1. Nonsense, civil unions recognized since 1948
Miron ,   USA   (10.29.13)
Can they enter bill to recognise cats?
2. @1, what's recognized is...
AY ,   USA   (10.29.13)
essentially common law marriage for opposite-sex couples and foreign marriages for same-sex couples. However, these are not equal to marriage by the rabbinate.
3. Does this mean that Reform rabbis . . .
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (10.29.13)
Does this mean that Reform rabbis will be entitled to perform 'civil unions' in their temples? Will there be 'civil conversions' ? Are divorce laws prepared for same gender divorce? When Rav Elyashiv ztl accepted civil marriage it was for those from the former Soviet Union who were not Halachically Jewish.
4. 'One of the basic human rights .....
Yusef ,   London England   (10.29.13)
Lapid tells us that 'one of the basic human rights is the right to love in any way one sees fit.' My grandaughter loves me and wants to marry me. My neighbor's wife isn't getting enough and would love me to be her other partner. Our pet dog goes crazy when I arrive home. I really love her and want to express it. I crave the serenity of the hospital morgue and want to express my love. I want to follow Mohamed and have four wives, including an eight year old.
5. NO FUTUR FOR YESH ATID !
(10.29.13)
6. Lapid is like the UE he wants to destroy judaism
Frederic   (10.29.13)
7. Gays & seculars can marry
yoel ,   Israel   (10.29.13)
This stupid bill is utter stupidity yet civil marrages are on hold.. is it because the Gays nand Seculars are Jews? I see this proposal as degrading civil marriage must be allowed between people who love each other- be it Jew or gentile.. you guys have lost it completely."Wake up"
8. # 4
Philip ,   Afula, Israel   (10.29.13)
And its not by chance that you are called Yusef !!!
9. what's next...?
meyer ,   brooklyn   (10.29.13)
people will be able to marry their pet and then themselve. why not?
10. Civil marriage & gay marriage are different issues!
Ted   (10.29.13)
It is right for the secular to be given the right to marry without the rabbi's approval. BUT it is WRONG MORALLY to allow gays to be recognized as regular couples and families - which then would grant them means to raise children in a fundamentally wrong environment! Gays can go on to live their lifestyles as they wish, without recognition as married couples.
11. Lapid want s to legilize sodoma and gomorra
Anna M Sedda ,   Rome   (10.29.13)
Marriage is not a game and innocent children are involved in ti; gay cannot procreate and same sex marriage is against nature, human decency, human rights and children wellness... Lapid only wants to legalize his own marriage, but he was born from a man and a woman,NOT from 2 man or 2 women..
12. The only democracy...
Joe ,   UK   (10.29.13)
Reading some of these comments, I feel like I'm actually talking to people coming from Saudi Arabia, or even the USA. Yeah, civil marriages will allow intermarriage between Arabs and Jews, and also their pets or their grandmothers, it should be restricted!!! So should democracy for allowing people like these to have decision power.
13. 60 years late but a very welcome change
Avi   (10.29.13)
This law is the flag banner of Yesh Atid and the breaking of monopoly by the religious groups. It's a great shame this change only happened in 2013 with Israel lagging behind other nations in the world when we once spearheaded equality progression. We were a democracy since day one, with equal rights including voting for men AND women while most of Europe was still lagging behind. Had the second female head of state in the world. Tel Aviv was proclaimed the gay capital of the world with international parades taking place every year. Yet on such a basic thing like free marriage it took us well into the new millennium to accomplish. Let us hope the fundamentalist religious shackles will remain broken and move on to other basic freedoms like public transportations during the Sabbath. If you're religious that's nice but don't force it on everyone else. This country was built by secular Jews and not meant to be a Halacha state. Keep it to yourself.
14. #3, yes, yes and yes!
Vered, Israel   (10.29.13)
It does. And you will also have the right not to recognize those marriages, divorces, conversions or anything else. It's just that your opinion will not affect those who disagree with you.
15. Such happiness in Tel Aviv
RJE ,   Adelaide, Australia   (10.29.13)
if this measure becomes law.
16. To Joe, UK.
David Clarke ,   Liverpool, England   (10.29.13)
Fully agreed, Im sure the messianic right-wing extremists, religious fanatics and their Arab hating homophobic Ynet trolls are positively appopleptic with rage knowing that interacial intermarriage between Jew and Arab, Jew and Goyim and between Gay people will soon take place in Israel and that Israel will soon Join the rest of the civilised world in that regard. A long overdue piece of legislation, its about time marriage, love and Israel in general stopped being held hostage by these backwards religious fanatics and right-wing extremists and the rabbis and politicians that support them.
17. Lapid ios out to destroy Jewish
Reuven   (10.29.13)
Israel.
18. Welcome To The 21st Century
World Citizen ,   the world   (10.29.13)
I can't believe that Israel still allows one particular religion dictate how, who or when two human beings can enter into a voluntary contract between themselves. It's medieval.
19. How will this work?
Orly ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.31.13)
Would civil unions be provided only to homosexual couples or also to heterosexuals, and if not - why not? Would a civil union be allowed between a citizen who is legally married with a citizen who is not legally married, and if not - why not? Would a civil union be allowed between more than two citizens, and if not - why not?
20. @2 you got emotional
Miron ,   USA   (11.02.13)
services by office owning stamp of sovereign and weilding ecumenical reigns at the same time can be easily fulfilled by: a. Monarchy of England b. Vatican d. Mecca Although Elton John believes he has same powers. And you know, when he puts his two crooked, hairy, agly five headed pair of dragons on the keyboard and squeezes moderately buzzing sound out his aorta I do believe him.
21. Hilarious and ridiculous. 2 men can't be married.
Jake ,   USA   (11.08.13)
Plain & simple. Israel has a fantastic system where the state doesn't marry anyone. The religious authorities perform marriages, because marriage is a religious institution. 2 men living together as sexual partners can be called many things but it sure as hell ain't marriage.
