Let me get this straight. Islam commits murder, rape, and mayhem. Islam openly demands Israel's destruction. Islam demands that all non-Muslims convert to Islam or die. Then we hear that the problem is "religious fundamentalism". Think again. The problem is Islam. Not radical Islam. Not Islamic fundamentalism, or any other kind of fundamentalism. THE PROBLEM IS THE EXISTENCE OF ISLAM. ISLAM IS THE ENEMY. Islam should be destroyed. I know, you can't kill an idea, but you can kill the people who hold that idea. While I fully agree with the writer on religious fudamentalism (of all kinds) I believe it is mistaken to view IS and similar bodies as a reversion to the 'Middle Ages'. On the contray, IS is a very modern movement, prepared to employ modern technologies and modern political tactics. In the same way, while Nazi Germany referred back to Teutonic mythoology and built on historic antisemitism, it was also highly modernist in its industrialised approach to genocide. IS employs sophisticated modes of organisation and message dissemination. The beheadings, while utterly vile, are but one small cog in an adaptable machine.
