Putin wanted to work with the US and Obama against their common enemy, radical Islam. When Obama said he wanted to protect innocents in Libya, Putin supported him. Why shouldn't Putin believe that the coup in Ukraine wasn't instigated by Obama to prevent Russian support for Assad?

Russia is using the situation as an excuse to annex foreign land and has nothing to do with protecting its citizens. If anything, russia is endangering the lives of its citizens buy doing what it is doing.

The UN doesnt have any obligation to protect anyone anywhere. It is not a world government. Its authority is supposedly moral and basically provides a forum where ambassadors can speak with each other and make deals.
