When I was a student they taught us what was wrong and what was right regarding many things but not regarding politics. And that was in a third world country and of course not a country in war like we are here. I am sure Mr. Piron that 90% of the parents wouldn't like their children to learn this teacher's political ideas that are shared by no more than 7% of the population.

3. He's not being fired ....

.... on ideological grounds. He's being fired because he far exceeded his purview. His job is to teach students HOW to think; not WHAT to think. If he wants to teach someone WHAT to think, let him go teach in Jenin or Ramallah. The indoctrination -- oops, sorry, educational -- system there will suit him down to the ground.
4. Would Piron have the courage to say this

had the teacher been religious/haredi/rightist?

his opinion doesnt need to be outspoken in a classroom , he is free outside but the parents need to know what s happen in the classroom; the education system must have a main direction for the teachers, if one doesn t agree he must leave and teach his politics for guys according to him

Firing somebody on ideological grounds is wrong and the school screwed up but there is no place for politics in the classroom. Have debates but the teacher must stay out of the debate just steer it to make sure everybody gets to put their point across and makes class debate possible. The teacher should listen to what students think and why but not tell the students what their personal ideology is. They certainly have no business encouraging drat dodging and apparently this teacher was praising the draft dodgers. When the teacher was reported by the student then the principle should have told the teacher there were complaints and told him just no more personal political opinions in class. The teacher would have either stop preaching politics and it would have gone no further or if they continued the principle could say I did warn him but he ignored the warning so I fired him, do that and the teacher would have never become a symbol of all thats wrong with the right.

in schools is very good , but a teacher must NEVER present his own ideas. All he should be allowed to do is present all the differing opinions and let the students decide for themselves. If he fails to do this, one warning is enough. A repeated breach would lead to his firing. Its that simple, for me at least.
