Unlike Israel, Abbas is doing some planning for the day after he dies. He is getting advanced in years. So what is he doing? Arranging for lots of countries to recognize Palestine's statehood. The statehood Israel has always tried to deny Palestinians. Netanyahu took that entirely off the table after the talks failed. And they failed because Netanyahu wanted to rename the status quo as statehood for Palestinians. No control over land sea or air. No control over borders or Palestinian security. no control over Palestine's economy of economic prospects. That (Netanyahu's vision and offering) is not statehood, not even close. So knowing he won't survive to see it, Abbas is setting up conditions internationally to make statehood easier for whoever succeeds him. Abbas successor likely will not be somebody appointed by the Israeli Prime Minister and accepted by the Palestinian people as legitimate by virtue of the appointment..
