These two misguided youths -- heaven knows what they were promised to become "fighters" (it's never quite like the real deal) -- are hardly representative of the Druze community in Israel. I am heartened to read that important and respected officials in the town spoke out against these youths. But I am hardly surprised. The Druze are, for the overwhelming part, extremely loyal to the State of Israel. They serve proudly and with distinction in Israel's military, many of them in combat and commando units. Go into an Arab town in Israel (if you dare), and the hostility is palpable. Go into a Druze town and the warmth and welcome are equally palpable. They have made the choice to be Israeli. Those that haven't will be rejected by their own. The Druze are an essential part of the State of Israel. The Arabs -- not so much. I don't think it is too much to require Israeli citizens to be loyal to their State. You see that loyalty among the Druze and, with few exceptions, among Arab Christians. It's the others -- mostly exceptions -- that present a problem.

Years ago, when Israel negotiated peace with Syria, and it was clear that in exchange Israel would have to return virtually the area, including the Druze villages, the pro Syrian sentiments there were running high, in expression of loyalty to the looming sovereign and of fear for his retribution against "traitors". The 2 latest victims and the "martyr" ceremonies organized for them indicate that many residents there are still afraid of losing their Israeli aegis.
