The most exercise these guys have done is walk up the street in NY to pick up fresh bagels. I witnessed this myself when I served.

Cardiac anomalies are often the cause of such problems and to those who have no idea what I'm talking about, see articles in the US press about the sudden collapse of athletes.

Israel's soldiers do very well in whatever battle situation they find themselves. And I think you'll find that there are plenty of night exercises and exercises under extreme conditions. This was running practice and sunrise -8pm is plenty of time to practixe running, thank you.

It makes me mad, that a nahal soldier is made to run beyond what he is used to, and it should be very obvious that he wouldn't have wanted to object to what he was told using his better judgement of his overall feeling or state of health, due to social embarrasement, and it is up the army trainers to be very sensitive to all this. Honestly! this is SO maddening! People are so shallow and narrow minded not to be alert to this possibility. A Nahal soldier who is ultra orthodox, has not had a life of physical conditioning prior to this, and his physicality is based on his natural bone structure and body build alone, but not on past experience with prolonged physical exploit.
8. Prior preperation for army service.

From my own experience of pre military training. Many new conscripts have not had adequate pre army training. When they are not in the right physical condition they can not participate in vigorous physical training in the army. Every kind of sport training activities must be done slowly, and in stages. The army simply does not have the time to train people in stages. Which means that all new recruits should begin slowly to build up their physical skills at least six months before they enlist into the armed forces preferable after being properly examined by a Doctor who specializes in sports.
