1. A military without discipline is just a group of mercenaries
Gershon Reed ,   Be'er Sheva, Israel   (05.01.14)
Any soldier taking part in any sort of protest should be arrested and court martialed immediately. When I swore into the US Navy way back when, I voluntarily gave up my rights as an individual. We were not allowed to take part in protests, politics, give press interviews, etc. Maybe the IDF is different, but this is how it needs to be for a strong military. No individuals, just units.
2. soldier
miluimnik ,   bet shemesh, israel   (05.01.14)
the idf needs to stop sucking up to, and protecting, the provocateurs. in this case it was an error, but usually the idf command and gov't take the side of the provocateurs against the soldiers. this is not the first time this has happened. the protest of the soldiers is needed in order to save us israelis from the cravenness and irresponsibility of our own gov't. i say more power to them!
3. deterrence
(05.01.14)
The greatest loss of deterrence and morale happened when the IDF destroyed the career of Lt. Col. Eisner for defending himself against a professional rioter. Almost as bad was when the IDF, Barak and Netanyahu released the IHH terrorists who permanently crippled a Shayetet soldier, and instead of defending Shayetet crawled to Erdogan and begged to pay jiziya. If the IDF cared about deterrence in the wake of the Nahal soldier incident, the IDF should have made a clear announcement that the Nahal soldier would have been immune from prosecution if he shot the three people who clearly could have murdered or kidnapped him.
4. IDF is a people's army and its soldier have spoken out
daniel ,   TA - IL   (05.01.14)
That the left, including the top brass in the idf and shabac do not like what they hear is too bad. Start protecting our soldiers, I was one yesterday and my children will be tomorrow, against lunacy imposed by the selfserving leftwing crowds financed by the eu and other jewhaters! Please take note of this. Neither the arabs nor the other jewhaters can defeat us... however, internal fifth columns have caused the destruction of the temple and made all the amalek's efferts to destroy jews much, much easier (just think of people like kastner in hungary) The leftwing political elite is more concerned with the rights of professional jewhaters than the safety of the jews
5. What deterrence? It faded away long ago...
Smadar ,   Ariel, Israel   (05.01.14)
The mere fact that the three Palestinian teenagers in the video dare to harrass and shove around an armed IDF soldier without fear is proof enough that the IDF's deterrence is close to zero. And this event is not the exception, it's rather the rule. Similar scenes where the Palestinians harrass and mock IDF soldiers, attack jeeps and "pillboxes" and patrolling soldiers have become widespread in all of Judea and Samaria and in East Jerusalem. That has been going on for years.
6. Complete balderdash....
HIstory nut ,   Israel   (05.01.14)
This is complete puke. That soldier makes my family and everyone I have spoken with proud.
7. Or maybe the IDF should return to its roots...
William ,   Israel   (05.01.14)
as a formidible fighting force, protecting Israel and its citizens from enemies, and stop being led by the political careers of others including its own high command. I would challenge the author with a different perspective....if the Army refuses to protect and backup its own soldiers, making them too cautious to do their job when required, protection of the State will be in question let alone basic deterrence. We see various armies around the world facing the same dilemma, hanging its own soldiers out to dry, and most often perpetuated through policies driven by liberal elements.
8. deterrence??..we have none
JL   (05.01.14)
thats why they feel they can confront our soldiers in theyre face..even push and strike them.,how pitiful we are trying to convince the world we are so nice
9. No cocked weapons at the enemy gates?
Plexpr ,   Germany   (05.01.14)
"The Hebron incident in which Nahal fighter David Admov cocked his weapon in front of Palestinians was the result of a provocation" Even under the Eiffel Tower you can see sometimes soldiers in combat gear and machine guns ready to fire. impeding the scope of action of a soldier is counterproductive google foe "Eiffel Tower soldiers guns" and you will get tons of pics. I would never serve in an army that not let me cock my weapon if I am or feel in danger.
10. #2,3,4,5,6, wow, pretty much everybody!
Elan ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (05.02.14)
Do you all even know why he got removed from his unit? It has NOTHING to do with the incident with the Arab kids! This person has issues! He assaulted fellow soldiers,Threw a rock at his commander, THIS! THIS is why he got booted!!!!! This person is NOT fit to serve in a combat unit, at the very least not in Nahal. Yes, the army puts lots of restrictions on IDF soldiers, that other soldiers in other armies don't have to deal with. Are we proud of this person for wanting to be in a combat unit, and for his service up to now?, OH you bet we are! What he did to his fellow soldiers and commander, brought shame on himself and the IDF. THAT is why he was removed. I suggest you re-read the article, especially the second heading "Confusion and Bad Management"
11. facebook use
steve ,   netanya israel   (05.03.14)
Mr Ben Yishai wud be naive to imagine that the detractors to the state of Israel need a facebook posting to use against us. The citizens of Israel in particular the youth must be given a voice.Oue leaders are immune to the cries of the youth - a million people protesting on the streets of TA is an example. If Mr Yaalon can tell kerry what he thinks (fait accompli) I'm confident he will he will shortly make an honest move on behalf of our young soldiers. As for our detractors .......

peace talk failed without gun ..but w e all know who awne one here the soldier must not used any talk and he would not use his gun as part of the talk >> before 20 years my sister asked a soldier why he prevent her to pass through a special road he said -- god wants that and he smiled to her children . but in these 20 years palastinians have to asked more soldiers do not finde better than guns to reply them
13. Simple solution
sheik rattle & roll ,   USA   (05.03.14)
Give the soldiers a livable wage and make them accountable for there actions. A well compensated army of professional soldiers is far superior then an army of conscripts who can't wait to get out the day they arrived to perform there "national" service.
