2. Want to feel the equality?
Zev ,   Jerusalem   (09.03.13)
Try entering the Temple Mount as an observant Jew.
3. Jerusalem is a city of more than 3,000 years of age. Only
Jehudah Ben-Israel ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (09.03.13)
during 19 of those years Jerusalem, illegally, was divided: part of it was Israel's capital city and the rest conquered, against the law, by the Arabs. Now, that Jerusalem was again re-united some 46 years ago, Jerusalem is back to what it has always been, i.e. united under a single government.
4. Idea of dividing Israel is utterly obscene.
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.03.13)
The idea of dividing what remains of the sole tiny Homeland of the Jewish people is utterly obscene. Almost 80% of our Homeland is already occupied by Jordan. Every good Jew, patriotic Israeli and true friend of Israel must DEMAND the immediate end of all plans to divide Israel.

according the Bible, the word of God, He chose Sion in Jerusalem to be his dwelling place on earth. All promisses are for His chosen people the Jews. They last forever so Jerusalem cannot be divided. Shalom from Holland
6. So why some residents don't have access to citizenship?
Non Jewish immigrant ,   Haifa   (09.03.13)
That's what you call equality mr Barkat?
7. you want to divide a city you got 2 options both bad
zionist forever   (09.03.13)
You can have physical barriers all over the place like it was before 1967 but that will make life miserable for the residents and visitors will also make it impossible to do business. You can have an open city based on theoretical border but then you have no security. What is to stop a terrorist quite legally walking into Jerusalem on his side with a bomb then without being stopped go get a bus to Tel Aviv go kill a load of people. How do you stop smuggling because people can bring their drugs or whatever into the palestinians state and just take it into Israel no troubles. Then the drug dealer has access to two countries. We cannot stop illegal workers be they palestinians who just enter Israel via Jerusalem or foreigners. Another problem with a divided city is money. I assume that palestinians don't want to use shekel as their currency, they will want Arafats picture so this means that both their currency and the shekel must be possible to spend both currencies with equal ease. Result is traders are going to have to mark up all their products in two currencies and that means keeping track of exchange rates so they may have to regularly change their prices. I just hope Barkat always holds these views and doesn't do like the former mayor of Jerusalem Ehud Olmert wanted and that was to divide the city and share sovereignty of the Old City between Israel, palestinians, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
8. a question to the son of yaffa
zionist forever   (09.03.13)
Please remind me how many times Jerusalem is mentioned in the Koran? If Jerusalem is so holy why do you pray with your backs to it rather than facing it the way Jews do? Surely if the place is so holy then you would not turn your back on it to pray.

Anna ,   Montreal, Canada   (09.03.13)
Did you try to become a USA citizen, or Canadian, or Japanese? If you know you won't have an access to citizenship why immigrate to the state? The easiest way to become Israeli it is to convert to Judaism and to embrace Jewish heritage. If you don't like it- then you may decide to leave.

Watch 'The Gaekeepers', and absorb the comments about "dividing" Jerusalem. This tool to ignite the uninformed is just that.
11. Best way to avoid dividing the city
Zionist forever   (09.03.13)
Tell the Palestinians a condition of dividing the city is Mea Shearim must be on their side. The prospect of Mea Shearim becoming their responsibility will probably make them decide that dividing the city is not a good idea and it should stay a united city under full Israeli sovereignty.
12. Settlers
Lawyer Up! ,   Houston Tx.   (09.04.13)
If I was a settler encouraged and authorized to buy/live on land that the world does not recognize as belonging to your country, well....... I'd start suing all those government officials that said go ahead. Why should they keep their fortunes/bribes for breaking laws.......Sue Sue Sue!

Birdi ,   Israel   (09.04.13)
Nice one Anna, but if one does not believe in the Jewish religion with all ones heart, converting is a waste of time & effort. Post # 6 is either not 100% Jewish or he is talking about Muslims not being able to obtain Israeli citizenship.
14. is this the same Mayor who prevented Jerusalemites...
Jew ,   JewLandia (Israel)   (09.04.13)
living in East Jerusalem from having a story telling festival in Arabic? Is that how he believes the city is best unified? Its ok to have hundreds of events and festivals in West Jerusalem but no none in East Jerusalem? I think this mayor isn't a very good leader, he may be a good politician but definitely not a good leader!
15. Boycott Jerusalem
Michael ,   California, USA   (09.04.13)
I will never visit Jerusalem again until the lawlessness of the Haredim is curbed by the police and the courts. If Jerusalem is "one", then all of its citizens must live under fair and well enforced set of laws. There is a lot for you to accomplish, failing Mr. Mayor.
16. E J Pals were offered Israeli Citizenship
RickD ,   USA   (09.04.13)
East Jerusalem palestinians were offered Israeli citizenship and most or all refused it. The same people have blue Israeli ID cards and can move freely in Israel. According to polls the EJ Pals also prefer to live under Israeli sovereignty rather than the PA. The legitimacy of the Pal claim on EJ and West Bank is simply one of residency. They live there and they claim a right of self-determination. However, if it's true that Arabs in EJ don't wish to live under an Arab govt then this claimed right shouldn't apply to EJ. It is Arabs outside EJ that seem to be claiming a right to it.
17. #12. Judea and Samaria legally belong to Israel.
Chaim ,   Israel   (09.04.13)
All opposition to Israeli ownership of Judea and Samaria is politically motivated. It has absolutely nothing to do with international law. Countless world class international law lawyers have incontrovertibly proven Judea and Samaria belong to Israel. About 1,100 recently presented the E.U. with such proof. How irrefutable is Israeli ownership of Judea and Samaria? So irrefutable that even the P.A. refuses to debate it, as MK Danny Ayalon challenged them to.

19. Chaim , who were those 1100 ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.04.13)
What proof did they give ? I would like it if it was true . But what will you do with those living there , some since generations ?
20. redundant ....* yawn.....*

It's like this story has to be run every few months to test public opinion? Annex the west bank already!

I hate to burst your bubble but Jerusalem is & will always be part of Israel. If you want a "Palestine" you more than welcome to cross the Allenby Bridge & go to the "Palestinian" capital Amman.
