1. Peace in Ireland also took tens of YEARS
maurice clebert ,   israel   (03.31.14)
but i think you re fundamentally right, the PP (Peace Process) has become some kind of abstraction, a mental game, extracted of any reality. for my part, i would not cancel it temporarily, i would cancel it forever, and wait until something happens. in the end, nothing artificial will last forever.
2. Nice Idea But Also Won't Help
Rube Vogel ,   Jerusalem   (03.31.14)
As AB says, the people don't really expect the current peace process to succeed. In my case, I don't believe that Abbas (or the Palestinian People for that matter) is willing to confront and take responsibility for the Palestinian extremists. AB mentions Sadat's "success" but Abbas has no wish to share Sadat's fate.
3. Pals seek violence for attention of international community.
Sam ,   Canada   (03.31.14)
The Palestinians are still trying to make the case to the international community on why it should make Israel hand over the country to them. That's what they seek not Palestinian and Jewish states. They turn to violence for attention and that's why the US gets involved. As is, peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians will go nowhere.
4. Sad but true
larry ,   Northridge, usa   (03.31.14)
The author sadly but correctly hits the nail on the head. The only disagrrement I have with his analysis is that the precipitating crisis that ultimately brings peace can be non violent. It will take a decisive war to bring the palestinians to the realization that Israel must be accepted as permanent, with a resultant peace.
5. There are two real alternatives the the "peace process" as
N.L.Katz ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (03.31.14)
an entity: 1) The reliance on strictly the 1995 Interim Agreement which has been the basis for the governing of the disputed territories. In time, tinkering with the Interim Agreement for the sake of better managing the situation has been and will continue to be the way to deal with matters. 2) Resorting to the fundamental elements of international law related to the Arab Israeli conflict and the way to resolve it. Those elements are (a) San Remo conference decisions, 1920; (b) League of Nations decisions, 1922; (c) UN Charter, article 80, 1945. And, these to be implemented strictly based on UN Security Council Resolution, 242, 1967. The outcome would be an autonomous Arab entity in parts of Samaria, Judea, the Jordan Valley and Gaza whose citizens will be Jordanian citizens but who would be entitled to govern their lives within this autonomous area. Israel will retain those parts of the territories where Jews reside and those with vital security interest to the country.

7. the process and the obstacle to peace
tiki ,   belgium   (03.31.14)
The difference between peace with Egypt & Jordan is that it was based on peace with ligitemate countries & their leaders and not with a group of arabs who all of a sudden claim to be a people with a (stolen) country & history. The failure of the "peace process with the palestinians" is that it's based on lies & phantasy! The problem is that the world has been suckered into believing these lies (out of energy fear & no love lost on Jews)! One has to go back to the drawing board and start all over, but this time on the basis of facts! The average person has long understood that this farce is leading to nowhere, only the EU/US and the anti Jewish, International conspiracy called UN (+ all affiliates) cling on to it because of their anti Jewish agenda.
8. Peacesharade
albert snow ,   sweden   (03.31.14)
Peace have to start amongst people before it´ll be genuine. The obstacle now is that Abbas & co is not interested. If they were interested they would stop incitements and begin prepare the palestinians for a future living in Peace with jews and recognizing their state. But they are not. Their journalists is not even admitted to meet with israeli, their enemy, as they see it. Having a leadership with these views show they are not negotiating for peace but rather for continius struggle to conquere the jeiwsh state having jews expelled or killed and turn it to nother arab state.
9. #5 has not figured out yet that there is no such thing
spyguy ,   seattle usa   (03.31.14)
as "internationals law." What there is, are temporary agreements amongst nations which become null and void when one side decides they are null and void. This means Balfour, San Remo, any decision by the league of nations and even the UN charter are null and void in today's world, because a majority of the nations say they are. There is no "legal" basis for Israel, no matter how much Israelis want there to be one. Nations simply exist in whatever borders they have, until they no longer exist. In the last 10000 years lots of nations have come and gone and borders have changed (as they are with Russia as you read this). If you want a stable, peaceful future, Israel will have to negotiate directly with the Arabs and will have to give up lots of land, water, cash and apologies. You had better hurry though because the Arabs get stronger every day.
10. Also note the Arabs constantly come out with daily threats!
Riva ,   Israel   (03.31.14)
One of the biggest obstacles is that the Arabs don't stop threatening JEWS! they come out with how their Koran tells them to kill us! is there really any possibility they would change that is a peace treaty were made? i am sure they wouldn't so where would that leave Israel! And everyday, they are coming out with a new threat....is this the way "peace partners" who REALLY want peace speak? i think not! the bottom line, the current requirements of a peace process is simply asking Israel to commit sucicide! It's too dangerous to release Arab Terrorists! giving land to them presents many, many security problems not to mention what to do with all these thousands of displaced persons. this will create a refuggee problem much worse than the Arabs ever claim to have had. And i am sure many arabs would be miserable under their own rule because their leaders are extremely corrupt!
11. For once I agree with a left-wing intellectual
frauss ,   Jerusalem   (03.31.14)
At last someone has seen the light. I do take exception with his last paragraph. I do not think US withdrawal from the "peace process" will cause panic among Arabs and Israelis. I think it will be accepted and we will get on with our regular lives thereafter. And we might even get somewhere between ourselves if there are no outsiders meddling in our lives.
12. # 9 UN Charter, article 80, 1945 has enshrined the decisons
N.L.Katz ,   Qatzrin, Israel   (03.31.14)
of the League of Nations, 1922. And, since, to the best of my knowledge, the UN Charter has not been amended, article 80 and its meaning is very much part and parcel of international law. The essence of it is the partition of Palestine/Eretz Israel between Arabs and Jews. The Arabs have 77% of the whole, located between the Jordan River and the Arabian desert. The Jews, 23% of the whole, located between the Jordan River and the Med. Sea. This is practically the case today. All that the parties need do is accept this reality and learn to live with it. And, no, it doesn't mean the transfer of people, anywhere. It simply mean the Arab Palestine is on one side of the Jordan River and Jewish Eretz Israel on the other side, with civil and religious rights for all.
13. Number 5: These are indeed the only two options. Thanks.
Norman Dunn ,   Ireland   (03.31.14)
14. "Peace process" must stop
I. Barr ,   Michigan,USA   (03.31.14)
1. HAMAS COVENANT #11 Palestine is sacred Islamic land-WAQF consecrated for the use of Muslims only under Sharia law. Can anybody solve this problem? 2.The continuous meddling in Palestinian conflict with Israel by any "ugly Americans" who do not understand the history, culture and religions cannot mediate. 3. As long as the Palestinian teach their kids that Jihad is the way there cannot be peace. 4. Leaving Israel and Palestinian to settle without US, EU, UN meddling will bring peace faster though "Status quo" is no a bad solution for the time being until WAQF is solved. Many countries are in a status quo: Cyprus, Kashmir, Formosa.

1. When the lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to POSSESS IT, and shall CAST OUT many nations before thee . . . seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2. and when the Lord thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt SMITE THEM, then thou shalt UTTERLY DESTROY THEM; thou shalt MAKE NO COVENANT WITH THEM NOR SHOW MERCY UNTO THEM. Intelligensia Jews like A.B and his ilk, backslide historically on God's commandments, mouthing platitudes to our sworn enemies while living as ultra-liberal NON-Maccabees. AM YISRAEL CHAI!
18. US withdrawal followed by Israel annexing all necessary land
Philippe ,   Raanana   (04.01.14)
There is not a single chance a PA will agree to US-Europe withdrawal ; the US_EU provides the bread-butter-oxygen of the PA at a rate of 65 M$/ month.PA will do its utmost to keep some kind of illusory " process " alive even if they admit it's a phony game of posturing .On our side israel must play the same comedy along: But that does not stop us from building where we deem necessary and of monitoring PA covert terrorism effort.Only in case of external shock ( revolution In Amman ) Israel might have to cancel Oslo , and to annex all of area C.so AB Yehoshua wrote another illusory article, as usual

20. breakdown will only yield finger pointing
Bruce Ackman ,   richmond, va, usa   (04.01.14)
While I agree that it's time to throw up our hands and, for now, walk away from the peace process, all thi swill lead to will be finger pointing and the assignment of blame for who lead to the breakdown. I'm afraid that would be more important to the Palestinians than actually getting to peace
