2. the polite thing to do is thank them and carry on
jd   (01.30.15)
I hear Portugal is quite pleasant, definitely worth a short visit. :)
3. Why on earth ...
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.30.15)
... would any Jew want to claim Spanish or Portuguese citizenship is beyond me. Becoming a citizen will entitle the Spanish government and the Portuguese government to demand taxes. Just a form of fundraising for two countries whose economies are broken beyond any hope of repair. Almost as nefarious as the persecution and expulsion endured by Jews in the Iberian peninsula. My husband is Sephardic, and has a right of claim to Spanish citizenship, as do our children. Thanks, but no thanks.
4. Self-interest or a gift to PLO?
Ian ,   Newcastle upon Tyne   (01.30.15)
As if proof can be brought after 500 years. It looks to me that the Portugal government will always be able to find excuses to grant citizenship to wealthy applicants and refuse poor ones. But,anyway,I smell a rat.The term Sephardic has become a very loose term and is usually a misnomer. For its own convenience, the British Mandatory defined every Jewish person who isn't Ashkenazi, itself a misnomer,as Sephardic so it would have to deal with only two Rabbinates. That resulted in every Oriental,N African and even Indian Jew being labelled Sephardic.......most of the population of modern Israel. Spain and Portugal have handed a gift to the PLO and Arab League who can now claim that most of the Jews in Israel DO have another country to go to;Spain or Portugal. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
5. an open door into Europe, ralph

They will be lined up & down the street and around the corner on this one.
6. To: No. 5
Sarah B ,   U.S.A. / Israel   (01.30.15)
Honey, a lot of Jews spent the worst years of their lives in Europe. Going back fifteen centuries. Lining up and down the street and around the corner? Really? Is that why Jews are fleeing Europe in droves?

Cameron ,   USA   (01.30.15)
Over fifteen centuries of Hell you say? Hmmm One does wonder why they didn't collectively move "en masse" to neighboring Islamic lands if life was so grim and oppressive in Christendom? While they may now be packing bags up in Belgium & France, I hear of no real retreat from cities across the length of Europe. We both know you'll be showing up soon enough in that long line to add passports to your collection, battle-axe.
8. As you see .............
Luiz F Haddad ,   Niteroi, Brazil   (02.01.15)
Jewish brothers and sisters, a renewed Christian Catholic Church is erasing the awful crimes committed against your people in past times by ignorant and filthy clerical authorities. Of course, it is impossible to forget them. But hopes for a good future are not an illusion. God Almighty wants our union.
9. You're talking rubbish #7
Nurit ,   Israel   (02.01.15)
I didn't see any lines forming outside the Spanish Embassy when they offered citizenship, so why would it be any different with Portugal? Most Israelis are VERY happy in our own country, thank you. I have an EU passport, but prefer living here.
10. We'll just have to wait and see,,
Dilord Griste ,   Washington D.C.   (02.03.15)
The 2 most powerful words of 2015 will be "Fake Jews".
11. in russian new dual citizenship legislation...
Adler J   (02.03.15)
if Russians are discovered hidding a dual citizenship which they didnt report to the russian government they will have to pay a fine, so is more a legislation to collect taxes from russian citizens who left the country in the last decades...
12. Globalization and multiculturism...
Adler J   (02.03.15)
there you have Russia, the new legislation allows Russians to have dual citizenship, but Russians with dual citizenship are considered by the government "exclusively" Russians....nu? The government believes that dual citizenship diminishes the importance of Russian citizenship, not to mention that if theres no agreement between Russia and the other country, Russia do not recognize the dual citizenship, by the Israel Nationality Law some Arab countries as Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Yemen are considered enemy states, even though any jew from those countries can adopt Israel citizenship. nu? There you have Ex President Katsav was born in Iran...
13. the frying pan or the fire
Cameron ,   USA   (02.03.15)
An exceedingly dour choice to make: To risk self & family in an ever more uncertain Europe, or to live in the #1 bullseye & lightning rod of the ME. Grateful not to have to make that heavy call myself.
