You ask a good question. Where there have been large numbers of secret Jews in the same area they have tended to marry among themselves, just as some Palestinian clans admit they are Jewish in origin and only marry among their related clans of Jewish ancestry. The question of matrilineal descent is in the Pentateuch. An Israelite woman was married to an Egyptian man and they had a son.
