1. Hypocritical? Israel has not imprisoned any American spies.
Yaniv ,   Israel   (12.24.13)
2. shame on you USA
Hannes ,   Johannesburg SA   (12.24.13)
that you hold this man captive. You even release terrorists from Guantanamo prison and Russian spies before this man. You will pay the price if he dies in jail.
3. If Israel had the chutzpa and OO's of US or Arabs.......
Yoni ,   Israel   (12.24.13)
we would have had Pollard home years ago.
4. Hypocritical? Agreed!
Rafi ,   Merkaz, Israel   (12.24.13)
Pollard is an AMERICAN caught spying on his own country. He's a traitor. The NSA is an officially-sanctioned entity doing their jobs. Look at Vanunu. Same as Pollard. The USA can release Pollard, if they wish, but not let him leave the country.
5. Pollard
Debbie ,   Israel   (12.24.13)
Well, you could also read that the other way around, and say that the U.S. has chutzpah, continuing to keep Jonathan Pollard imprisoned, when they themselves have been "spying" on Israel.
6. It is a big "chutzpa" to force Israel,
eli ,   Yerushalayim   (12.24.13)
to free terrorists for nothing.
7. LOL
homer ,   ny ny   (12.24.13)
The only logical US response is an illogical one.
8. Double standards?
Sherlock Holmes ,   London England   (12.24.13)
Obama has pushed Israel into releasing dozens of convicted terrorists and murderers, and Obama admits the USA spied on Israeli heads of govt, but it is 'chutzpa' for Israel to ask for Pollard's release after 27 years for giving Israel information it used to protect itself.
9. Pollard
Debbie ,   Israel   (12.24.13)
What exactly would Mr. Baker call the U.S. for blackmailing and manhandling Israel into releasing hundreds of unrepentant Arab murdereres of men, women, children, babies and old people? I think we would need a much stronger word than chutzpah.
10. Release Pollard or no progress in the "peace" talks
(12.24.13)
11. the 'little difference is
tiki ,   belgium   (12.24.13)
That Pollard has served his time in prison (more than any other spy) and the American spies are walking around free and being protected by the different US administrations. Mr. Baker should check the meaning of the word chutzpah again before uttering it!
12. Not "Chutzpa". Its punishing Israel!
Jim Yakamoto ,   Israel   (12.24.13)
I agree with those who say the Pollard is an American Citizen who spied on his own country and deserved to be punished. However, 27 years years in prison is more than a life sentence which murderers get! This is not punishment. This is a vendetta and with the way relations between the Obama Administration and Israel are it is very unlikely that Pollard will be released although he is "eligible" for parole in 2015. Of course, had Jonathan Pollard not been a JEW and had spied for Russia or China, well, would he still be in prison?
13. Like it or not ....
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.24.13)
... those are the terms. Pollard goes free. If the United States can exercise leverage and threats against Israel in order to secure the release of murderers from Israeli prisons, Israel can return the favor on behalf of one Jew who never hurt anyone and has served so much of a sentence which was imposed despite a plea agreement. How do you like us now, Obama? Pollard goes free and we string you along until April; or we end the ridiculous "negotiations" rigamarole right now. I'd say the ball is in Obama's court. It's a win-win for Israel, either way. Pollard's just the icing on the cake.
14. What is the connection?
Rafi ,   Merkaz, Israel   (12.24.13)
With peace talks or anything else? Pollard is an AMERICAN caught spying on America for a foreign government! If I'm not mistaken, he was even in the US military at the time - even worse. Yes, let's stop the peace talks because of an American traitor. Real bright, people.
15. America & Israel

What you expect from this Islamist President, to be on the side of Israel. This Islamist president will do his best to weaken and destroy Israel.
16. Hutzpah? Yes, but that's how we do things
Jacob E ,   Holon, Israel   (12.24.13)
When the US does it, it's called pressure, when we do it, it's called hutzpah. If the US can pressure us to release palestinian murders, we can pressure them to release a spy.

Actually Israel has, but the government has generally blocked publication of the case. See "Spies Against Armagedon" for more info.
18. Pollard Release
Chanawashdc ,   Washington DC   (12.24.13)
Pollard could have been out of jail years ago had he applied for parole. His own attorney admits it. But applying for parole would mean acknowledging his guilt. Pollard wants to be pardoned which would mean in his mind that he was not guilty. In any case, a federal sentance of life is 30 years with mandatory release at the end of that time.
19. Pollard
graczek ,   Maryland, USA   (12.24.13)
The only way Pollard will leave his incarceration is in a casket. Suck it up, Zionists!
20. Pollard spied on Muslim enemies, never on America
Steve Benassi ,   Silver Bay, MN USA   (12.24.13)
21. Pollard: political hostage, Prisoner of Zion
David Turner ,   Richmond   (12.24.13)
"Israel has taken chutzpah to new heights, simultaneously demanding that the United States stop spying on Israel and that it releases the guy caught spying on the United States for Israel." Lacking a moral compass does not justify appropriating "chutzpah" by a bureaucratic hack as camouflage and cover-up for American judicial immorality and political hypocrisy.
22. pollard
ee ,   ny ny usa   (12.24.13)
While Israel, releases murderers for the sake of negotiations and Israel has prime minister spyed on by US, pollard sits for 2 decades. What harm at this point can the man do, the eighties are long gone
23. Pollard spied for money, not conviction
zionist ignore   (12.24.13)
He offered to spy for other countries, as long as they paid. $$$$ was his religion. Believe it or not jews can commit crimes. Because it against a non-jew it is still a crime.
24. To: Jim at No. 12
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (12.24.13)
I beg to differ. The United States federal penal code does not allow for parole. Those who are sentenced to finite terms (i.e., a fixed number of years) are eligible for early release once they have served one-half of their sentence and have not been disciplinary problems. But those sentenced to life imprisonment are not eligible for early release. You cannot calculate their life span, so how can you calculate one-half thereof? In answer to your other question, there are plenty far more damaging spies who have been released from United States prisons. Pollard is singled out because he is a Jew. No surprise there. Alger Hiss and Whittaker Chambers were far more damaging spies than Julius Rosenberg, and Ethel Rosenberg was not a spy at all .... but only the Rosenbergs were executed. And the damaging evidence -- the so-called "Venona" tapes -- which were used to convict the Rosenbergs were provided to the United States by none other than John Cairncross -- the British MI6 officer who was a Soviet spy (the famous "Fifth Man" whose identity was not revealed until following the collapse of the Soviet Union).
