The man probably only married her for image and to have a kid. She spent her whole married life living like a queen on foreign money whilst he was living in Ramallah. Actually, half-life of Po-210 is 138,4 days, roughly 4,5 months. After 8 years, there would be approx. 1 part per 2 million left of the original substance, or 0,00005 %. Is that detectable? Depends on how much there was to start with. I have no idea how much would be required to be detectable today, but I find it highly unlikely that there could have been that much in Arafats body prior to his death. He would have been a walking nuclear reactor, severely irradiating everybody in his presence.And he would have had radiation burns all over his body, not to mention that he would have died much much sooner. I like trying to figure things out myself. Po-210 has a half life of 138 days. 9 years would be about 12.8 half lives of po-210. 1/2 to the to the 12.8 power is about 1.4 time 10 to the -4 or 1.4 ten thousandths. 10/1.4 is about 7. So the radioactive strength would be divided by about 7000. I saw 8000 in a news report. A lethal radiation dose is supposed to be 4.5 Sv which according to Wikipedia would be 240 uCi. If he had supposedly 50 the lethal dose in him, he would have started with 1200uCi. Dividing that by 7000 would give 0.13uCi. These are all top of the head calculations but the news report giving 8000 suggests I am thinking in basically the correct way. Could you detect that much. I'm no expert but I have worked with radiation I am sure that if it were all in a test tube it would be relatively easy to do so. Spread through a whole human body that had been embalmed and thus the blood drained (unless they did not drain the blood)? Probably they could. But could they profile the spectrum of emission well enough to prove that was polonium? Or maybe it just is if he is above background for a dead body they assume it was polonium because what else would it be. Sounds possible but shaky.
