2. State vs. territory is irrelevant since Pals reject peace.
Sam ,   Canada   (02.14.14)
When and if a peace deal is available Israelis will choose between territory and peace. It matters little now because Palestinians reject peace despite the hallucinations and imagination of liberal Jews that they really wish it. Jews will not be held hostage by any minority and if the opportunity for peace arises they will decide.
3. Reality
(02.14.14)
I am not sure if u realize that by giving away the West Bank, Israel will have given the Palestinians an opportunity to create Gaza 2.0 new and improved located in central Israel overlooking Israel highest density areas. Settlement enterprise? No. Saving the country from endless deadly missile attacks. Get real.
4. Arieli must be a son of Neville Chamberlin. No Jew has the

right to give Jewish land to terrorists in exchange for a fake peace.
5. It's time to move on from Ben-Gurion.
Steve Klein   (02.14.14)
Israel was comparatively weak in the days of the 1937 British partition plan and the 1947 UN partition plan. Not so today. The Zionists took what they could get from the great powers back then, hoping for a better outcome later. As it turned out, from 1937 to 1947 Israel was granted more land, more holy sites. Even if David Ben-Gurion in his later years was willing to give up what Israel captured in wars of self-defense (contrary to his earlier opinions), that does not make it right. What Israel captured in her wars of self-defense belongs to Israel. It should not be given up like Israel gave up Gaza. Bayit Yehudi is right. What Israel has re-acquired by wars not of her choosing belongs to Israel.
6. Does Israel want to live in aushvits borders
Nachman   (02.14.14)
As Aba Eban coined the 67 Borders. The west bank is a buffer between us and the palestenians. If we ever do this suicide move of going to 67 borders The entire Israel the people Industry and the air ports are within range of direct hits by missiles from the Palestinian terrorist. It seems that the philosophical left will only learn from hard experience. But who knows if it wont be to late to save the situation. Will Shaul address the security situation which is real and not babble about his Zionist crap.
7. The Zionists created the State
paulD ,   Jerusalem   (02.14.14)
and the Zionists will destroy it. Zionism will die because it is another replacement theology. Jews are in Israel, because there is a G-d, and there is Torah. As this author's physic disconnect proves, once you step outside of that domain of reality, you enter into a pit of confusion, justifying any and all absurdity.
8. I can rent orbuy in Judea/Samaria for a fraction of the cost
Avi   (02.14.14)
Without incentives. Even throw in the cost of transportation, and it remains a fraction of the cost- without any other incentives. Fact is that the Jewish population continued to grow even when financial incentives were removed.
9. Early Zionism Secular Rationalist
Zechariah   (02.14.14)
The early Zionism from From the Rome and Jerusalem of ex assimilationist Hess to the auto emancipation of Pinskier was based on Humanities gravity like Orgaization into tribes then Nation States .The Intransience of Tribalism and Nationalism at that time before Marxist Internationalism Brought forces for Armed Jewish National State which genocidal Nazism proved Vital for Jewish Survival so Mad and Bad had Nazism become.
10. Excellent
Daniel   (02.14.14)
Good column by a patriotic Israeli who served his country. Now we just wait for the fanatic fringe who never even served Israel to start their usual attacks. Luckily they are just that, a fringe. Most Israelis want peace.
11. The Truth However Is
Ariel ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim   (02.14.14)
B"H - The truth however is that Mr. Bennet operates within the democratic framework, i.e. got himself elected and his party has an electoral weight, whereas the author of this piece, Colonel (res.) Shaul Arieli operates outside of and indeed against the democratic framework, in as much as the "Council for Peace and Security" is nothing more than a great sounding EU funded leftist thinkers' club and the also great sounding "Geneva Initiative" is just an unofficial gathering of bigheads thinking of representing someone, other than themselves. With other words, the real bluff is where Mr. Arieli stands and it will indeed be exposed.

13. messianic
Nimrod Soll ,   Budd Lake   (02.14.14)
so the bayit yehudi is crazy for wanting to settle judea smaria, which is literally our living room. and david ben gurion who came all the way from russia to settle a piece of desert in the middle of nowhere because 2000 years ago his ancestors lived there is completely pragmatic......
14. The Messianic Redemption
Adam Neira ,   Di Zahav, Egypt   (02.14.14)
The correct model for the Holy Land is based on the divine concept of sovereignty. Let me explain... A child is born with an innate sense of right and wrong. It knows when its boundaries are violated. A child becomes an adult. An adult becomes a couple. A couple becomes a family. A family becomes a community. A community becomes a city. A city becomes a nation. A nation becomes the world. So think of the Haram al Sharif, Jerusalem, Holy Land, Middle East and World as series of concentric circles. The truth also is that we are all G-d's children. All behaviour is a result of mindset and setting, thus under the correct government all citizens/subjects are able to self actualize their potential. Another truth is that violence is not innate from birth. Thus taking the above points into consideration you are left with the conclusion that Judea and Samaria/The West Bank will be shared. The Jews will not kick all the Palestinians out, and the Palestinians will not kick all the Jews out. The key pieces of the Middle East jigsaw puzzle are : The Haram al Sharif/Noble Sanctuary; Jerusalem; Judea and Samaria/The West Bank; The State of Israel; Gaza; Egypt; Saudi Arabia; Jordan; Syria and Lebanon. The current GDP of these areas is approx. $1.6 Trillion. This can easily grow by 5% p.a. from 2016 onwards if the right moves are made. (It is an interconnected and interlocking puzzle, more like a Rubik's Cube than a Jigsaw Puzzle.) The true redemption, i.e. counter-balancing of the land, comes with truth, justice and co-operation not force.
15. G-d gave us this land for a holy purpose, NOT Europeans.....
Joshua ,   Israel   (02.14.14)
We the religious Zionists will be the ONLY people left standing when all of the phony Jews disappear (out of fear when Iran has its way). Then Israel will become a kingdom of priests, a HOLY NATION. And will cease to be another secular nation run by Jews. That's just a fact.
16. Religious Zionism and Secular Zionism
David ,   Maerkaz Shapira,   (02.14.14)
Colonel Arieli is sadly informed about Religious Zionism and also About Ben Gurion, Once when BG was traveling to Elat he asked a Colonel how he would capture the mountains of Moab to their East, and the Colonel began to describe the operation, then he stopped and asked, "do you want to conquer them", and BG responded, "me no, but someday you will." BG viewed all of the territorial concessions as temporary tactical moves in order to achieve the final goal, Jewish rule over all of the historic land of Israel.
17. What you didn't say is
JDK ,   NYC USA   (02.14.14)
That the real problem to achieve any peace is the fact there is nobody serious to make it with our signing it on the other side. Our wishes for peace are not enough of a reason to sign it. The biggest proof that there is nobody on the other side to talk to, is the fact that Hamas took over Gaza after they were handed it on a silver platter. Knowing that, it doesn't make sense to make peace even if it can be proven thatthere is anybody serious on the other side. The all thing is wishful dreaming, and putting the lives of millions of our brothers and sisters in Israel in gave danger. Stop playing with Jewish lives. This madnes of even considering a Palestinian state needs to stop.
18. Avoiding history again.
(02.14.14)
"...even if it is the fruit of arbitrary colonial decisions...." What a baldface red herring. The land my dear writer, was payment for acts of war, for the express purpose of driving out or killing every Israeli in 1967.
19. Delusional
Avi   (02.14.14)
It is just sad to see self hatred rearing its ugly head. You should learn to love your nation more
20. The rationale is spiritual & not rational & not economic.

21. Excellent statement of Zionist realism
Avramele   (02.14.14)
Years ago at the beginning of the present madness an officer in the IDF's education corps described gush emunim as Cannaanim manichei tefilin - cannanites wearing tefilin. How true, even more so today. Y"B is a cult of land worshipping idolators.
22. What are you afraid of, Shaul?
Israeli 2   (02.14.14)
Even if what you say is true about Habait Hayehudi, the fact is that the sooner Israel begins to annex all the territories, the better. There will be peace the moment the so called Palis return to Jordan. There will be peace soon, the moment a real Israeli leader with a real Jewish mind leads Israel and not pretend that he likes to make peace and have a 2 state solution. Leave the peace process immediately and start annexing and work for returning Abbas and his gangsters to Jordan.
23. Outsville
dave ,   safet israel   (02.14.14)
The Lubavitcher Rebbe said 45 years ago "give the arabs $20 and a one-way bus ticket and they'd be glad to leave". Today it will cost a bit more. The moron leftists can leave with them.
24. A Loud Handful
rami ,   israel   (02.14.14)
The public never accepted the Geneva Initiative, which Shaul Arieli apparently initiated. The simple reason is that it only reflects Palestinian interests and disregards what mainstream Israel is looking for. We all know that Abbas is not supported by his own people, his tenure finished years ago and Hamas is waiting for him to fall only to take over the territories and rage yet another devastating war on Israel. People like Arieli wont let the facts change their direction and will always look to distinguish the "Settlers" as a Loud, Handful minority, thus trying to de-legitimize any opinion other than their own. In Arieli's view, people who oppose his opinion "harm the vital interests" of Israel. So who, exactly, is the small handful of people with messianic beliefs?
25. AriEli, the self anointed voice of the redundant designation
Kerwood Derby ,   Frostbite Falls, MN   (02.14.14)
of Zionism (as if it is some type of man-made "ism", State imposed replacement theology for that which defined mitzvot ha eretz!) ignores that BG and CW were grasping for some sort of legitimacy in the eyes of the world and bit the crumb rather than claiming their morasha. The still-born partition plan that AriEli continues to squeeze the death out of will only delegitimize your claim to the land of your own name in the eyes of the world and not only embolden like minded self-haters, but also those that come to kill you. It emboldens the genocidal, mass murdering extortionists that he nor those he took orders from ever sought to remove. He never removed the threat to those he is sworn to protect and he still refuses to endorse common sense that the genocidal mass-murderers should have their right of return enforced back to the homicidal Hamite peninsular homeland of their own name. This would be human so you won't have to kill them when they can't control their homicidal impulses and come to kill you again. AriEli and the rest of those who refuse to remove the threat they are sworn to remove appear to love the game whack-a-mole rather than peace in the absence of those that come to kill those they are sworn to protect.
26. someone give this man a history lesson
Jeff ,   ranaana   (02.14.14)
Sorry Shaul, Ben-Gurion never accepted the specifics of the partition plan and embraced only those parts he agreed with, i.e. Israeli statehood. He made that abundantly clear when during the war he conquered far more area than was allotted to Israel in the partition plan, and steadfastly refused entreaties by the US to return territory not given by partition.

29. Confused focus
Hmm. ,   Chicago   (02.14.14)
This article is wide of the mark. Israel is a tiny country with no strategic depth. On the other hand, it has a lot of enemies. For Israel to have a chance at surviving, it must retain control of the Jordan River valley. Really doesn't have much to do with religious convictions.
30. Response to Article
Asher Najer ,   USA   (02.14.14)
Mr.Arieli appears to glorify the secular Zionists of Herzl, Weizman & Ben Gurion as the creators of the movement of Zion. Perhaps he did not get the memo, but the aspirations and dreams of the Jewish people for a homeland in the land of Zion stems back more then 2000 years. His concept of Zion stem back 100 years of empty socialist ideology which propagated lost generations of Jewish excellence in economics, national defense, political clarity and historical identity. The forefathers of the current secular Zionism, which is worshipped today by the religion of cronyism, would turn in their grave if they could witness the bastardized form of Judaism they had passed on to their great grand children. These inheritors of false Zionism are appeasers who would acquiesce the land of their forefathers for an illusion called "peace." The land they claim as a Devine inheritance which taxes away security and world legitimacy, is the very same land that their ancestors died for over 2000 years. Zionism is not a late 19th century dream. It's the dream of all connected Jews to live in their land as promised by God. Its not the land that can be sliced and diced into pieces by modern political ideologues who want to define security for the Jewish people. The Land of Israel is only secure as a whole, but vulnerable when its divided. That is the truth about Zionism. When men of secular emptiness rely on themselves to believe in their own theories about peace and war, then they will only fail. Bennett's ideology is not a belief in men's emptiness, its the belief of God and the full meaning of Zionism as our forefathers fought and died. What they had passed down through the centuries, is being discounted by the secular leftists into their realm of insignificance.
