1. The madness of Kissinger led to this option
Dror ,   Haifa, Israe   (10.03.13)
Kissinger sold israel out for his newly formed "arrangement" with the Saudis. Israel was sold out by a despicable erev rav kofer.
2. The nuclear option
Rhonda ,   Chicago, USA   (10.03.13)
My understanding- although I could be wrong- is that at this point in the war, Israel was losing and the nuclear option was introduced as a topic as a potential to turn the tide. If someone else has a different understanding, please comment.
3. Thanks to the Imam in Chief, next "display" will be for real

4. Nothing new here...
Abdel Karim Salim ,   Jerusalem   (10.03.13)
Shortly after the end of the 1973 Yom Kippur War western media revealed that Egypt under Sadat had already taken Israel's nuclear capability into consideration before the war broke out , and was quite prepared to retaliate against Israel if the nuclear option was selected . Furthermore , TIME magazine published an article sometime in 1976 entitled : " How Israel Got the A-Bomb " and revealed that in the first few days of the 1973 war Moshe Dayan whispered to Golda Meir : " This seems the end of the Third Temple ... " , and suggested that Israel prepare the bomb for usage . However, TIME added , the quick decline of the Syrian onslaught in the Golan made Dayan change his mind . Also , Peter Pry's book " Israel's Nuclear Arsenal " broaches Moshe Dayan's proposal for the nuclear option...
5. We are not prepared at all
Dov ben David ,   Eilat, Israel   (10.03.13)
"Dayan to Golda: We should prepare nuclear option" Sadly I must say that the Israeli society is not prepared at all for taking a bomb with radiation or even gas. Everyone that lives in Israel knows in what state our shelters are. A gas attack would harvest anyone sitting in a shelter breathing. This is tragic and I should perhaps not reveal it, as it could be used by the enemy. We have gas masks, but the shelter should be protected by filters as well. We cannot wear a gas mask for a long time. There is no protection for a nuke. If it happens, we will simply die... As I see it, if the Iron Dome would intercept an incoming nuke, it would only spread its poison on a higher altitude and the disaster would get worse. The only protection there is, is our hidden threat to retaliate with a hundred nukes back....
6. Ask yourself why this story is being published now?
Shmuel B. ,   Ramat Gan   (10.03.13)
When an article or editorial relating to intelligence or national security appears in any newspaper without an author's name, it's time to put on your critical thinking cap. Avner Cohen is author of 'Israel and the Bomb' a book calling for Israel's disarmament. Under US and European pressure, Meir was 'asked' to restore Arab pride lost after their humiliating defeat in the Six Day War. The West feared that a pre-emptive strike and a second Israeli victory would cause the price of oil to skyrocket or even worse, initiate an Arab oil embargo. Of course, it happened regardless. Meir/Dayan/Zeira believed that a 'limited military loss' would restore UN sympathy for Israel. By showing the world that Arab armies 'went in for the kill' in a surpise attack on Israel's holiest day of the year would finally show the world who the true aggressors are - even if it meant absorbing the first blows of a unified Egyptian-Syrian strike. Meir feared that a pre-emptive strike would force the UN to declare a total economic and military blockade against Israel. She was probably right. In her mind, all options where bad. It's important to note that on the morning of October 6, Kissinger told Mier that Israel would not receive "so much as a nail" from the US if the IDF pre-empted. David Elazar demanded a general call up of the reserves on October 5 and a pre-emptive IAF stike at 11:00 on October 6 but Dyan denied his requests. Elazar was forced to fall on his sword for those who really caused the deaths of nearly 3000 soldiers. According to the Agranat Commission report "Elazar bears personal responsibility for the assessment of the situation and the preparedness of the IDF", a sentiment still widely held among most Israelis. Ironically, Elazar is buried on Mount Herzl, in the plot adjoining that of Yoni Netanyahu.
7. what did Dayan actually mean?
zionist forever   (10.03.13)
Israel's nuclear weapons are not kept in silos just ready for the PM to press the red button the way they are in the US they are not readily assembled and assembly can probably take a couple of days. Whilst I doubt there is anybody still alive who heard Dayan and knew what was going through his mind it is probable that at this stage in the war rather than actually wanting to go and use a nuke he meant prepare the bombs just incase. First days of the war Israel was on the defensive, suffering heavy casualties, the Americans were refusing to send new weapons so I imagine all options were on the table including the use of a nuke if it came down to it. This is what happens when you rely on others to provide you with weapons which was why it was later decided Israel should build its own fighter jets and tanks.
8. Zionist Forever
Dror ,   Haifa, Israel   (10.03.13)
America is bankrupt. They will have to default on their debt. Already there are negative circumstances to their decline. Israelis have become very spoiled and complacent. It will take a huge awakening for Israelis to become what they were 40+ years ago. Those Israelis no longer exist. We now have lame brained reality show watching idiots in our culture. They are so ignorant that they simply refuse to believe that America is losing power and influence. What is worse is that they cannot conceive of an Israel without American backing.
9. War No Surprise
Bill Stein ,   USA   (10.03.13)
I was in Israel during the 1973 war and I witnessed troops being pulled off the street in Jerusalem into buses the night before the war began this was no surprise. The soldiers told me that they were going up to The Golan Heights And couldn't talk about it. This conversation took place 18 hours before the war began. Someone is hiding something because if I knew a war was about to begin why didn't The Israeli government. There are rumors that there was conspiracy between Henry Kissinger and a traitor within the Israeli government for Israel to absorb the first attack on October 6, 1973 to give the Egyptians back thier pride so they would negotiate peace with Israel and force a compromise on the Israelis. This As described in the Israeli documentary who shot my father the story of Joe Alon. This was no surprise there appears to be a conspiracy of silence from higher authorities.
10. #2
Bill Stein ,   USA   (10.03.13)
Nucular option against cairo and damascus I know was used to threaten Kissinger if he did not resupply Israel things were that bad
11. Conspiracy
Bill Stein ,   USA   (10.03.13)
My opinion I agree it was a conspiracy there are rumors that Nixon and Kissinger Sadat worked with a traitor in the Israeli goverment. That the war was planned to put pressure on the Israeli goverment to give up Sinai and to give some pride back to Egypt. Motavations also may have included on the American side to test weapons, and oil and as a distraction from watergate. The war was no surprise I witnessed troops being called up the day before. There is more to the story of the war that meets the eye.
12. Dyan's statement is confusing to me...
BUILD BABY BUILD !!! ,   United States   (10.03.13)
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but, wasn't it Dyan who permitted the "Dome of the Rock " Mosque to remain on the site of Solomon's former TWO Temples? So, what exactly does 'Third Temple ' mean in this context? The Dome of the Rock is or isn't the Mosque a Temple? I thought Temple was Jewish MosqueMuslim, am I in error?
13. Nr 5. You err - I Quote -
Arn. ,   Sweden.   (10.03.13)
The only protection there is, is our hidden threat to retaliate with a hundred nukes back.... Comment - The Only protection is to preemt. Arn.Sweden.
14. Dayan didn't want to nuke anybody just send a message
zionist forever   (10.03.13)
Assuming Dayan had actually wanted Golda to set off a bomb it would't have been against Egypt or Syria most likely it would have been a test out at sea which is how newly emerging nuclear powers usually announce to the world they joined the nuclear club. Israel never held those tests because of the ambiguity policy worked out with the US in order for them to be able to turn a blind eye to Israel's nuclear program. If Nixon was refusing to send fresh weapons a simple nuclear test out at sea which harmed nobody would have made him sit up and say if I want to keep this war conventional I better start sending some weapons. It would have also sent a message to Sadat and Assad end this war now before it escalates.
15. #7 Peres
(10.03.13)
Peres told about it in a Yediot Article, I think around 2000. He told (truthfully or not) that Golda Meir ordered armed Phantom Jets to be parked in full view of American spy satellites to convince Kissinger to supply Israel with arms.
16. Bomb
AlbertE.   (10.05.13)
This surely suggest at least at that time, 1973, Israeli had the components of the bomb but not an assembled weapon but that a bomb ready to go could be assembled and ready to go in hours.
17. Third Temple.
AlbertE.   (10.05.13)
That Third Temple is not a temple proper but the State of Israel, the Jewish homeland.
18. Demonstration
AlbertE.   (10.05.13)
Dayan perhaps favored a demonstration first. Show the Arab and the WORLD what the consequences would be. Perhaps too an above ground detonation over the Mediterranean to let the Arab know what COULD occur. Such an event was proposed prior to the dropping of the first bomb on Hiroshima.
19. Opacity
AlbertE.   (10.05.13)
The Israeli practices what is called opacity with ambiguity with regard to nuclear weaponry. NO ONE sees what they have but they keep you guessing and off guard. You are just not sure what is and what isn't. Good for to keep the enemy in the dark and that foe has doubts that cannot be ignored.
20. #9, #10, #11 bill
solomon ,   bklyn   (10.06.13)
You have an overactive imagination. They would make a good movie, however.
21. #12 build
solomon ,   bklyn   (10.06.13)
As #17 alberte has stated, the third Temple is the State of Israel. The first two Temples were those built in biblical times.
