Regarding the encirclement of the Egyptian army and the battle of Chinese Farm and the main crossing of Suez Canal, I concede you are right. These did occur after the first 8 days of the Yom Kippur War, and so it was not correct for me to say that war was essentially won by the 8th day. However, I do think that the outcome of the war was not in doubt by that point, because both the Egyptians and Syrian offensives had been turned back by that point and the IDF was already making significant gains beyond the ceasefire lines that had existed prior to the beginning of that war. The Wikipedia article on the Yom Kippur War states that by Oct. 14, " the IDF had advanced deep into Syria and was mounting a largely successful invasion of the Egyptian mainland from the Sinai, but had taken severe material losses. According to Abraham Rabinovich, "while the American airlift of supplies did not immediately replace Israel's losses in equipment, it did allow Israel to expend what it did have more freely"." The fact remains, however, that it was American pressure that forced Israel to take the first hit from the Egyptian/Syrian invasion, which was supported by the Soviets throughout the war, while Israel did not receive American support until the 8th day. The fact also remains that Kissinger's "shuttle diplomacy" blunted Israel's victory on the battlefield by handing the Arabs a significant victory on the diplomatic front.

What Nixon said and did are two different stories....As #39, Laila so correctly stated...No one helped Israel more during the Yom Kippur War then RM Nixon. He sent huge amounts of war material to Israel; including the brand new TOW Missile Jeeps, aircraft, tanks, and ammunition. He acted as the finger of G-d to save Israel from the Arab onslaught. Without his help, the war would have had a much graver outcome for us. So, perhaps he was not perfect...but his actions certainly contradicted his anti Jewish diatribes. Who was it that convinced Golda to stand down in 73'? Despite several clear intel warnings and alerts she stood down, why?
