Germans and Jews in 19th Century Germany both saw themselves as 'chosen'. This helped both a symbiosis and later a repulsion. German Jews were so enamoured of Germany that they tried to 'Reform' G-d's Law and some scrapped even Bris Milah to look more German -- but in the end it didn't help.
