1. Very good article
Akiva ,   NYC   (03.07.14)
Technology is important for making life easier. Zomet deserves a lot of credit. Yasher Ko'ach!
2. what 1 said true that! ;-)

3. reconciling two different worlds
iselin ,   oslo   (03.08.14)
I got censored last time. Let's see if I can do this better. It is rather weird to reconcile a fundamentalist old-world lifestyle by using the most modern apps available. Ironic, isn't it? Is Hashem laughing?
4. To #3
Avi ,   London, UK   (03.08.14)
You don't have to be "fundementalist" or "old world" to observe shabbat.
5. What does this mean?
A_Jew ,   Tel Aviv   (03.08.14)
What does this mean? - "The scientists here, all Orthodox Jews, have large black skullcaps, with ritual fringes hanging out."
6. Laws not set in democracy are not laws.
Michael ,   California, USA   (03.08.14)
Such "laws" don't oblige intelligent people. Ignore them.
7. to #4 it depends upon how
iselin ,   oslo   (03.08.14)
There are many ways to observe the sabbath - a day off work is all most of us need, and it doesn't have to be on the literal sabbath itself. A personal sabbath, if you will. If you use modern technology to bypass or avoid doing "normal" daily things, like cooking, turning on lights, riding on an elevator, using an electric scooter, then you are still fundamentalist and old world, in spite of the use of technology. It's just rather strange to justify an archaic lifestyle by using modern means. By doing it that way, you practice sabbath lite, the effect but not the effort, which takes planning and work.
8. iselin: speaking for others ?
jdc   (03.09.14)
"a day off work work is what most of us need". Clearly there are people who define their needs differently. There are a great many very traditional Jews who are happy. Does that bother you ? Rather than debate your choice of "fundamentalist" to attack Jewish tradition, there is a more basic issue: You are free to do as you please but why criticize others who choose otherwise ? Does apostasy make you feel lonely ?

Now you are speaking for others. No, apostasy does not make me feel lonely, because I am in good company. Christians and Jews are turning away from religion daily and joining the real world. We have seen that the emperor wears no clothes (if you don't get that, read H.C.Andersen's story, "The Emperor's New Clothes).
10. Iselin: well, nobody is stopping you.
jdc   (03.09.14)
You must be lonely. Otherwise why justify yourself to other Jews ? This is entirely unsolicited.
11. 21 Century - ;) ,...
split ,   US   (03.09.14)
This so called 'Jewish law' is an idiocy relict invented by power hungry rebes to control their brain dead flocks centuries before any concept of today's advancements was born or possible to predict ,... I bet her rebe would rather see her bare foot in the kitchen 'producing' babies and enlarging his herd, milking the taxpayer and sharing with him than living an independent productive life ,... People are dying because they can't push the traffic button when they cross the street ,...

I don't have to justify a thing. You who choose to use 21st century apps to live an archaic lifestyle need to make excuses for it. Who can invent something to make pretending to live in Poland 300 years ago easier? But hey, as long as you stay in Israel or maybe live in Monsey or one of those other towns where the superduper religious are in the majority, you can keep your blinders on.
13. iselin: au contraire
jdc   (03.10.14)
You are being presumptuous. I live in neither of those. Many outside of various enclaves lead their lives as they see fit. Plenty have an excellent secular education and that does not interfere with their choice to lead an observant lifestyle. Some have even been secular and have become observant. If you are so confidant of being on the right side of history, why debate ? Just wait a little :) I would have thought you would be happy in your secular paradise and would not bother with backward lot wallowing in the dark ages. Yet something brings you back demanding the observant explain themselves. Why ?
