1. Discrimination & how to tackle it
Maurice Solovitz ,   London England   (08.18.13)
If the allegations are proven correct then shut em down and the school students can be integrated (bussed) into secular schools. That will solve a number of problems - for a start, if they are truly arrogant and prejudiced they can fund themselves which means they will need to be earning a lot more money than many currently earn. And also...Tax any donations that are made in support of racist schools - it will be even more of an incentive for them to be shut down!
2. self respect
Ethan Schwartz ,   Eilat   (08.18.13)
Why would anyone want to send their children to a place that degraded their culture. they will just wind up with more confused oriental jews with ashkenazi education.
3. Discrimination against Arab pupils
Size10Feet ,   Taibe Israel   (08.18.13)
This is a bit rich coming from a society which practices apartheid against Arab pupils? Let see how the Israel Jewish secular would react to having Arab students in their classrooms. They would argue that the Arab students would be best served with their own schools geared to their own culture in which they can perform better academically right? Separate but equal right? What about girl only schools? Hasn't it been shown that girls do better academically in girl only schools? So why isn't that called discrimination? So one size fits all education is the way to go right?
4. If the criterion was race, there would
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (08.18.13)
not be Sefarad girls in the class of my grand-children. Many Ashkenazi girls are refused too, because they do not full fill all the conditions to be accepted.
5. Be careful what you ask for.
Roberto ,   Canada   (08.18.13)
You know it's funny that you should say that you resent Jews going to Jewish schools, and Arabs go to Arab schools. I know I would prefer, Arabs going to Israeli schools, learning English and Hebrew, maybe even Spanish but no Arabic. Learning that Ben Gurion was a great leader, and fierce protector of Israel. That Israel gave great opportunities for all it's citizens through education, health and social services. That all students learn and celebrate Jewish holidays only. That they learn the Hebrew bible during religious class, and so on. Yes I am sure you would really want Arabs to have the same education as Jews open to all, a public Israeli education. At the same time you would close all publically supported Arab schools that teach two styles of Arabic, teach an alternative history that Israel created a disaster upon the Arab population. That Arab -Israelis true co-nationals don't even speak Hebrew. Yes I totally agree with you.
6. Segregated education creates racist society, "Jewish State"
Steven Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN   (08.18.13)

A better question: Why would any self-respecting Jewish government fund a school that degrades other Jews based on their skin tone?

observer13 ,   Toronto   (08.18.13)
Ora; Are you a real person or a committee of rabbis who sit all day, looking for wrongs committed by the haredim (as easy to find as looking for water in the sea), and then trying to justify them.
12. Why go to a religious seminary?
Mark ,   London, UK   (08.18.13)
I thought these places had a rubbish education system that ill prepared young people for life as adults. I also thought jews were supposed to obey the law of the land. Does that not apply for haredi in Israel?

Skin tone is not an issue here. If you were to live in a Jewish community you would see that Jews of all backgrounds have every shade of skin. I see no reason to put the Ashkenazi culture at a different level to that of the Oriental culture. These religious school exist to teach about culture, the reality is that the cultures are not taught equally at the mixed schools and that minority pupils in a religious school are taught that their culture is inferior.
15. #14: You make an incredible statement, as follows:
Runner1983 ,   USA   (08.19.13)
"...these religious school exist to teach about culture, the reality is that the cultures are not taught equally at the mixed schools and that minority pupils in a religious school are taught that their culture is inferior." In these "religious schools" if you can call them that, are minority pupils really taught that their culture is inferior? My G_d, what has become of Israel? You have degenerated to the worst kind of racism. I am ashamed to refer to you as fellow Jews!
16. Kol Hakavod to Shai Peron
R ,   Israel   (08.19.13)
Finally someone who does more than just talk.
17. Failed attempt
(08.19.13)
Discrimination? Among Israeli society? Really? The attempt to build a cohesive Israeli society has failed miserably!
18. #3 Get the facts
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (08.19.13)
The Israeli secular students do share classrooms with Arabs. I teach at a college and 1/3 of my students are Arab. My daughter couldn't get a place in the Hebrew U dorms because they were reserved for Arab students. I've also studied with Arabs at Haifa U, Tel Aviv U and Gordon. As such I've been very privileged to share and witness dialogue between the religious, Arab and secular population. Unfortunately there were no newspapers present to take pictures.
19. Rav Elyashiv ztl
Joseph ,   London England   (08.19.13)
The late Gaon and Posek HaDor, Rav Elyashiv condemned discrimination and said principals who discriminate have to be replaced. This appeared in print in Yated and was his official view as a Posek.
20. Since when are...
David ,   Netanya   (08.19.13)
Sephardic people the same as Mizrahi (Arab Jews) people ? When is Israel going to stop insulting Jewish people from Spain, Italy and Portugal by putting us on the same page as the Mizrahi (Arab Jews). Our culture is so different. You can't even compare it.
21. 19 Kol ha-kavod to R. Elyashiv on this poseiq
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   netzarim.co.il   (08.19.13)
However, we obviously need a LOT more rabbis to step out of the Dark Ages into the Light.
22. 20-Adot ha-Mizrakh, not Sepharadim, who are the insulted
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   netzarim.co.il   (08.19.13)
Historians document that it's Adot ha-Mizrakh, particularly Teimanim and Bavlim, who are the most pristine ancestors of MIDDLE EAST -- NOT EUROPEAN SPAIN -- Israel! Neither Eastern European (Ashkenazim) nor Western European (Sepharadim) are without significant European -- foreign -- assimilation and acculturation.

Ralph ,   Rishon   (08.19.13)
If you got yourself up and came to Israel you would see that the Arab students learn Hebrew and English. The Jewish students are supposed to learn Arabic, but most schools don't bother teaching one of the official languages of the country. The rest of your reply is not even worth commenting on.
24. Reply to number 20 Sephardi versus Mizrachi
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (08.19.13)
The confusion may come from the Diaspora, where Mizrachi Jews were religious Zionists, just as Palestinians meant Jews dedicated to rebuilding the Holy Land. We saw the two main nusachim as Ashkenaz and Sepharad. There is similar confusion with words like 'Conservative' meaning a UK political party or an American name for Massorti Judaism.
25. Ora , If there are complaints
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.19.13)
there MUST be discrimination , and i'm sure that there is . Maybe not only in what you call "schools" , but in those "schools" it's a bigger problem seen the complaints . If you want to defend your "institutions" do it in a smart way , now your "defense" brings results contrary on what you hoped .
26. 24 , completely wrong
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.19.13)
regarding mizrachim , sepharadim , palestinians ; and your comparison [ conservatives ] makes no sense either .
27. sephardi community needs to rise their own standards
yadeed ,   Israel   (08.19.13)
why sephardi girls and parents will chose an ashkenazi school for their girls? You do not see many ashkenazi fighting to send their kids to sephardi schools. Are they not discriminating their own sephardi heritage? The sephardi community needs to rise their own standards and own mental attitudes.
28. We need to end subsidies to religious education
Avner ,   Tel Aviv   (08.20.13)
In 21st world, religious education should have no place. We need girls to be educated in science, languages, maths and business.
29. Charles 26
Akiva ,   NYC   (08.20.13)
All of those definitions in 24 are true for the USA and UK
30. Beth Jacob Schools
Joseph ,   London England   (08.20.13)
Our main Beth Jacob School accepted most observant girls who applied, including many Sephardim. Everyone was completely integrated, but many Sephardi parents complained that the Jewish studies program was completely Ashkenazic. The clases were then reorganised to have parallel Ashkenazim and Sephardim [Here in London Sephardim includes what Israelis call Mizrachim] Things were going well until a govt inspector accused the school of ethnic segregation, and the two groups had to be mixed again, in spite of what the parents wanted!
