Arrow debut? Hope not. Not that I don't have confidence in the Arrow.

After a short lived advance by the Syrians into the Golan, within a few days the IDF were at the outskirts of Damascus. This hardly represents a success for Syria or their Russia equipment . From Nasser onwards Arab leaders have issued exaggerated claims of their military prowess . Of course the above does not suggest that Israel faces no serious threat, but arab bluster and rhetoric has a history of being rather OTT
4. Surprise
Albrecht Klein ,   Germany   (08.28.13)
Syria being seriously kicked in the bottom isn't a surprise.
5. The only "surprise" Syrian created in 1973...
William ,   Israel   (08.28.13)
was attacking the Jewish nation on their holiest day in the year as most of the population were fasting and praying. Yes, Assad, Syria surprised the world in its level of depravity. How did that turn out for you? Surprise!
6. #2 - all Assad said was they surprised IDF by attacking....
William ,   Israel   (08.28.13)
not by winning.
7. it's getting scary......
les ,   canada   (08.28.13)
did'nt i hear that song before? "the graveyard of the enemy" at the gates of bagdad....oh...you really showed israel in '73. the only reason they didn't march in to damascus, because they did not want to. and the syrian army can not defeat a rag tag few thousand "rebels", what chance they have against israel???
8. The only surprise,
David ,   Montreal,Canada   (08.28.13)
which might not be the one; is to see the Syrian army remooving their boots to flee faster.
9. This is all about Iran.

10. Assad the Standup Comic....
Koose E Mack ,   NY USA   (08.28.13)
ASSad your memory must be defective. The IDF was almost at the gates of Damascus in 1973. If the USSR didn't threaten intervention... and stop the war, Damascus would have been a city in Israel.
11. Syria didn't surprise Israel Golda just didn't listen
Zionist forever   (08.28.13)
The individual most to blame for the initial losses in 1973 was not Nasser or Assad it was Golda. Military intelligence of course the Arabs were on a war footing even if they didn't know the exact date. King Hussain secretly flew to Israel and told Golda face-face that Nasser had askd him to join him and Assad but the woman didn't listen. She even refused military advise to take a preemptive strike because she wanted the world to see Israel as the victim so we had to wait and let the Arabs fire the first shot. She was an idiot who worried more about what the rest of the world thought rather what is in Israel's best interest.
12. Who owns the Golan today? 'nuf said!
david ,   hartford USA   (08.28.13)
Assad is a pimple on the ass of humanity. Time to have it removed, for good. Also, for those who aren't familiar with President Obama's mantra, "We don't want a regime change," let me translate precisely what he means: "We will have a regime change!" If Assad is in Syria, his hours are numbered. If he's fled to Iran (like the coward all dictators are), he can stay there until some relative of a Syrian murdered by Assad's goons sticks a knife in his heart. Then the Assad story will finally be over.

Didn't the Syrians lose that war badly? So we can assume that Assad wants another loss.

15. Assad - I remember the surprise in 1973
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (08.28.13)
It lasted all of 24 hours. After that the Syrian Army retreated until the UN saved them for a 3rd time (1948 and 1967) . If you expect to surprise anybody it better last more than 24 hours
16. Why Use This As Example?
Christy ,   Boston, US   (08.28.13)
They didn't win the war. Don't understand how this is an example of what their military can do. I want the US to stay out of any military involvement in Syria.

Their Air force was totally destroyed. maybe Mr. Assad is too young to remember. Meanwhile him and his family are in Tehran. LOL
20. Does he mean IDF will be closer than 40 km from Damascus?

Nice knowing you :) BYE BYE
22. The Arab enemy will always bluster..its our job
Al   (08.28.13)
to keep our ammo dry and ready. May God in his infinite wisdom protect our dear soldiers. To the IDF..I wish you much success in securing the Jewish State of Israel. Israel represents the home of the Jewish people. On a personal note, I pray for my son's (Capt E) well being. Very tough days are ahead. For those who care for Israel I respectfully suggest that we all pray in our own way for her well being.
23. Yes, well.....
Gabriel ,   Leiden, Netherlands   (08.28.13)
The Syrians did indeed surprise Israel, I believe. But if my history serves me straight, Israel mobilized with lightning speed, which was not a real logistical challenge as much of the country was in Shul. I am not going to say that Golda Meir didn't seriously blunder in disregarding the warnings beforehand, but as I recall Israel won that particular war. But we all know that Assad doesn't expect to be taken seriously in the West. He wants to convince the Arab street wo seem to honestly believe they won the war. In addition to Damascus, Cairo was within immediate striking distance of IDF ground troops as well before they got their asses saved, by the UN. I had a discussion once with an Arab student from Marocco here in Leiden, who regularly boasted about -quote -''our'' (!) victory over Israel. No amount of facts, reasoning could dissuade her from that notion almost as if her whole identity was infused in this non-existing feat of arms. No-one took her seriously anymore afterwards. I suggest Israelis laugh this one off as well, but keep reminding Assad about dire consequences should he launch even one firecracker southwards. Not to say that I think the impending Western attack isn't a sheer excercise in folly. If there is even one chance that it might benefit Al-quaida, the West should keep its planes safely aground. Assad isn't a useful neighbour (to say the least)and yes, he's in leaque with Iran, but is Israel really rooting for Al-Qaida to be in charge of the other side of the Golan border? It might just happen. If the World's 1.6 Billion Muslims remain intend on dispatching one another, there is little we can do in the longrun anyway.
24. In '73 Israel was closer to Damascus than it had ever been!

25. #22 AL- We pray for your son
Moshe ,   Haifa   (08.28.13)
Your son is amongst the best trained military and soldiers in the world. Yet we still pray for his safety.
26. like in 73 we'll be surprised there's no one to fight back!
Jeremy ,   TLV   (08.28.13)
27. #23 Gabriel
(08.28.13)
"is Israel really rooting for Al-Qaida to be in charge of the other side of the Golan border?" Even worse: Al-Quaeda with Assad's chemical weapons! Assad is a tyrant, no doubt, but a predictable one, because he's only interested in manifesting his power. Al-Quaeda on the contrary are crazy, they wouldn't have any problems shooting WMDs at Israel. They don't care about retaliation, they are fighting Jihad; death is what they're looking for.
28. #22 - Thank you to your son
LJH ,   Canada   (08.28.13)
for defending Israel. I hope in my heart he returns safely to his family.

30. Warning about a "surprise" attack... ah, yeah
Ze'ev ,   USA   (08.29.13)
"Hey bro, hope you like surprises 'cause we are thowing you a surprise party this Sunday!" is it really a cultural thing, or just too much inbreeding?
