beginning it was strictly forbidden to refer to the division as Ukrainian. Needless to say, this division was staffed with true Ukrainian patriots. Up until 1943 their partiotic duty, for the most part, consisted of helping Nazis ethnically cleanse Ukraine from Jews and Poles. After stalingrad the Nazis needed all the cannon fodder they could get, so they thre the 14th Waffen SS division into action. Fighting the Soviet Army turned out to be quite a bit more challenging than massacring civilians, and the division was practically obliterated in short order. Germans put together the pathetic leftovers, re-staffed with Nazi sympathizers from all over Europe and used them against partisans in Slovakia and Slovenia. It goes without saying that it was the duty of every self-respecting Ukrainian patriot to help Hitler fight Slovakian and Slovenian partisan. Then their patriotic duty morphed into fighting against soviet army in Austria, with ultimately predictable result. It saddens me greatly that people don't know the history of World War II ...

I don't condone atrocities or any violence but if there's any nation in Europe that have a neighbors like Ukraine it earned a right to be pissed off big time - I don't blame any nation that was invaded and subdued by Soviets and took a chance siding with Nazis ,... A few of them like Crimean Tatars or Cossacks if it wasn't for WWII they would be a history today ,...
