Yes, they are jews that were rescued from Ethyopia 15-20 years ago, brought into Israel with a secretive Mosad operation, many of them serve in the IDF in combat or otherwise, also they were brought in order to save them from being killed by the ongoing civil war among the villages there. They live and thrive in Israel.

What difference does it make if they are Jews or not? The important think is that he is showing respect to Israel by serving in the IDF. A lot of Haredim's are supposed to be Jews, yet, many of them would never serve!!
