1. Politically correct media don't report on SA's own racism
Tracy   (11.23.13)
South Africa is beset with violent attacks against migrants from other African countries - including numerous murders. SA also has a shameful track record of violence against the remaining whites in that country. Many white farmers have been killed. That alone should make South Africa the target for United Nations and media criticism, but you don't hear a word from any of them. Don't take my word for it. Just google: - South Africa attacks on African migrants - South Africa attacks on whites. South Africa is also considered the "rape capital of the world". Violence of black against black is rife in black-ruled South Africa.. But they sanctimoniously criticize Israel.
2. Ki MiDrom Africa Tetseh Hyedi'a
AVouskila ,   South America   (11.23.13)
I agree most heartedly with this comprehensive Post. More so, it talks to my own believe that Africa (With North and South Africa included) is the Depth of Israel's logistics.Because of its geographic location, in a neighbourhood that is not ready to accept its existence as a Jewish Democratic State, because of the Human Right protection in its pemperament, Israel is the cathalist for the African awakening and its own 'saviour' from a clean divorce from the WEST (USA and EU). The approach this Article expound is refreshing and finally someone with a commitment to Israel longivity has spoken clearly about the Geopolitical alternative to be explored immediately before it is too too late.
3. correct but.........
michael weinreich ,   cape town   (11.23.13)
as long as Zionist jews and jewish business with money in south africa continue to help these monkies in south Africa it will be futile and a waste of time and money. let them look after their own people. this so called rainbow state south Africa has gone to hell like the rest of southern Africa.
4. South Africa is a racist state
Rh ,   Israel   (11.23.13)
White South Africans who were not even born when Apartheid existed are discriminated against. A job can only be given to a white male if every other race and sex is unqualified. The government is totally corrupt and incompetent and the average black man is no better off financially in the best case scenario than the before. Attacking Jews has always been a way to deflect attention onto others and while Jews in South Africa are not marginalised attacking Israel is a proxy.
5. South Africa has more than 10% population infected with HIV
Airdrone pilot ,   World   (11.23.13)
And this is reality, why don't they take care of their own business, clean up their country and history ? Just google it.
6. Not my experience
Claude ,   CPT and London   (11.23.13)
I have encountered very little real hostility towards Jews or even Israel. Wearing a small Israeli flag badge in London I may encounter grunts of disapproval from BDS supporters in fashionable London suburbs, where Guardian readers still cannot quite get over the fact that socialism is no longer going to provide them with a welfare state. But in Cape Town even within a more confident Cape Moslem community there is no mass anti Jewish or anti Israel feeling. I witnessed an obviously popular Israeli cosmetic stand was selling to plenty of head scarfed ladies looking after their nails. I doubt very much if these Cape Town "Malays" were too concerned with the views of an ANC Minister. But I did want to ask and interrupt their manicures! The ANC and FM may speak loudly and condem IL. The ANC is a party now so mired in corruption scandals and incompetence that any claim to represent the poor in SA ( let alone the concerns of Palestine )is laughable. This is a party that supported Ghaddafi, still supports Mugabe, has an admirable record in the UN in supporting democracy in Burma and hosting a visit from the Dhali Lama of Tibet!! SA Israel trade flourishes, since when do government ministers from any nation truly promote trade and commerce.
7. Let's help her
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.23.13)
She wants to boycott Israel, we'll show her boycott. No more Israeli medical advancements and chemotherapy protocols to South Africa. Jewish South Africans, of course, are more than welcome to come to Israel for treatment. No more Israeli agricultural experts teaching modern irrigation and farming techniques. Perhaps Abbas can send you some, or Haniyeh. No more exchange students from South Africa allowed in Israel. Unless, of course, they are Jews. Jews will always be welcome in the Jewish State. No more advanced technological developments or licensing agreements for Israeli IT products to South Africa. Except for Jews, of course. They can continue to use IT products dependent upon Israeli-developed technology. The Jews of South Africa should not be made to suffer because their government is hopelessly stupid. As to everyone else -- perhaps Abbas can send some tin cans and pieces of string. Mobile phone technology, of course, will be off limits to all but Jews. And so on and so forth. Now, THAT is a boycott. How do you like us now, baby? HOW DO YOU LIKE US NOW? Have no fear. Doubtless Abbas and Haniyeh et al. will pick up the slack. Won't they?
8. Give her a dollar for a lolly - pop, she will get silent
Miron ,   USA   (11.23.13)
for a few minutes, right until her mind gets occupied by something more big and more shiny than Israel.
9. South Africa
yoel ,   Israel   (11.23.13)
when they needed our help[ we helped them in more ways than one, now they criticize us- shame on you.
10. South Africa is a Muslim colony. You see it every day.
(11.23.13)
11. Oil money is very powerful.
(11.23.13)
12. The conscience for a willing audience
tiki ,   belgium   (11.23.13)
If the focus point wouldn't be Jewish Israel, nobody would give a rat's ass about the ''conscience of South Africa, a country riddled in crime!
13. So the fact that there is violence and coorruption...
Gunnar ,   Gothenburg, Sweden   (11.23.13)
...in today's South Africa (what countries do NOT have these phenomena, by the way) means that the country is not credible when it speaks out against racism and discrimination???? Not a very intelligent thing to say, frankly, but I suppose the author want "the good ol´days" of Apartheid back.....
14. SA-IL relations
Mark ,   Cape Town   (11.23.13)
The current government has nothing to do with Israel's former ally, who was a firm partner in many ways.
15. 13. So you admit that Sweden has violence and corruption
(11.23.13)
16. SA-IL relations
Mark ,   Cape Town   (11.23.13)
SA has refused to condemn Syria and has actively supported Iran, Saudi Arabia, Burma (before Aung San was released), Libya (under Gaddafi), Russia, China and all the other usual suspects. With such friends, I would be very concerned about Israel if it had a close relationship with South Africa.
17. SA is going the way of Zimbabwe, just taking it's sweet time
tom ,   tel aviv   (11.23.13)
18. is #7 meant for real or comedy?
(11.23.13)
19. # 13
Eaglebeak ,   Left Coast, USA   (11.23.13)
So you want to listen to the pot calling the kettle black without bothering to consider the source? I don't think they have anything to say to us worth listening to.
20. But the problem is Israel!
Just   (11.23.13)
It's a question of solving what they are accusing us of doing: the 46 year military occupation, the mistreatment of Palestinians, the two systems. We're not so innocent and won't be able to fool everyone forever.
21. 15 Sweden had violent riots by immigrants this year
(11.23.13)
22. to #20 Just
Andi ,   Israel   (11.23.13)
Firstly Israel is trying to solve it -through negotiation. Secondly many of South Africa's accusations-Israel is just like former apartheid SA, committing genocide, etc -on which their policies are based are nonsense. Thirdly their hypocrasy is there to see for everyone-nothing to say about Palestinian conditions in Syria and Lebanon, and nothing to say about occupation in Western Sahara, and Tibet-only Israel Israel Israel
23. Near Disaster
Isaac Ariel ,   Hyderabad, India   (11.24.13)
SA is emerging as an economic power within Africa. Why would their Leadership stumble with this stupidity. SA Leadership: rise up...wash yourself off this error and see the blessing in supporting Israel. Hillel / Student Ambassadors : Shift energies towards SA and other African schools.
24. to #22 Andi
Just ,   Tel Aviv   (11.24.13)
Yes, full aware of the negotiations that have stretched over 3 generations and they remain long overdue in achieving anything tangible. I'm glad you raised the topic of conditions of Palestinians in neighboring nations and other occupations, essentially agreeing that the Israel's occupation is also a problem that needs to be resolved, just like the others.
25. When the word "WORLD" is used...
Dan ,   USA   (11.24.13)
in conjunction with Israel it usually means the Arab/Muslim Middle East, Europe, long a haven for all things anti Jewish, and most of the nations in the UN. Now one might include the Obama regime and elite American Jewish liberals. Most of the world is anti semetic. Weak Jews are an easy target, but a strong Jewish state is frightening to these same people so it must be brought to it's knees any way possible. Unless Israel wages a successful military strike against Iran, the world will not weep when Israel is annilated by Irans nuclear power.
26. #7 Sarah B, somehow i dont think so
Avi   (11.24.13)
Hate to break it to you honey but you do not represent Israel and hopefully never will, So i suggest you stick to your knitting dear and leave politics to those who actually represent this country.
27. Listen to her
David Polovin ,   Cape Town, SA   (11.24.13)
There is a good deal of wisdom in this article, which even a South African Jew like me who is committed to Israel's survival and prosperity, did not fully appreciate for reason of not sufficiently understanding South Africa's place in the hearts of Israel's detractors. Many of the sentiments expressed by talback commentators are simply uninformed and it would be better to pay attention to what the author is saying rather than reacting emotionally.
28. And what about Zimbabwe?
Raoul ,   Herzliya Israel   (11.24.13)
Hard to know where to begin, but if South Africa wants to point fingers outside of the country, why not start with Zimbabwe, where Mugabe has for so many years ruled with fear over fellow Africans - so well documented in Peter Goodwin's book *Fear*. Not to mention SA's internal problems such as a rape every three minutes (largely children), and horrendous crime generally, vast amounts spent on the military (who are they fighting exactly?) and so much more. Our misnomered *occupied* territories - they are DISPUTED territories - don't even come close to the suffering of Zimbabweans under Mugabe's cruel regime. Here peace is being attempted at least, whereas both eyes are permanantly closed to Zimbabwe.
29. To: No. 27
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (11.24.13)
Have you forgotten Durban? That's part of her unique vision for South Africa, too, isn't it?
