1. A Jewish ancestor five hundred years ago makes what?
Jo   (10.06.13)
After this ancestor the married Italian non Jews for generations, so it does not make them Jews today. I wish these organizations finding "lost" tribes or ancestry would understand that most people's are more than just one aspect of their ancestry......heck if you had an Indian ancestor 500 years ago would that make you Indian now? And if the majority of all ancestors where Italian but one? Logic and percentage says no. Many of these groups ignore their huge percentage of non Jewish ancestry - which is very much part of them and often has much more content- in favor of one Jewish ancestor that the pick as defining them ignoring the larger picture. Sad.
2. #1 Sad is ur tunnel-visioned racist focus on genetics
American-Israeli Jew ,   Israel   (10.06.13)
The brit makes the Jew. Everything else is Nazi-like racist "chosen" crap. And its far more Eastern-European "chosen" than historically "Jewish" Better keepers of the brit than racists!
3. Lost Tribes
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.06.13)
For how many generations did Jews try their best to look and behave like non-Jews? It's that much more amazing that today they are turning back and fulfilling the Prophetic vision of the lost tribes returning. Obviously they will need to undergo a formal conversion to clear any possibility of mamzerus in their geneology.
4. Re # 1 On Shine-through
Ariel ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim   (10.06.13)
B"H - Evidently Jo, if these people want to be Jews they'll have to go through full ("orthodox") conversion processes. However, there is a rather mysterious thing, called Shine-through, that allows, even makes people to connect to their ancient Jewish heritage: Fascinating!
5. So what makes you Jewish?
(10.06.13)
Jewish by blood? Jewish by heart? Jewish by belief? Jewish by religion? The Jewish Agency and the State of Israel have a clear definition of who's Jewish (Anyone who has a Jewish ancestor up to 2 generations). The Halacha says anyone whose mother is Jewish. Now, these groups claim that if you had a Jewish ancestor 500 years ago (20 generations) then you are probably Jewish too..... So, who's Jewish?
6. #5 If "the Halacha" says Esau (Edom) is Jewish
Historian ,   Israel   (10.06.13)
then that makes the Edomites and Amalek Jewish, as well as the Idumeans (variant spelling of Edomites), specifically King Herod and his grandson who killed a very famous Ribi who he feared threatened his claim to "King of the Jews"! There's more to it than merely having a Jewish mother, which assumes, from birth, that the child raised by a Jewish mother will revere the brit. But when the child abandons the brit, it becomes an Edomite, an Amalek and a King Herod. Shallow rabbinic minds have over-simplified the halacha to the extent of perverting it!
7. 6 Historian you'd better read the Bible again
Robert ,   Antwerp Belgium   (10.06.13)
Only the offspring of Jacob and their descendants together with converts belong to the Jewish people. The Jewish people as such came into being at mount Sinai wile receiving the Tora. So it excludes the children of Edom, Ismael and the many other children that Abraham had.
8. Number 1 '500 years ago'
Joseph ,   London England   (10.06.13)
You ask a good question. Where there have been large numbers of secret Jews in the same area they have tended to marry among themselves, just as some Palestinian clans admit they are Jewish in origin and only marry among their related clans of Jewish ancestry. Just to note, there were from time to time forced conversions in Islamic lands and therefore there are some Muslims of Jewish ancestry as well.
9. Number 6. 'shallow rabbinic minds'
Danny ,   London England   (10.06.13)
The question of matrilineal descent is in the Pentateuch. An Israelite woman was married to an Egyptian man and they had a son. He was declared Jewish, BUT did not belong to a Tribe because your Tribe goes according to your father, your Jewish identity according to your mother. The Pentateuch is pre-Rabbinic.
10. Try "moranos", not the PC "anusim"
Shy Guy ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.06.13)
Isn't revising history wonderful?! Much if not most of Spanish Jewry who converted to christianity did so for material and social gain. The vast majority were not threatened with the rack or with being boiled in oil. Like the Jews of western Europe who thought the Enlightenment was their ticket to a better life, much of Spanish Jewry volunteered abandon their heritage for the sake of supposed safety and tranquility with the people of the church. Jews never learn and G-d never ceases to teach the same lesson.
11. 9 Shallow is as shallow does
Historian ,   Israel   (10.06.13)
In the case in the Tora, there is NO evidence or even suggestion that the son in question had abandoned or rejected the brit. Ergo, it does NOT in any way conflict with what I wrote.
12. 7 It's the brit OF AVRAHAM, OF Yitzkhak AND OF YAAKOV
Historian ,   Israel   (10.06.13)
Read the Bible AND take a course in logic
13. #10 shy
solomon ,   bklyn   (10.06.13)
And where did you get these “facts”? Revising history is not wonderful and you shouldn’t do it.
14. #13, Solomon, here's your reference
Shy Guy ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.07.13)
The Origins of the Inquisition in Fifteenth-Century Spain, by Professor Ben Zion Netanyahu. That's the PM's late father. It's 1200 pages of very detailed history. Get yourself a copy (Amazon). Highly enlightening.
15. to #1 Jo
Bluegrass Picker ,   Afula   (10.07.13)
did you complain when Elizabeth Warren defined herself entitled to preference-benefits as "native american" because she claims 1/32 ancestry of Cherokee? and cited the evidence as "high cheekbones". Or do you have a racist, bullying double standard?
16. #14 shy
solomon ,   bklyn   (10.08.13)
I therefore apologize. I thought you 'jumped the gun', but it was I who did it. Thank you for the reference.
17. Yisrael THAT ALSO SEE THE NORTHEAST OF BNEI ANUSIM BRASIL
gean pereira ,   Brasil   (11.20.13)
I liked the post, however I feel this article full of demagoguery. In the case of bnei anusim a first world country the Jewish authorities are euphoric. Meanwhile there is a huge growing bnei anusim here in northeastern Brazil and there is a concrete action by the authorities to give us assistance. as we are also children of Jewish renegades forced a third world country.
