1. They can't be all that devout
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (10.04.13)
They do, after all, attend a Roman Catholic school -- a pretty conservative one, it would appear. Do they get a free pass on catechism classes? Doubtful.

strange for a moslem family to send their kids to a Roman Catholic school, mixing with infidels. Can't be that religious or maybe they thought they could integrate and make change against the school rules. Good for the school to stand by its principles and rules, and if these kids dont want to conform, they should find another school....or soon the hijab will also be worn there.

Any UK school receiving public funding is obliged to give a 'free pass' with regard to any religious activities to any child if the parents wish it. Independent schools are another matter. Curiously, in the UK, some parents send their children to 'church' schools, even if they are non-adherents, if they believe such schools offer a better quality secular curriculum. Such may be the case with this child, although, as we see, there will be an obligation to abide by general school regulations.
6. Comment on number 3. Headscarves
Danny ,   London England   (10.06.13)
British schools generally have school uniforms and schools with large numbers of Muslim girls often include an optional uniform headscarf. The alternative to adjusting rules is to encourage separate Muslim schools which would create more problems. During a government inspection of a Saudi school in London, books were found that taught that Jews and Christians were descended from apes and pigs.
7. Litvish versus Chasidish
Joseph ,   London England   (10.06.13)
In the great Lithuanian yeshivahs boys had to shave until they were married, with a few exceptions for Chasidish boys who were permitted not to shave. When I attended American public schools in the 1960's we were discouraged from starting to shave too young, and I didn't shave until I was 18. These are cultural, but NOT religious issues.
8. Reply to number 1. UK faith schools
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.06.13)
The UK 1944 Education Act gives parents the right to eduvcate their children according to there faith, and therefore the Govt pays for Church of England, Roman and Jewish schools if they comply with relevant national curriculum requirements. Religious education is a compulsory subject in UK schools, and Jews and Muslims in Christian schools often have alternative religion lessons. There are almost no govt funded Muslim schools, so Muslims pupils tend to attend Christian schools.

I also attended American public schools in the l960's, but I wasn't aware there were any restrictions on the boys as far as shaving was concerned, although it's possible that's because I'm not a male. However, with the girls, they were very strict about us not wearing our skirts too short and teachers would occasionally line girls up in the gym and rip their hems down if we violated their skirt length rule. The interesting thing is I had friends who went to Catholic school, and a number of the teachers I had in public school were no less strict than many of the nuns my friends had.
10. muslims must play by the rules or .......

leave the country. They believe they are superior to other religions and need to change, to live in free societies, otherwise they should be shipped back, collect, to their racist countries of origin.
