1. Banish Seniority in the IDF!
Former Soldier ,   NY   (08.06.13)
Having served in Gaza, I fully understand the implications that seniority complexes have on the professionalism of the IDF. The "senior" soldiers in my battalion were exempt from cleanup and kitchen duty...and basically watched TV and slept all day (when they finished their patrol). This led to an extremely uneven balance of duties, and resulted in a truly dangerous scenario. Us "younger" soldiers suffered the consequences of this idiotic primitive custom, and as a result could not perform adequately. Physically and mentally drained, we frequently fell asleep on patrols in GAZA!!!! It is an outrage that stupidity dictates the professionalism of the IDF. Throw these soldiers in prison and banish this ridiculous custom. This isn't college, it's the army.

3. Tough to take privileges away, isn't it?

It seems puzzling that soldiers would feel entitled to "protest" orders, let alone abandon their posts and feel they can negotiate their duties. On the other hand, using a pecking order seems like it could only result in hazing practices and a pecking order that could not possibly be respected.
4. Hazing and Seniority
ex Golani 1973   (08.07.13)
Court Martial them. First for abondoning a position give the idiots ten years in jail. For bringing the Golani Brigade into disrrpute give them another ten years in jail. For bringing the IDFinto disrepute antother ten years jail. For behaving like total arseholes and abusing fellow comrades in arms be they younger or not. Hang the them. About time this modern trend of "oh I am a vatik and I don't have to do duties such as cleaning etc" is stamped out once and for all. Back in the days when soldiers were soldiers and not spoilt F***king Brats you got on with the job and shared the burden of duties. is it any wonder that the enemy are laughing at the modern IDF......?
5. The 1970s Armored Corps...

Had none of this garbage. General Yisrael Tal and his subordinates worked like slaves during the second half of the 1960s to banish this BS from Shiryon. Any soldier that tried to pull the "senior soldier" crap or any kind of hazing got 30 days in Keleh 6 and reduced in rank to private. The pampered darlings of today have to understand that whatever else it is, no army is a democracy. If you don't like your barracks, the way your officer treats you or the conditions of service, there are channels to make yourself heard without disobeying orders. Abandoning a post on the border? 6 months in Keleh 4 (with no time off for good behavior), loss of all rank and privileges and the six months doesn't count as army service time. Air conditioning? We would have killed to have fans and the electricity to operate them... Grow up, children, you're supposed to be our heirs... victors of the 6-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. Act like men, not spoiled children!
6. This does happen in a professional military
Dan ,   Los Angeles   (08.07.13)
IDF compulsory service produces low rating soldiers and there are many reasons for it, some are correctable and others are not. This is not an isolated incident and the fact that the IDF is unable to stem this behavior should concern anyone who depends on its ability to defend and deter. This is actually an easy one to correct but the real question is; do the IDF planners see it as a major issue? I cannot recall this type of irresponsible behavior in the late sixties in the tank corps and particularly inפלס"ר 643 where I started my service.
7. Air-conditioning, cell-phones, berets, 2006 ...
Andy ,   Manchester, UK   (08.07.13)
45° ? Dear me...just remember Gidi, Tasa, the Bar Lev line ? That was considered as moderate heat there. No air-conditioning in the bunkers though, just fans, whenever there was one. Like the other side. And thank God we put up with it, otherwise these boys wouldn't have to serve in Zahal at all now: they wouldn't have been born. And they wouldn't be wearing their pretty beret in that ugly laughable split-into-two manner which has become the hallmark of Zahal, and is derided the world over as the sign of an undisciplined army. 2006 was the wake-up call. WAKE UP !
