1. We don't need their compensation, they don't need our Land!
tom ,   tel aviv   (02.01.14)
Somebody has to stop this madness and do it NOW!
2. Total rubbbish.
Ira G.   (02.01.14)
The Jews of Morocco did not, for the most part, come to Israel become of a Zionist dream. The ones that came here were mostly in need of social services. Their brothers and sisters that had at least a 5th grade education or $20 in their pockets choose Canada and France. Hashomer pleaded with Ben Gurion to keep them out, not become of any ethnic hatred, but because they opposed bringing Jews without the proper credentials to Israel. They opposed an open door policy for. survivors of the holocaust for the same reason. Does our professor think that Jews from Arab countries fled by coincidence at the same time, or was it actually after violent riots that endangered their lives?
3. a question.
lola ,   australia   (02.01.14)
who will be paying this compensation? because the land holding held by dispossessed Jews - well documented as they are - are hugely in excess of any claims made by Palestinians. I believe 4 times the area of Israel. So if Arab countries are going to be expected to stump up, you can expect the Arab states to torpedo the talks faster than anybody. is the US going to pay? I think not. LOL
4. There were Jews in East Jerusalem ,Hevron
Rod ,   Fargo N.Dakota   (02.01.14)
and even Gaza that lived their for thousands of yrs. They were killed and and and thrown out.If millions of muslims reside in Israel and have their fundamentalist party Jews can live in Judea &Samaria Are the Jews insane? All the muslims do is demand and demand. Any self respecting people would tell the muslims take a walk
5. Anyone who hesitates about that issue...

... must watch "The forgotten refugees" on youtube. It is absolutely heartbreaking.
6. Arab Refugees Blocked Jewish Rescue
Zechariah   (02.01.14)
The Arab Refugees as a whole blocked Jewish escape from Genocide and the Jewish Right of return to their ancient Holy Land under a League of Nations Mandate .it started in 1882 Intesified in 1920 and exploded into a massive Revolt in 1936.So who deserves compensation .
7. Mutual compensation
Avi   (02.01.14)
Any compensation agreed upon that is to be given to Palestinians is to be deducted from compensation to middle eastern Jews. As the narrative is whether willingly or by force, around 700,000 Palestinians fled what is now Israel. The arab states however banished all Jews from their territories and refused to allow them to take any of their property. They also numbered between 600,000 to 800,000. I haven't heard of the idea that all those Jews came for the zionist dream. It's a known fact they're first and foremost refugees driven from their homes with land alone that was greater than 6 times the size of Israel. Any compensation must be tied to the peace negotiations for two main reasons: 1) It was the arabs who tied these issues together by going to war against Israel several times, thus turning it into an Israeli - Arab conflict, not Israeli - Palestinian conflict, with the latter only showing up after 1967. 2) There is no special UN body just for Middle Eastern Jews. Israel doesn't help spread their voice to the world. Very few in the world probably know there were so many refugees. Arab states have no reason to compensate those Jews for peace with Israel as a stand alone issue. Iraq alone would refuse since it would cripple its economy, and give money to "the heretical jews who are our enemies". Peace with the palestinians isn't going to change that perspective for them. If we want any justice we need leverage, which can be found in the greater deal of the peace treaty with the Palestinians which is also a peace treaty with all arab states.
8. The learned Professor forgets is that Israel did not expel
Eric ,   Tel Aviv & NYC   (02.01.14)
The truth of the issue is more complex than Prof. Yehuda Shenhav says. Jews were forcibly expelled from Arab countries under fear of death. They were not called refugees by the UN even though they were by definition refugees fleeing for their lives. Arabs were encouraged to flee the new Israel by their Arab brothers who were planning to attack Israel and kill it before it was really formed. They were defined as refugees to the point that they are the only group in the world that can "inherit" refugee status. So, no the two are not the same. The Palestinians have been milking this injustice and inconsistent classification for years. So this is a small way to make amends for the world's past mistakes to the real refugees.

N.L.Katz ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (02.01.14)
refugees, all over the world, on every single continent but Antarctica. It is high time the Arabs who fled their homes and property and crossed into enemy territory to join the people who initiated the war in question, were settled where they are. Jews, expelled in much larger numbers from Arab countries, found their home and absorbed in tiny Israel. Surely, the huge Arab world can absorb, if it only wanted, those Arabs who fled Israel. Any attempt to perpetuate this subject is designed for political expediency and not in order to resolve a humanitarian predicament.
11. WHY ???
jo ,   paris   (02.01.14)
Part of my familie flied away from algeria and from tunisia, and NO they had no other chance. Somes stayed in Algeria and died !! That is the truth story. A big part of my family went in france, an a little in Israel. They left and nothing left in algeria or tunisia. all their goods, even their cimetery were distroyed. Nobody cares, and remember that there were some jews in algeria, except jews themselves. Jews, Israelis .... stop beeing fulish, nobody will defend jew people except jewish people.
12. Compensation 4 Refugees
Kevin J Lee ,   Barrhead/UK   (02.01.14)
Surely the 2 Peoples cant be compared, the Palestinians left Israel prior to 1948 War, at the behest of the Arab Governments, before their Armies invaded ! so the Palestinians should be viewed as taking sides by their actions (Against Israel).
13. What is Shenhav Smoking
Avi ,   USA   (02.01.14)
Coming from a Jewish Iraqi background I can only tell you that I have never met anyone of these refugees that has Shenhav's opinion. In fact, we view the exodus of the Jews from Arab lands as ethnic cleansing. His opinion is very foolish and he is very misinformed.
14. Are all professors stupid
David ,   On this planet   (02.01.14)
Oh yeah, Since 1948 the Jews living in Arab countries were treated like kings, That's why they came to Israel to be treated like second class citizens. Keep dreaming , you live in lala land and your brain is over worked
15. Millions of ethnic Germans expelled following WWII
Steve   (02.01.14)
Millions of ethnic Germans were forcibly expelled from Yugoslavia, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, etc. after the second world war. Like the Arabs and the Palestinians, Germany was the aggressor. Were any of these German refugees offered compensation? No, I do not believe they were offered compensation. Israel reluctantly accepted the November 1947 UN partition plan. The Arabs opted for wars of annihilation.

humans, Arabs and Jews alike, to flee, and now they want money for their deeds? They ought to address their complaints to their own leaders and not to the international community or to the Jews.

21. Nonsense
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (02.01.14)
Why a Jew left any country in history is usually because they were forced by racism. That they chose to come to Israel is because of Zionism regardless of their country of origin.
