1. Dr. Eldan:
Israeli 2   (03.15.14)
I will be circumcising my son in the morning of the eight day of his birth. Circumcision is a pact I have made with my G-d. Whatever you think or theorize will not stack up or measure up with the infinite wisdom of my G-d. Sorry to make you lose.
2. Gibberish
David ,   New York   (03.15.14)
Article makes no sense. If the reason secular Israelis do a bris is that it reduces their fear, then why don't Catholics do it? Perhaps the real reason is that, despite their secular drivel that emanates from their mouths, deep down, they still feel part of the Jewish people and the bris (as well as the Seder and Tom kipper) are basic elements of being a Jew
3. The Fear Behind cicumcision
Henry ,   Manila   (03.15.14)
The author is simply an irrational lawyer, a crazy bumbler and a Bible ignorant judgmental person like many of us in the business. Too bad we have just too people like him in the world today.
4. Irony atheism came safer Surgery
Zechariah   (03.15.14)
It's ironical that atheism and agnosticism came with Septic technique and cleanliness though the Jews were generally pretty hygienic before that with washing cleaning hands fresh water and the Mikveh rules .So nowadays tho there is fear medicine has made it safer .Futher there is the Shoah Pogrom consciousness a determination to Defiance because of the Past. And then medicine has arrived with another reason . The most common causes of bacterial infection in Children now vaccinated against lots of diseases is urinary tract infection.Circumcised boys are at clinically significant less Risk .The observation that Aids is at least half less easily transmitted means something .But the procedure sure is scary .
5. Not a barbaric act at all
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.15.14)
It makes the boy to be a member of the GREAT Jewish people . Fasting on Yom Kippour is a tradition for many seculars . The Pesach Seder is to remember the liberation of slavery . Brith Mila is against the boy's rights ?, he was not asked if he wanted to be born either
6. how can an intelligent man write such dribble?!
(03.15.14)
Circumcision is good for the Jews! and irrespective of whatever adjective is placed in front of the word Jew, we all realize that it is the noun Jew which is most important.
7. AAP and circumcision
Zvi Zaks ,   San Jose, California   (03.15.14)
Dr. Eldan may consider the idea that circumcision has medical benefits ridiculous, but the American Academy of Pediatrics disagrees. "Evaluation of current evidence indicates that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks; " http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/early/2012/08/22/peds.2012-1990.abstract?sid=adf5d5c7-b916-43ca-a0cb-662b34e9587d I think the AAP is more reliable.
8. circumcision
kiddoc ,   CT, USA   (03.15.14)
Circumcision DOES have significant, legitimate health benefits. It probably began in order to prevent balanitis (irritation under the foreskin, which happens if sand, from a hamsin, gets in there). It also prevents urinary tract infection, and cancer of the penis. In the newborn period, it can be done in under 90 seconds, with effective local anesthesia, and takes less than two weeks to heal up. We make medical decisions all the time for our children - why should circumcision be any different?
9. And he has a Ph.D.? Another Antiochus!
Cowboy Joe ,   Calgary, Canada   (03.15.14)
10. Flying Up Your Own Tuchas
A Simple Jew ,   Maale Adumim   (03.15.14)
This article is psychobabble. Jews circumcise because is a core commandment of our religion, and a requirement to entry into the Jewish people. There may be medical advantages, but that is not why we do it.
11. Israeli students deserve competent professors
Mordechai   (03.15.14)
Clearly the professor is unqualified to do much more than clean the toilets at a university. He certainly shouldn't be teaching there.
12. Most to fear ,is to be rejected by
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (03.15.14)
Jewish women and to have goyish children.
13. #8 Totally agree
(03.15.14)
I'm not Jewish (or Muslim), but when I have a son I'll likely have him circumcised due to the medical benefits. People with anti-circumcision agenda also claims it doesn't improve hygiene, yet studies show that atleast 1/4 of uncircumcised men have inferior genital hygiene compared to only a few percent among circumcised men. But the most beneficial aspect is the protection against urinary tract infections and STDs.
14. Ora , fine to see you're OK
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.16.14)
חג שמח
15. This is funny. Fear Bromkes is the best surgeon
Miron ,   USA   (03.16.14)
does circumcision in NY.
16. Interesting theory but out of proportion
Shachar ,   Eilat   (03.16.14)
I got circumcised as an adult, it's no big deal. Choosing which school or kindergarten your children go to will impact their lives a thousand more than this very minor cosmetic surgery. Rites and rituals are what makes a group of people distinctive and causes them to work together. However irrational the rituals are, the ability to work together as a group is the number one survival skill for humans.
17. 14Thanks Charles,fine to see from ..
ORA ,   JERUSALEM   (03.16.14)
you committed comments about circumcision. And now,a "glasele wein" to Purim Sameah and to your health,Charles.
18. Ora , You know my ideas about Brith Mila
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (03.16.14)
They are "secular" ones but "Jewish" Not more as "a glesele" , otherwise you will agree with ALL my ideas !
19. Rubbish!
Rivkah F. ,   Jerusalem   (03.17.14)
No one forces anyone to circumcise their babies. Even the courts intervened to prevent forcible circumcision in a controversial divorce case. Most Israeli Jews, like me, had their sons (& grandsons) circumcised in a brit milah ceremony because that is what Jews have done for generations. We also get married in a Jewish ceremony by a rabbi, eat matza on Passover, fast on Yom Kippur and light candles on Friday night, among other practices. That is what Jews do. We do not need garbled, dime-store professors analyze what is simply our tradition and our way of life. It is in our DNA. Accept it or reject it. But do not annoy us with convoluted theories about why we do things.
20. The fear behind circumcision
George Weiss ,   Teaneck, USA   (03.16.14)
What are you trying to say? Your article is full of conjecture and tou offer no proof, just a silly hypothesis. It is unworthy of any academic.
21. Jewishly - yes, Medically -yes
Vered, Israel   (03.17.14)
How can this guy argue with the American Pediatrics Association AND the World Health Organization? Both say it prevents disease.
22. Nature decided on the foreskin. People mustn't intervene.
Michael ,   California, USA   (03.17.14)
