1. Deterrence not achieved. Hamas is still firing rockets.
Sam ,   Canada   (08.03.14)
Looks like Bibi has declared victory and pulled out. There's a lot of destruction but Hamas cares more about lifting the blockade than destruction and there is no one to restrain them so Israel must restrain them.
2. "Longer window of security"?? - rockets are still coming !
barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (08.03.14)
3. rockets fired at Israel is not a victory
DOV ,   USA   (08.03.14)
Sounds like the government is content with the same situation before the escalation in rocket fire. I don't see an end game in this.
4. Following statement doesn't make sense
barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (08.03.14)
"Our working assumption is that they will try to renew digging," How does that help us in security?
5. Another comment I am dying to put down is this:
barbara ,   Haifa Israel   (08.03.14)
Could this IDF operation suddenly have stopped because Bibi's son got called for 'milieem' ?
6. Backward thinking
Rabbi Yakov Lazaros ,   USA   (08.03.14)
Go for the hamas leaders and take them out. Whoever replaces them will be better than dealing with Hamas.
7. #6
Clearsighted ,   USA   (08.03.14)
"Whoever replaces them will be better than dealing with Hamas." Really? How do you know? What's the difference between Hamas, ISIS, AQ, AQIM, AQAP, Hizbullah, Iranian al-Quds, al Nusra, and all the other factions who all claim to be following the Quran and the Hadiths? Have you ever read them?
8. #6 Rabbi, oy-vey! you're sitting here in US, theIDF command
Rafi ,   US   (08.03.14)
... is on site in Gaza... Pls tell me... whom should we rely on for sound military advice & assessment of the situation? better cop some humility (if you indeed are who you say you are...)
9. If that's the case...
manicdrummer ,   Haifa, Israel   (08.03.14)
...then cut the crap and finish off Hamas! Wars cost money and lives and the sooner we win the war, the more money and lives we'll save.
10. How typical of western politicians!
Johannes ,   Norway   (08.03.14)
11. Establish
S. Pipitone ,   Florida   (08.03.14)
Yes, please establish a secure embassy in Gaza to communicate with citizens.
12. Shame on Netanyahu
Greg ,   Israel   (08.03.14)
Not destroying the terrorists infrastructure is asking for it to happen again. And it will be stronger next time. Shame on him.
13. Oh, Come on now!?
Larry ,   LA (formerly)   (08.04.14)
14. "Hamas was left in power"
Jonathan ,   MN/US   (08.04.14)
Why? I may be pro-Palestinian but that group of psychopaths has got to go. What possible advantage would letting them stay in power give Israel?
15. good strategy
David   (08.04.14)
Under the current circumstances, this is probably the best possible strategy-- not because the IDF cannot defeat Hamas, but for the unstated reason that the diplomatic consequences of the removal of Hamas, under the present leadership of the United States, would be a concerted effort to link Gaza with the West Bank and force Israel to make extremely harmful concessions. As dangerous and reckless as Hamas is at the moment, the perils of installing "peacemakers" more amenable to the West would be more disastrous. Hamas should be removed-- but ideally the removal should wait for the moment when there is a US leadership that is not so innately unsympathetic to Israel's history and basic rights.
16. We could've taken down Hamas in 10 days
Richard Horman ,   Baltimore, USA   (08.04.14)
Famous military quote: Never wound an enemy. What idiot in Israel made this comment and likewise made this decision?
17. Could Have, Should Have, Would Have
World Citizen ,   the world   (08.04.14)
Yeah, yeah yeah....... talk is cheap. Israel didn't want to take Gaza. The Israeli military likes sitting back and using bombs to kill civilians. Taking Gaza would have required the loss of hundreds of Israelis. That is something Israeli parents won't allow.
18. This isn't bloody Somalia, this is a tiny sliver of land!
tom ,   tel aviv   (08.04.14)
What "militants" other than Hamas are there & what difference does it make?! New day & new name, so what? This is pure madness from any/every point: military or political. Now the Arab Islamofascists all around us know: Israel is there for taking.....no guts, no will: too "smart" for our own good. Lucky they allow us double citizenship (for the fortunate ones)! There might be some countries willing to take the surviving "Yahud" under their wing.We could return to Europe & wait for Sharia to rule us, why not? better than endure hamsins &Hamas here for no purpose.
19. For the same reason
(08.04.14)
Rabin let Arafat's people into Israel, and Sharonchik gave Hamas Gaza.
20. So it all amounts to yet another episodic rocket war?
Cameron ,   USA   (08.04.14)
All the players & dynamics remain firmly in place? Again you've fucked off from doing the necessary hard work required with Gaza.
21. unbelievable
steve   (08.04.14)
If Israel does not complete its mission I am afraid that the blood shed on both sides will have been for not. An unexpected victory for Hamas that Bibi will have a difficult time squirming out of. Bibi blinked first under withering international pressure.
