1. You are a shameful deluded MK
Italian for Israel ,   Italy   (01.22.14)
This teacher is a self hating person, who declared that Israel is an illegal country. Do you have an idea, mr Horowitz, how hard is in Europe to stem this prejudism?? No, because you live in a leftist bubble of delusions. An educator who undermines moral among youth, being paid by a State he doesn't acknowledge, is a freat hypocritical, as much as a danger. But, after all, what can we expect by Meretz?? It is no wonder that i have never seen us in a convention for Israel's friend. I doubt you are so different by arab parties.
2. Sorry Nitzan you are on the wrong side of this issue
steve ,   tel aviv Israel   (01.22.14)
It is so unconscionable to even suggest that teachers have the right to influence their students in high school with their political agendas. It is one thing to inspire open discussions of the issues regarding the country and another to fill their heads with a particular political stand. The teacher has a responsibility to create an atmosphere of openness. This is clearly not the case and he should be removed.
3. teachers to keep their politic views
Naomi ,   Tel aviv   (01.22.14)
Teachers have absolute freedom of speech but not during their working hours! Just imagine if each professor gave its students its own politics opinions ?!! That would be insane Moreover children can be very influenced by adults and repeat what adults say, without even thinking about the facts . So keep your opinions in your house!
4. But rightwing teacher who posed questions was fired
Tevye ,   Chelm   (01.22.14)
When asking questions about teaching Rabin "legacy"
5. baaaa Horowitz wants to turn the Israeli school
ghostq   (01.22.14)
system to communist education system, That is how ideology began. School need to be politic free zone, anyone with the right amount of HQ knows that, if the teacher wants he can express his opinions in public parks or in the street, while he is at school he should avoyed it like any other working places.
6. Teacher encouraging breaking law
Dmitry ,   Israel   (01.22.14)
Sorry, but encouraging people not to go to the army is an opinion in the US where it is voluntary. In Israel, which is more patriotic probably (and that can be argued in class) the army is a place for which all Jews are drafted. Encouraging kids to hate it and not go there is telling them to break the law and go to jail. A teacher should most definitely be fired for that as it goes beyond 'civics' and is in fact, a very uncivil thing to do. Why don't you get that? Does Meretz not support the draft? If so, you are a foolish party with the region burning around us and Israel being involved in wars against Arabs every decade.
7. What a hypocrite
David ,   On this planet   (01.22.14)
Yesterday he called on the Kenesett to fire Bennett on what he said about a Palestinian state. You can't have it just your way. Just looking at you a see hate and racism get over it
8. An apology is due
(01.22.14)
First, Meretz spearheaded firing a teacher who wanted to teach a more historical and nuanced view of Itzhak Rabin than the Meretz narrative. Meretz must first publically apologize to the victimized teacher Second, the Tivon teacher we are discussing did not insult the IDF. He simply said "IDF is not the most moral army". His failure was that he left it at an ad hominem attack, without explaining which army is more moral and why. Third, the reason to fire the teacher is because he taught ethnic cleansing and racism are legitimate viewpoints.
9. Ben Gurion University
yenta ,   kasrilovka   (01.22.14)
Ben Gurion University had no problem to fire areligious teacher who wasnt politically correct enough about homosexual couples with kids What about him Horovitz?.
10. education is supposed to be
frank ,   rehovot   (01.22.14)
non-biased and non-political. Is the teacher so insecure that he has to inflict his opinions on youth? Doesn't he believe that education is something that continues a lifetime? Interesting but only the left thinks they have an obligation to educate the youth in only one direction. To me that simply proves the weakness of their argument....
11. Indroctination OK?
Igor ,   Germany   (01.22.14)
So, if a teacher lectured that Shoah never happened and that Jews rule the world, it would be OK? Typical leftie: "Freedom of speech is my freedom to say whatever I want. It does not apply to you." That's exactly opposite of democracy.
12. Dmitri
Reuven ,   Netanya   (01.22.14)
Let's fire all the heads of yeshiva's and rabbi's too, take away their allowances as they do nothing else than telling their followers/students to disobey the laws of Israel.
13. Fascism rears its ugly head.
michael Pielet ,   israel   (01.22.14)
Of course he should be fired. Political opinions have no place in a classroom with impressionable children.
14. The MK nailed it - excellent defense of an open society
Avramele   (01.22.14)
1. A society that solves it's problems with words and not guns is a healthy society. 2. Teens are old enough to engage in rational political discourse without being brainwashed. 3. A classroom teacher has a right to an opinion in class AND an obligation to facilitate an informed, respectful and open discussion. She must give the message that reason rules, unsubstantiated by facts or logic arguments are worthless and epithets are for football stadiums, ynet talkbacks and Knesset backbenchers. 4. Neither a teacher nor a student who follow the rules of respectful classroom debate should ever fear retribution.
15. #12 Reuven
(01.22.14)
Can you point to one instance where a Yeshiva head or rabbi called for disobeying the law and wasn't punished? If it is so common, why is it the religious far outnumber any other group in serving in the IDF, especially as officers?
16. pathetic treasonous israeli
geroge   (01.22.14)
open discussion yes, arguing against serving in the idf another story.Who is to defend israel when rockets fly in from hezbollah. Certainly not the nina's, the gutless beilinists and barnea's whose cynicism is legendary and whose cowardice is visible from afar.
17. What rubbish.
Ira G.   (01.22.14)
Israel is literally at war with quite a few countries and terrorist groups. With that as a background we are probably the most open and free society known to man in a war time environment. As Barak once said: "This is not Ohio!" We are in one of the most bloodthirsty arenas in the world. We have witnessed our enemies ripping organs out of bodies and eating them. I'm not making this up, just research it. We should not tolerate people that cross the line and encourage non-defensive behavior.
18. #15 You must've been sleeping this year
Sam ,   PT   (01.22.14)
Every haredi Rabbi and head of haredi yeshivos instructed their students not to enlist in the IDF. Not one of Rabbi was punished.
19. not free speech issue. fire him now. he and his supporters
ralph   (01.22.14)
are wrong. naive wrong stupid empty arguments presented for not firing him. typical empty headed arguments by leftists.
20. #14. your point 3 is wrong. and rest are fluff.
ralph   (01.22.14)
21. Leftist should be fired
Bill Stein ,   USA   (01.22.14)
Remember a teacher was fired for questioning Rabins legacy a far less serious office than this leftist teacher where was Meretz then
22. Leftist' teacher
Ceaser ,   Ariel, Israel   (01.22.14)
Fire Him! Do it Now!
23. #14 agreed
(01.22.14)
You are right on the money: there should be respectful and open discussion. Did the teacher give an example of an army more moral than the IDF? NO, he simply condemned the IDF without discussion. Worse, the teacher proudly said that he thinks Israel should be replaced with "Palestine". This teacher is a racist (he thinks Jews should not be allowed self-determination like other humans) and supports ethnic-cleansing and apartheid (official policies of both PLO and Hamas). This teacher has no place in Israel.
24. teachers have every right to voice political opinions
zionist forever   (01.22.14)
Notzan Horowitz was once leader of Meretz and was a candidate at the Tel Aviv mayoral elections but he doesn't know its actually illegal to preach politics in schools as it should be. Teachers are there to teach and be role models to the young who may not yet full understand the facts, cannot have open minded children being told by their teacher what political policies are right or wrong, thats not education its an attempt to brainwash. Politics belongs at home never in the classroom. The only thing I agree with Horowitz over is the teacher should not be fired because don't want him being turned into a martyr. Give him a warning the whole matter will be forgotten but fire him and teachers will probably strike demand his reinstatement and the left will us him as an icon on election day.
25. Level of thickness
ky   (01.22.14)
of posters who want him sacked must be 10 out of 10. You cannot silence opinion. Even if it is a schoolteacher. Hopefully anyone who is in education will come across differing opinion, it is part of learning. In fact the left/right balance in each and every nation is always swinging one way or the other depending on the issues at stake at the time.. For example trade unions were at one time banned yet they are now an established factor in a democratic society. This teacher opinions does not threaten the existence of Israel but rather encourages it by posing alternatives in which the state can survive when faced with problems that cannot be overcome by empty rhetoric.
26. If he was a REAL teacher...
M. Davison ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (01.22.14)
He would have arranged a debate in class, with more than his own views presented in authoritarian, lecture-style sermons. No teacher working in a public school and receiving a salary from public money should be allowed to advise students to break the laws of the land. Private school teachers doing this against the political opinions of the majority of students' parents would find himself out of a job almost immediately. That an MK defends such unethical behavior by a teacher is totally unacceptable.
27. He must je expelled at once !
trump   (01.22.14)
Nanterre université in Paris will hire him on thé spot with such brillant priors...
28. Horowitz contradicts himself
zionist forever   (01.22.14)
EACH ONE OF US SHOULD HAVE AN OPINION ON WHATS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD AROUND US. Basically we should all think for ourselves and form our own opinions. AND DEFAINTLY A PERSON WHO WANTS TO EDUCATE AND DESIGN THE NEXT GENERATION IN THIS CASE A TEACHER. We should have teachers teaching politics so they can help design the next generation to think like they do. Horowitz contradicts himself because on one hand he wants us all to have our own political opinions but on the other he believes teachers should teach the kids politics because they are the ones with the responsibility of designing the next generation. Teaching the next generation to share the political opinions that the teacher. Horowitz is another poor example of the far left who believe they know better than everybody else and their solutions should be forced onto everybody else for their own good.
29. Since Hotovitz is a member of a Radical Left Wing party -
Dvir ,   Ariel, Israel   (01.22.14)
"educating" the kids this way promotes his political agenda and self interest. To remind you, the Nazis did the same before WW2 with the youth camps and nowdays, Hשmas and the Palestinian Authority do the same!! Since Meretz object the principle of the FULL Israel as a Jewish state, they keep walking on the age of legality and becoming more and more aggressive and violent. This is one reason why this opinion doesn't appear on the Hebrew version of Y-net. I personally think that Meretz and it's members should be taken outlaw .
30. Teach to think and analyse but not opinion
Harry ,   Haifa, Israel.   (01.22.14)
Teachers from govt sponsored schools should not express their personal views on political issues. They should organise a debate or present the many sides of the issues/issues and leave it to the students to form their own opinions. In any event their ideas will change over the years but the methods used to reach a decision will not.
