Civilian national service for the haredi is a better solution than fighting a loosing battle to getting them into the army. National service is supposed to be about providing a useful role for the country not punishment and if a civilian service will give the haredi a useful role then it should be an option. With civilian national service they can learn employment skills and that should be the priority when dealing with the haredi not just putting them into uniforms A civilian national service could also be used for non haredi who do not qualify for military service like for medical grounds, the Tel Aviv draft dodgers etc Time to look at national service as providing a useful role not churning out soldiers. For Lapid & co its not about providing a service its spite and getting them out of the yeshiva the idea of sharing the burden is the political excuse to justify his demands and gain support.
