In the Queen's English 'students' means university and 'pupils' means schoolboys etc. The law against saluting could not involve two or three years in prison for minors, which also suggets they were over a certain age. Students looking for 'a bit of fun' would not be likely to choose Auschwitz as the place to have their fun. If I were the judge I would give them a week in jail and have them spend that week watching films like World at War and Shoah to see what really happened to Jews and Polish Catholics in Auschwitz..
