So was Iraq's government before the West's naive ideas about "moderate theocrats" imposing democracy. Syria remained a secular government even with Iranian support. Iraq and Libya had secular governments until the West tried to impose democracy and got "theocracy" instead. We went into Iraq to prevent Saddam from killing people, so we could enable the Sunni extremists to kill even more people? Will we repeat that stupidity in Syria? The West destroyed Libya and almost destroyed Egypt till al-Sisi took over. The moral is that only a strong secular leadership will keep the radicals suppressed, not the naive Western ideas of democracy where the U.S. keeps pestering al-Sisi for suppressing the MB while ignoring all the "moderate" rebels coming back to their home countries from Syria to engage in terrorism.
