Iran is currently making their own version of the Chinese massively re-enginered clone of the Russian S-300 (HQ9/HQ15/HQ18/FD2000). This Chinese/Iranian version is equivalent to the more dangerous Russian S-400/500. While the S-300 systems are not as good as what Iran already has, Russia has lots of surplus S-300 systems because they are currently deploying S-400 systems and early S-500 systems. Therefore, Russia may sell the surplus S-300 systems for bargain prices (less than the cost to make) to generate quick cash. As a result, Iran could substantially increase their deployment of sophisticated (and deadly) anti-aircraft systems for very low cost by adding the Russian surplus S-300 systems to their existing mix of Iranian made S-400 clones and purchased Chinese S-400 clones. In any case, Iran is becoming a very deadly place to fly an attacking aircraft.
