It does not have anything to do with freedom, democracy, or anything else. It never did. $3,500 is a princely sum in both the Sudan and Eritrea, plus they get to take their Western clothes, iPhones, iPads, tablets, notebooks and mobile phones with them.
I'll bet you anything that they will be taken a great many mobile phones with them -- where they will promptly sell them for thousands more than they are worth.
Yeah. Freedom and democracy.
$3,500 and the opportunity to rip off hundreds of one's own countrymen.
In fear for their lives? Not from the government -- but they probably will need to be really careful about whom they charge exorbitant prices for a mobile phone or Nike sneakers!
