We heard this explosion last night. Prayers for all the victims and their families. It is surprising this does not happen more often with the shoddy workmanship of many workers here. My son and his wife moved into a new building, and a technician accidentally removed a piece of pipe from their gas heating system. In our building, we have had a few large water leaks when construction workers accidentally broke pipes while renovating apartments in the building. They could just as easily have been gas pipes, so the damage from water does not seem so bad now. There has to be a way to ensure that workers are qualified, and also not overworked. It is minor compare to this situation, but we have had the cable company in our home over a dozen times because their technicians as so overworked that they need to fix something and move on to the next home as quickly as possible, and therefore do not do their best work. What a waste, what a shame, that an unqualified or uncaring worker could cause something like this. This could happen to any of us, and something must be done.

destroyed a block of buildings. After that, I had the natural gas to the house disconnected and a steel cap put over the pipe to the house on the outside of the house so that there is no natural gas in the house. Then I had propane tanks with regulators connected to the natural gas lines for the stove and hot water heater. For heat in the winter, I had a pellet stove put into the fireplace that heats the house instead of the central heating system. An electric heater in a bathroom is needed now and then but the utility bills are less and the danger of a natural gas explosion is less. What also prompted me to do that is that a burglar got into the attic through the chimney and cut the natural gas line to the fireplace, trying to kill us. But the smell of the gas that got into the house prompted fast action to cap off that pipe in the attic so natural gas would not go to the fireplace. There was also evidence the vandal or burglar tried to start a fire in the attic but nothing would burn with No Burn Paint sprayed everywhere in the attic. I think that was a psychotic neighbor who set his house on fire in the attic, too, after the Sheriff foreclosed on their house for not paying the mortgage for many months and locked them out.
5. 3 Ephraim: If Jews went into the construction trades
Rivkah   (01.20.14)
instead of relying on Palestinians who sabotage the work just like Mexicans sabotage work they do in the USA, then perhaps there would be fewer problems. Palestinians in Israel, like Mexicans in the USA, are schizophrenic. They want the work and the paychecks, but their mindset is that Gringos (Jews in Israel) are the enemy and sabotage is such fun to "get the Gringos". They like being paid but they just can't resist attacking whenever they think they can get away with it. Palestinians are the same way, but Israel continues to use them in construction projects and repairs. Someday the Jews will learn it isn't just working in restaurants that Palestinians present a hazard to the safety of Jews, it is in construction work and repairs, too. A lot of it is deliberate like when a Mexican (Hispanic) plumber told me a leaky tub faucet needed hundreds of dollars of repairs with the wall torn out, etc. So I got a second opinion from an Gringo plumber who said a ten cent washer was all that was needed.

in Canada and who works today in Israel, tells of the abysmal residential construction that is so very evident in Israel. It is indeed third world crap. No sane western country would tolerate the very poor construction standards that prevail in Israeli construction. No standards worth a damn, thus we have todays terrible disaster.
7. #5 Rivkah: Well said!
Reader ,   Land of Israel   (01.20.14)
There is no chance of peace because the Palestinians don't wnat Israel and Jews here at all. Best thing to do is to throw the Palestinians out and give the jobs to the "refugees" after VERY careful screening who, at this time, are probably less of a threat! Might as well employ them because Zig Zag Bibi doesn't know what to do with them! The problem is that Israelis, both in and over the "Green Line" employ Palestinians because they are illegal and they can pay for cheap labor!
8. standards?
Ron ,   Canada   (01.20.14)
This is typical Israeli yehia beseder. Everything cobbled together, done quickly and then move on. Basic standards and little pride in workmanship. Get in and get out. Something does not appear to belong, remove it or tape it up. Israeli construction industry and maintenance gets away with so much here because of lax standards and because most everything is concrete unless something collapses (recent deck in Hadera?, floor in Jerusalem wedding hall) the construction is forgiving UNLESS there is an explosion or someone is electrocuted. Fly by the seat of your pants gets you a long way but these poor folks are collateral damage and a cost of doing business. Not to compare but a gas leak in Canada will result in evacuation of the neighbourhood not a "I will see you tomorrow"
9. #5 you're wrong #8 you're right
Amy ,   off rt 40   (01.20.14)
This is so completely a case of just cobble things together and "yehiye b'seder" until .... what, until the gas line explodes, until the floor on the dance hall caves in, until until until. It's a complete inability to put any sort of effort into the work until it's absolutely too late. This is not just a worker issue. It's a management issue. This is companies and managers wanting to just get as much done as fast as possible, and not giving a damn what corners have to be cut to get it done and ignoring the shoddy workmanship. Rivkah, blaming Arab labor is the lazy way out. Not even caring if it's demagoguery at this point, which discussion would totally distract from the real issue. It's the people on top who are responsible. The landlord/builder who allowed this kind fo heating system in the first place to be put in the building. It's SOP in so much construction in this country, not todo a real job but to just cobble together whatever works, jerry-rigged or not.

not dangerous gas that destroys and pollutes the environment. As long as we accept this corrupt selfish money system, life for the vast majority on this planet will never be right.
13. 10 Gaon: I don't use propane to heat the house. It is only
Rivkah   (01.21.14)
used for the stove and hot water heater, separate from the natural gas line for the house. Sorry for the confusion in the post.
